Custom Cupcake Boxes
Custom cupcake boxes hold each cake upright in its own cradle so the frosting reaches the customer exactly as it left your piping bag. We make them for single cupcakes up to boxes of twelve, printed with your bakery's branding and fitted with inserts sized to your cases.

Why Cupcakes Need a Box of Their Own
A cupcake is mostly air and buttercream on top of a small sponge, which makes it one of the most fragile things a bakery sells. Put six of them loose in a cake box and the first sharp turn in the car leaves swirls smeared across the lid and the neighbouring cakes. The answer is an insert: a sheet of card with round holes that holds every case in place so the tops never touch anything.
Custom cupcake boxes combine that insert with a box tall enough for your frosting and a print design that makes the bakery recognisable on the walk home. They suit a counter sale of a single treat just as well as a dozen for an office birthday, and they turn a paper bag purchase into something that feels like a gift.
There is a practical side too. A box that stacks squarely is easier to fit on a crowded counter, in a delivery driver's footwell or in a fridge before a party, and a printed lid saves you labelling or stamping plain boxes by hand at the end of a long baking day. The bag the box goes home in is sized on our cupcake bags sized to the box page.
Choosing Between 1, 2, 4, 6 and 12 Cupcake Boxes
Most bakeries settle on two or three formats rather than the full set. A single box works for impulse buys, wedding favours and loyalty freebies. Twos and fours suit couples and small treat boxes, while six is the classic gift size and the one most people order for collection. Twelve is for parties and office orders, and its larger footprint usually needs a slightly stronger board.
Look at your sales before you order. If you mostly sell sixes, order more of that size and keep a smaller run of singles for the counter. If you sell a lot of mini cupcakes, a separate insert with smaller holes in the same outer box can save you stocking another box size.
- Single: favours, counter sales, samples
- Two or four: treats for two, small gift sets
- Six: the standard gift and collection box
- Twelve: parties, offices and celebration orders

Sizing Inserts to Your Cupcake Cases
The insert is where a cupcake box succeeds or fails. Measure the base diameter of your paper or foil cases after baking, since the sponge can push the case out slightly. The hole should be just a little larger, usually 2 to 3 mm, so the case drops in and sits snug without being squeezed. Muffin-style tulip wraps need bigger holes and more spacing between them.
Height is the other measurement. Bake a test batch, pipe your tallest design, and measure from the bottom of the case to the highest point of the frosting or topper. Add 10 mm so the lid clears it comfortably. Standard cupcakes with a classic swirl generally need an internal height of around 90 to 100 mm, while flat-iced or mini cakes can go much lower.
Spacing matters as much as hole size. Leave enough room between holes so that wide swirls do not kiss each other, which on a six usually means around 75 to 80 mm from centre to centre for a standard cupcake. If you top cakes with tall fondant figures or wafer decorations, tell us so we can allow extra height. Our method for measuring cases for an insert covers top and base diameters.
Windows, Board and Print Options
A clear window in the lid lets customers see the decoration without opening the box, which is especially useful on the counter or at a market stall. The window film sits inside the lid, so the edges are clean, and the opening can follow your logo shape or a simple rectangle.
Most cupcake boxes are made from white folding boxboard, which prints sharply and gives a clean, bakery-fresh look. Kraft board suits rustic or plant-based bakeries and pairs well with one or two dark ink colours. Food-contact grade board is available on request for the insert and inner surfaces, and a light coating can help resist buttercream grease marks.
For print, full colour lets you reproduce illustrations, patterns or a photo of your signature bake. A simple logo on the lid with a coloured band round the sides often looks just as polished and is easier for customers to recognise from a distance.
Box Styles That Suit a Bakery Counter
The two most common styles are a one-piece box with a tuck-in lid, which folds up quickly and ships flat, and a two-piece base and lid, which feels more like a gift. Handle boxes with a fold-over carry handle are popular for sixes and twelves bought on foot, because customers can hold them level without tipping the cakes.
If you run a busy counter, ask for a style that assembles without glue. Staff can fold a stack of boxes during a quiet hour and have them ready before the lunchtime rush. For weddings and events, a small single-cupcake box with a ribbon slot gives a neat favour that guests can carry home. Pastries and traybakes displayed beside the cupcakes go in our window bakery boxes for the counter.
Who Orders Cupcake Boxes From Us
Independent cupcake shops and high-street bakeries are the main buyers, followed by home bakers who sell through social media and local markets. Wedding cake makers use single boxes for favours, and event caterers order sixes for corporate gifts and launch days. Coffee shops that buy in cupcakes from a supplier often order a branded box so the cakes leave in their own packaging.
We also see orders from party planners who want boxes matched to a theme colour and from cookery schools that send students home with their bakes. Market traders who want a plainer box choose our kraft cupcake boxes for markets.
Pipe One Cupcake and Measure the Swirl
The height of your frosting decides the cupcake box, not the case. Pipe a cupcake the way you sell it, with any topper, and measure from the base of the case to the top of the swirl; add 10 mm and that is the inside height. Then measure the case diameter at the top and the base, because the insert hole is cut between those two figures so the case is gripped without being crushed. Tell us the counts you sell, one, two, four, six or twelve, and whether the box needs a window or a handle. Artwork is usually a logo and a colour for the lid, sent as a vector file, and we show it on a free proof with the insert layout. A custom quote comes by email within one working day with boxes from £0.25 and low minimums per job, so a small bakery is not pushed into a huge run. Production takes 4 to 7 working days after approval with free tracked UK mainland delivery. The most popular count has its own page: boxes of six with inserts.

Cupcake Boxes Questions
What buyers ask before ordering cupcake boxes.
How do I measure for cupcake box inserts?
Measure the base diameter of your baked cupcakes in their cases and add 2 to 3 mm for the hole size. We also need the distance from the base to the top of your tallest frosting so the lid clears it.
Can I use the same box for regular and mini cupcakes?
Often yes. We can make two inserts with different hole sizes that fit the same outer box, which saves you stocking two box sizes.
Will tall buttercream swirls fit?
Yes, if we size the box for them. Most piped swirls need an internal height of around 90 to 100 mm, and we add clearance above your tallest design.
Can the cupcake box have a window?
Yes. A clear film window in the lid shows off the decoration, and the opening can be a rectangle, a circle or a shape based on your logo.
Which is better for cupcakes, white or kraft board?
White board gives bright, crisp print and a classic patisserie look. Kraft suits rustic branding and dark ink, and both can be ordered with food-contact grade board on request.
Do the boxes resist buttercream grease?
We can add a grease-resistant coating to the inside surfaces and the insert, which keeps marks off the box when cupcakes are rich in butter. Plain board copes with a short journey home. Tell us if the boxes sit in a display cabinet for hours and we specify the coating.
Can I get cupcake boxes with a carry handle?
Yes, handle-top boxes are popular for sixes and twelves because customers can carry them level. They fold flat for storage like the other styles.
Do you make single cupcake boxes for wedding favours?
Yes. Single boxes can be printed with names and a date for a specific event, and we can add a ribbon slot for a finishing touch.
How long do cupcake boxes take for a bakery opening?
Allow a day for the quote and a couple of days for the proof, then 4 to 7 working days for production after you approve it. Free tracked UK mainland delivery adds 2 to 3 working days. Around two and a half weeks from first email to boxes on the counter is a safe plan.
Are the boxes delivered assembled?
No, they arrive flat to save space and postage. Most styles fold up in seconds without glue, so staff can build a stack before a busy period.
What is the starting price for cupcake boxes?
Prices start from £0.25 per box and depend on size, print and quantity. Send us your requirements for a custom quote.
