Custom Mooncake Boxes
Custom mooncake boxes present dense, beautifully moulded cakes in fitted trays so the patterns on top arrive as crisp as when they left the oven. We make them as rigid gift boxes, drawer boxes and simple folding cartons, printed and finished to match the care that goes into every cake.

A Gift Box as Much as a Cake Box
Mooncakes are rarely bought just for the person buying them. They are carried to family, handed to clients and exchanged between friends, often several boxes at a time, and the box is part of the gift. That is why mooncake packaging leans towards rigid boards, rich colours, foil, embossing and handles, rather than the plain white carton you might use for a sponge cake.
For Asian bakeries, patisseries and specialist gift companies, the box also says something about quality before anyone tastes the filling. A heavy lid that lifts away to reveal four perfectly placed cakes, each in its own cavity, tells the recipient that the baker cares about detail.
Because mooncakes are given in quantity, the box is also seen in quantity. A bakery whose boxes are stacked on desks, carried through offices and photographed at family gatherings gets far more exposure from its packaging than from almost any advert. A distinctive colour and a clearly placed logo on the lid turn every gift into a quiet recommendation for the next order. p2 Bakeries that gift baklava in the same season use the same rigid build on our baklava boxes with fitted trays.
Trays and Cavities That Protect the Pattern
The embossed pattern on top of a mooncake is easily scuffed if cakes slide into each other or the lid presses down. Each cake should sit in its own round or square cavity, with enough depth that the lid never touches the surface. We make trays from card for lighter boxes, or from rigid board wrapped in paper for premium sets. Some bakers prefer a moulded plastic tray inside the box, which we can design the outer box around if you supply it.
Individually wrapped cakes are usually sealed in a small bag with an oxygen absorber. Measure them in their wrapping, because the bag adds a few millimetres all round, and send us the diameter and height of the wrapped cake so we can size the cavity correctly. p1 Lighter card trays use the same cutting as our bakery boxes with dividers.

Custom Mooncake Boxes: Rigid Lids, Drawers and Handles
A two-piece rigid box with a lift-off lid is the classic mooncake gift. It feels weighty and keeps its shape when stacked. A drawer box, where the tray slides out of a sleeve, is a good alternative when you want a dramatic reveal. Magnetic flap boxes, which open like a book, give a clean front surface for a large illustration and close with a satisfying snap.
For carrying several boxes, a handled outer box or a matching paper carrier bag keeps everything together. Some bakeries also offer a simpler folding carton with a window for their everyday range, saving the rigid boxes for the premium fillings.
Think about how the boxes will be stored before they are filled. Rigid boxes arrive made up and take more room in a busy bakery, while foldable rigid boxes and folding cartons arrive flat and are assembled as needed. If storage is tight, a foldable rigid box with a magnetic flap gives most of the premium feel with a fraction of the shelf space.
Colours, Patterns and Finishes
Mooncake packaging has a strong visual tradition. Deep red, gold, imperial yellow, jade green and midnight blue are all popular, often paired with moon motifs, rabbits, clouds, lanterns and flowing lines. Many modern bakeries reinterpret those ideas with cleaner layouts, pastel palettes or bold illustration, which helps a new brand look different from more traditional boxes.
Foil stamping in gold or silver is almost expected, and we can combine it with embossing so a moon or logo stands proud of the surface. Textured papers with a linen or silk-like grain give the lid a tactile feel. Inside, a contrasting colour on the tray or a printed message under the lid adds a pleasing surprise when the box is opened. p1 The guide comparing foil and emboss finishes shows gold on deep red and jade papers.
Labelling and Product Information
Mooncakes often carry several fillings in one box: lotus seed, red bean, salted egg yolk, custard or newer flavours. A printed card insert or a small legend inside the lid tells the recipient which cake is which, matching the pattern on each cake to its filling. That avoids the guesswork that leads to a half-eaten cake being put back.
Ingredient lists, allergen information and best-before dates usually go on a label applied to the base or back, so the main artwork stays clean. We can leave a clear panel in the design for your label, or print a fixed ingredients block if your fillings stay the same.
If you sell to restaurants, hotels or corporate clients who give boxes under their own name, we can print a co-branded lid or leave space for a client sticker. That flexibility lets one box design serve both your shop counter and your business orders.
Materials and Food Contact
Rigid gift boxes are made from greyboard wrapped in printed or coloured paper. Folding cartons are made from white or kraft boxboard. Wrapped mooncakes rarely touch the box directly, but food-contact grade board is available on request for trays where unwrapped cakes might sit.
Handles can be ribbon, cord or a die-cut card handle built into the lid. Ribbon closures add colour and suit traditional designs, while a slim magnetic catch gives a cleaner, modern look.
Measure the Cake in Its Sealed Bag
A mooncake is never packed bare; it goes in a sealed bag with an oxygen absorber, and that bag adds 3 to 5 mm to the diameter and a little to the height. Cavities cut to the naked cake are therefore always too tight. Measure a bagged cake across and tall, tell us how many go in a box and whether any are minis, and say if you already use a plastic tray we should build the outer box around.
Order the boxes a few weeks before you bake, because the season arrives all at once. Send the lid artwork with the foil area marked, and the custom quote arrives by email within one working day; the minimum is set per job, so a small bakery can run a short premium edition and a plain carton for everyday sales.
The free proof shows the lid, the tray layout and the foil before anything is made. Production takes 4 to 7 working days after approval, and the boxes reach UK mainland addresses by free tracked delivery. Bakeries that gift a tin of tea with the cakes usually add our small printed boxes for tea in the same colours.

Mooncake Boxes Questions
What buyers ask before ordering mooncake boxes.
How do I measure my mooncakes for the tray?
Measure the diameter and height of a cake in its individual wrapping. The bag adds a few millimetres, and we size each cavity to that wrapped size.
Can the box hold different sized cakes?
Yes. We can design a tray with mixed cavities, for example two large cakes and four minis, or leave a space for a small tea tin.
Will the lid touch the pattern on the cakes?
We set the cavity depth so there is clearance above the cakes. The lid rests on the tray or box walls, never on the cakes.
Can you add a handle to the box?
We can add ribbon, cord or a die-cut card handle. A handled outer box can also carry two smaller gift boxes together.
Which finishes suit a traditional mooncake box?
Gold foil with embossing on a deep red or jade paper is a classic combination. A textured wrap paper adds richness without extra print.
Can the box include a flavour guide?
We can print a legend inside the lid or on a separate card, matching each cake's pattern or position to its filling. Most bakers number the cavities and list the fillings under the lid.
Can you work with my own plastic trays?
Yes. Send us a sample or exact dimensions of your tray and we will build the outer box around it.
Do you supply matching carrier bags?
We can print paper carrier bags in the same colours and finishes, which is useful when customers buy several boxes. A bag that holds two four-cake boxes is the usual size.
Can I order a premium and an everyday design?
Many bakeries do. A rigid box for premium fillings and a window carton for everyday cakes can be quoted together.
Where should ingredient labels go?
Most bakers apply them to the base or back. We can leave a clear panel in the artwork so the label sits neatly.
How far ahead should I order boxes?
Allow time for artwork and the free proof, then 4 to 7 working days for production and 2 to 3 working days for delivery. Starting a few weeks before you bake avoids a last-minute rush.
