Half a Dozen Is the Size People Buy

Single cupcakes are an impulse buy, and a dozen is a party order, but six is the box that sells all week. It is the size people pick up for a family treat, a thank-you for a colleague or a visit to a friend. For a bakery or home baker, getting this box right covers a large share of everyday sales.

The trouble with six cupcakes in a plain box is movement. Even a short car journey sends them sliding into the corners, knocking off sprinkles and pressing buttercream against the walls. A six-hole insert solves that by holding each case in a round pocket, with enough space around the frosting that nothing touches.

A well-made box also signals quality. Customers notice when cupcakes arrive in perfect condition, and they remember where they came from when the box carries your name on the lid. Fours, twelves and single boxes are on our cupcake boxes in other counts page.

How the Insert Holds Each Cupcake

The insert is a flat card panel with six round holes punched in a 3 by 2 layout, sitting on raised legs or folded sides so it hovers a little above the box base. Each cupcake drops into a hole, and the paper case is gripped around its middle so the cake cannot slide or tip.

The hole size is critical. Too small and the case gets crushed as you push it in; too large and the cupcake rocks. Measure the case at the point where it will meet the insert, usually around the top of the case rather than the base. Standard cupcake cases, muffin cases and tulip wraps all differ, so let us know which you use.

Hole spacing matters too. Generous buttercream swirls can be wider than the case, so we leave a gap between holes so neighbouring toppings do not kiss. Reversible inserts, with large holes on one side and smaller mini-cupcake holes on the other, give flexibility if you sell both sizes. Our method for measuring a case for the insert covers rim and base diameters.

Height Clearance for Toppings

Frosting height is the measurement bakers most often forget. A tall swirl with a macaron or a chocolate shard on top can stand 90 mm or more from the base of the case. The box needs enough inner height to clear the tallest decoration with room to spare, or the lid will drag across the top when it closes.

For classic piped cupcakes, an inside height of around 100 mm works well. For towering designs or cupcakes with toppers on sticks, 110 to 120 mm is safer. If you sell flatter cupcakes with fondant discs or simple glaze, a shallower box looks neater and costs a little less.

Temperature plays a part as well. Buttercream softens quickly in a warm car, and a cupcake that cleared the lid perfectly in a cool kitchen can slump and spread by the time it reaches a party. A little extra height and a vent hole or two on the sides help warm air escape. On hot days, tell customers to carry the box flat on the floor of the car rather than on a seat, where it tilts at every corner. Tall swirls that deserve to be seen go in our window boxes that show the swirls.

Box Styles for Shops and Deliveries

The most popular six-hole box is a one-piece folding box with a hinged lid that tucks in at the front. It folds flat for storage and assembles in seconds behind the counter. Window lids let customers see the decoration before they open the box, which helps sell flavours from a display.

A gable box with a carry handle works well for walk-in customers, who can carry it level without squashing the lid. For delivery orders, a deeper box with locking corners resists crushing better in a courier van, and a sticker seal across the lid keeps it shut.

Some bakeries use a two-piece box with a separate clear dome lid. It gives a striking display for celebration cupcakes, though it costs more and takes more storage space. Customers walking home with six often prefer our handled boxes for carrying six.

  • Hinged tuck lid: everyday choice, folds flat
  • Window lid: shows off decoration in store
  • Gable with handle: easy to carry level
  • Locking corner box: stronger for delivery
  • Base with clear dome: premium display

Board and Grease Resistance

Buttercream contains plenty of butter, and some of it will touch the insert and box walls. A coated white board or a kraft board with a grease-resistant lining stops oily marks spreading through the card, which keeps the outside of the box clean. Food-contact grade board is available on request for inserts and box interiors that may touch cake.

White board shows bright print clearly and gives a crisp, clean feel suited to pastel bakery brands. Kraft board looks rustic and homemade and pairs nicely with one-colour printing in black or a deep brand shade.

If your cupcakes are chilled before sale, condensation can form on the box when it leaves the fridge. A coated board handles this far better than uncoated kraft, which may soften slightly where droplets gather. The grades are explained in our board grades for buttery bakes guide.

Branding That Works on a Cupcake Box

The lid is your main canvas. A logo, the bakery name and a short tagline are usually enough, especially if you use a window that already shows off the cupcakes. Social handles and a website on the side panels encourage repeat orders, and a small allergen statement or a space for a flavour sticker helps staff and customers.

If you sell cupcakes for events, a blank area on the lid for a handwritten name or a sticker turns a stock box into a personalised gift. Keep text and logos away from the window edge so they do not look cramped. One colour on kraft and full colour on white are shown in our print finishes compared guide.

Measure the Case at the Rim, Not the Base

Six-hole inserts grip the cupcake case near its rim, so the measurement that matters is the diameter at the top of the case, not the base. Measure a case you actually bake in, because tulip, muffin and standard cases differ by several millimetres, and tell us which you use. Then pipe your tallest cupcake with its topper and measure from the base of the case to the top; add 10 mm and that is the box height. Choose the style, a tuck lid for shop counters, a window lid for display, a lock-bottom box for deliveries, and kraft or white board. Say if buttercream is rich enough to need a grease-resistant coating. Artwork is a logo and a colour for the lid, sent as vector files, and the free proof shows the box and the insert together. A custom quote comes by email within one working day, printed six-hole boxes start from £0.25 on simpler styles and minimums are low and quoted per job. Production takes 4 to 7 working days after approval with free tracked UK mainland delivery. Market stalls that want a plain look use our kraft cupcake boxes for markets.

Six-Hole Cupcake Boxes Questions

What buyers ask before ordering Six-Hole cupcake boxes.

How do I measure for the insert holes?

Measure the case where it will sit in the insert, usually near the top of the case, because that is where the insert grips. Tell us if you use standard cupcake, muffin or tulip cases. We cut the holes from that measurement.

How tall should the box be?

Measure your tallest cupcake with decorations and add a little clearance. Around 100 mm inside height suits most piped cupcakes.

Can the insert hold mini cupcakes too?

Yes, a reversible insert can have standard holes on one side and mini holes on the other, so one box covers both sizes. Tell us both case diameters. The box height stays the same.

Will buttercream stain the box?

A coated or grease-resistant board stops butter marks spreading through the card and keeps the outside clean. Cupcakes carried home within an hour rarely mark plain board. Tell us how long the boxes sit filled in a cabinet.

Can the cupcakes touch the card?

Yes, the cases rest on the insert, so food-contact grade board is available on request for inserts and interiors where cake may touch the board. Tell us when you ask for the quote and it is specified. The printed outer box does not touch the cakes.

Is a window lid worth it?

It helps sell cupcakes from a display because customers see the decoration. It also means you need less printed detail on the lid.

Which style is best for delivery orders?

A deeper box with locking corners resists crushing in a van. Add a sticker seal to keep the lid closed.

Can I personalise boxes for events?

Leave a blank panel or a sticker area on the lid for a name or message. It turns a stock box into a gift.

Kraft or white board for a bakery?

White shows bright colours and suits pastel brands. Kraft gives a rustic look and suits one-colour printing.

What does a printed six-hole cupcake box cost?

Simpler printed six-hole boxes start from £0.25 each. Windows, handles and dome lids are quoted per job on top of that. Send your case size and quantity and we email a custom quote within one working day.

What if six-hole boxes arrive crushed?

Photograph the crushed boxes and the parcel and tell us within 10 days of delivery, and we reprint or refund the damaged boxes. Flat-packed boxes rarely crush, so damage usually points to the courier. Check the outer bundles on arrival.
