Custom Cupcake Bags

from £0.25 a bagPriced per job · low minimums

Custom cupcake bags are printed paper carry bags with a wide, flat base, made so a box of cupcakes sits level inside rather than tilting and smearing the frosting. Bakeries use them for takeaway and collection orders, turning the walk home into a small advert for the shop.

Why an Ordinary Carrier Bag Fails Cupcakes

Most carrier bags are tall and narrow, designed for clothes or groceries. Drop a box of six cupcakes into one and the box either will not fit or ends up tipped on its side at the bottom of the bag, with the swirls pressed against the lid. A customer who opens a box of smeared buttercream at home blames the bakery, not the bag.

A cupcake bag is shaped the other way round: wide and deep at the base, with a gusset that matches the footprint of your cupcake box. The box slides in flat and stays flat, held level by the base of the bag while the customer carries it by the handles. The cakes arrive as they left the counter.

The bag also finishes the sale. A box handed over loose looks unfinished; a printed bag with your name on it looks like a proper purchase and is far easier to carry alongside shopping, a pushchair or a phone.

Weather is another reason. A cardboard cupcake box carried through rain soon softens at the corners, and a paper bag adds a useful outer layer between the shower and the box. It will not make the box waterproof, but on a short walk to the car or the office it makes a real difference to how the box looks on arrival.

Matching Cupcake Bags to Your Boxes

The single most important measurement is the footprint of your cupcake box, its length and width. The bag's base should be a few millimetres larger in each direction so the box slides in without catching but cannot slide around. The height of the bag should cover most of the box, leaving the handles free above it.

If you sell several box sizes, such as fours, sixes and twelves, you have two choices. Order a bag for each size, which gives the neatest fit, or order one bag that suits your most popular box and a larger one that covers the rest. Many bakeries find two bag sizes are enough. Measuring your boxes, flat on a table, takes a minute and saves a costly mismatch. p1 The guide to measuring products for packaging covers footprint and clearance.

  • Measure the length and width of each cupcake box
  • Add a few millimetres to each for the bag base
  • Cover most of the box height, leaving handles free
  • Two bag sizes usually cover a whole range

Handles, Paper and Strength

Twisted paper handles are the everyday choice: comfortable, strong and economical. Flat paper handles are slightly cheaper and fold neatly. Rope or ribbon handles give a boutique feel that suits celebration cake shops and gift orders. Whichever you choose, the handles should be reinforced inside the top of the bag so a box of twelve does not tear them away.

Kraft paper gives a natural, artisan look and hides small marks well. White paper shows bright print colours most accurately and looks crisp and patisserie-like. Heavier paper feels more substantial and holds its shape better on the counter. A box of twelve cupcakes with tall frosting has some weight, so do not choose the lightest paper for the largest bag.

Look at the bottom of the bag as well as the handles. A card base insert, laid in the bottom of the bag, spreads the weight of the box and stops the base sagging, which keeps the cupcake box level. It is a small addition that makes the largest bag sizes feel much sturdier in the hand. p2 The rope-handle version is closer to our luxury paper bags with rope handles.

Print That Gets Seen on the Street

A cupcake bag travels: down the high street, onto the bus, into the office. That makes it valuable advertising space. Your logo should be large and clear on both wide sides, with your website or social handle where people can read it. Many bakeries add a short line such as a slogan, an ordering link or a QR code for their menu.

Brand colours look striking on white paper, while one or two dark colours on kraft give a warm, handmade feel. A full-coverage colour bag in a signature pink, mint or cream becomes instantly recognisable. Keep designs bold and simple; bags are seen briefly and from a distance, and a cluttered design is lost.

Printing the gussets with a pattern or a short message is an inexpensive extra that makes the bag look considered from every angle. p2 The same print rules apply to our printed paper bags with handles for general bakery sales.

Pairing Bags With Your Cupcake Boxes

The best results come when bag and box are planned together. A matching colour, the same logo placement and a shared pattern make the whole purchase look like one piece of branding. If you are ordering new cupcake boxes, ordering the bags at the same time means we can size the bag base exactly to the box and match the print.

For gift orders, a ribbon tied through the handles or a branded sticker sealing the top adds a finishing touch. A small card tucked in the bag with care instructions, such as keeping cupcakes cool and eating within a day or two, helps the cakes arrive and stay at their best. p1 Bakeries that also sell whole cakes carry them in wide-based bags for cake boxes, which use the same construction at a larger size.

Bakeries That Use Cupcake Bags

Cupcake shops and bakeries with a busy takeaway trade are the main buyers. Cake makers who sell boxed cupcakes for collection order them to finish each order neatly. Coffee shops that sell cupcakes by the box use them for customers buying treats to take back to the office.

Market traders and pop-up stalls use bags so customers can carry boxes around a market without balancing them, and home bakers selling through social media use them to hand over orders professionally. Event caterers use larger bags for delivering multiple boxes to a venue.

Wedding cake makers who deliver cupcake towers sometimes order a set of bags for guests to take leftover cupcakes home at the end of the evening, printed with the couple's names. p2 Caterers delivering several boxes to a venue use our bakery boxes with built-in handles instead of a bag.

Lay Your Box Flat and Measure Its Footprint

A cupcake bag is cut from the box it carries, so the measurement that matters is the box footprint, not the bag you use now. Lay each box size flat on the counter, measure length and width, and tell us which size sells most. The bag base is cut a few millimetres larger in each direction so the box slides in but cannot tip, and the height covers most of the box with the handles clear above it.

Two sizes cover most bakeries: one for the bestselling box and a larger one for the rest. Choose twisted paper handles unless you sell celebration orders, where rope handles earn their cost, and ask for a card base insert in the largest size. The custom quote arrives by email within one working day, with the minimum set per job, from £0.25 a bag.

The free proof shows the front, back and gussets. Production takes 4 to 7 working days after approval, and the flat bags reach UK mainland addresses by free tracked delivery. Bakeries ordering boxes and bags together get both sized to each other; our six-hole cupcake boxes with inserts are the box most of these bags are cut around.

Cupcake Bags Questions

What buyers ask before ordering cupcake bags.

How do I size a bag for my cupcake boxes?

Measure the length and width of your box and add a few millimetres to each for the bag base. The bag should cover most of the box height, leaving the handles free.

Why not use a standard carrier bag?

Standard bags are narrow, so cupcake boxes tip or will not fit. A wide-base bag keeps the box level and the frosting intact.

Which handles are strongest?

Twisted paper handles with reinforced tops are strong enough for a box of twelve. Rope handles add a boutique feel.

Kraft or white paper?

Kraft gives a natural, artisan look and hides marks. White shows bright brand colours more accurately.

Can the bag match my cupcake boxes?

Yes, and ordering both together is best, as we can size the bag to the box and match colours and logo placement. Send the box dimensions even if the boxes come from elsewhere.

How many bag sizes do I need?

Most bakeries manage with two: one for their most popular box and a larger one for the rest. A third size only pays if you sell a lot of minis.

Can the gussets be printed?

Yes, a pattern or short message on the gussets makes the bag look finished from every side. Gusset print adds little to the cost on a run of a few hundred.

Can a bag hold two boxes of six?

Yes, a taller bag can hold two stacked boxes, which suits office orders and parties. Ask for reinforced handles on that size.

Can I add a QR code to the bag?

Yes, a QR code linking to your menu or ordering page is a useful addition, as bags are seen by many people on the way home. Keep the code at least 25 mm square so it scans from a phone.

How long from approving the bag proof to bags under the counter?

Four to seven working days to print and make the bags, then 2 to 3 working days for free tracked delivery to a UK mainland address. Add a day or two for the quote and proof at the start, so about two weeks from first email to delivery is typical.

Is there a minimum quantity for cupcake bags?

Minimums are low and quoted per job, depending on size, paper and print. A single bag size in one print is the cheapest way to start.
