The Trouble With Mixed Boxes

Assortment boxes are some of the best sellers in any bakery. Customers love choosing a dozen different treats, and gift buyers like the variety. But a mixed box is also the one most likely to arrive in a mess. A cupcake tips into a doughnut, frosting smears across a brownie, a heavy cookie slides into a delicate tart. By the time the box is opened, the beautiful arrangement has become a jumble.

Dividers stop that. Each treat sits in its own compartment, held upright and apart from its neighbours. Flavours and toppings stay separate, frosting stays where it was piped, and the box looks as good at a birthday party as it did on the counter.

Delivery apps make the problem worse. A driver carrying several orders on a bike or in a car cannot keep every box perfectly level, and a mixed box that arrives with treats piled in one corner usually leads to a refund request. Dividers are one of the simplest ways to protect your ratings when you sell through apps, because they keep the box looking right however it is carried. p2 Bakeries that sell single large cakes alongside assortments usually run these next to printed boxes for whole cakes.

Types of Divider

Different bakes need different kinds of support. We make several divider styles and can combine them in one box. p0 The insert styles for sweet boxes page shows raised holes, slotted grids and egg-crate dividers side by side.

  • Cupcake inserts: a raised card with round holes that hold each cupcake by its case
  • Slot-together grid dividers: card walls that form square cells for doughnuts, brownies and tarts
  • Single strip dividers: one or two card strips that split a box into rows for cookies or slices
  • Stepped inserts for macarons, which keep each one standing on its edge
  • Mixed inserts: different cell sizes in one box, so a large cake slice sits beside four small treats

Sizing Bakery Boxes with Dividers

Begin with your largest treat in each category. For cupcakes, measure the base diameter of the case and the overall height to the top of the frosting. For doughnuts, measure the diameter and height. For brownies and tray bakes, measure the cut square. Then decide how many you want in each box and how they should be arranged: a row of four, a square of four, a box of six in two rows, or a dozen in three rows.

We size each cell with a little clearance so treats drop in easily but cannot slide. Box height is set by the tallest item plus a gap so the lid never touches the frosting. If you sell standard and mini cupcakes, two inserts can fit the same outer box, which keeps stock simple.

Cases make a difference too. Paper cupcake cases flare out at the top, so a cupcake in a tulip case needs a wider hole in the insert than one in a straight-sided case. If you use more than one type of case, send us a sample of each or measure them at the base and at the rim. p2 A six-hole cupcake box is the most common layout if you want a starting point.

Board, Grease Resistance and Windows

White folding board gives the brightest print and a clean look that shows off colourful bakes. Kraft board suits a natural style and hides small marks. Both are available with a grease-resistant coating on the inside, which we recommend for doughnuts, brownies and anything buttery. The dividers themselves can be made from the same board or from a thinner card to keep weight and cost down.

A window in the lid lets customers see their assortment without opening the box, which also helps staff check orders before they leave. Food-contact grade board is available on request for boxes where bakes sit directly on the board without cases or liners.

Divider height is worth thinking about. Full-height walls give the most protection but can make it fiddly to lift treats out. Walls around half the height of the treat hold everything in place while leaving room for fingers, which is what most bakeries choose. p2 The bakery boxes with a lid window page covers window shapes and film options in more depth.

Printing for Gift and Counter Sales

Assortment boxes are often bought as gifts, so they deserve a little more design than an everyday bakery box. A full colour lid with your logo and a pattern, a printed inside lid with a short thank-you or a list of flavours, and printed dividers in a contrasting colour all lift the presentation. On kraft, one or two colours look smart and keep costs down.

Some bakeries print a small flavour key inside the lid, with a numbered or illustrated map of the cells, so customers know which treat is which. It is a lovely touch for macaron and truffle boxes where flavours are hard to tell apart by eye.

For bakeries that sell boxes of different sizes, keep the lid design consistent and let the insert do the work. A box of four and a box of twelve with the same artwork look like a family on the counter, and customers trading up from one to the other recognise the brand straight away. p2 Gift buyers often choose a brownie box with printed divider in the same family for corporate orders.

Bakers Who Use Divided Boxes

Cupcake bakeries, doughnut shops, macaron makers, brownie and blondie brands, home bakers selling mixed boxes online, dessert bars and coffee shops with a treat counter all use divided boxes. Event caterers and wedding cake makers use them for favour boxes and dessert tables. Corporate gifting companies order them for client treat boxes, often with a branded sleeve over a standard bakery box.

Home bakers who sell mixed boxes for collection or local delivery find that dividers also speed up packing. Rather than arranging treats carefully on a bare base, they drop each one into its cell, close the lid and move on to the next order. Over a busy weekend that saved time adds up. p1 Home bakers who sell online often start with the smaller kraft cupcake boxes with inserts because they look good with minimal print.

Start With the Cupcake Case, Not the Cupcake

The one measurement bakers most often forget is the case. A tulip case flares to 80 mm or more at the rim while the base is 50 mm, and an insert cut for the base will crush the paper. So before anything else, post us two or three empty cases of each type you use, or measure them at base and rim and tell us which bakes go in which. Frosting height comes next, measured on your tallest decorated cupcake.

Then pick the layout: a row of four, a square of six, or a dozen in three rows. The outer box follows from the insert, not the other way round. We send a custom quote by email within one working day; a four-cupcake box with insert starts from £0.25 and the proof, which is free, shows the insert both flat and assembled.

Production takes 4 to 7 working days once you approve it, and the flat boxes and dividers arrive free and tracked anywhere on the UK mainland in 2 to 3 working days. If your assortment includes macarons, the macaron boxes with slotted inserts take the same measuring approach for a much smaller cell.

Bakery Boxes with Dividers Questions

What buyers ask before ordering bakery boxes with dividers.

How do cupcake inserts hold each cake?

A raised card has round holes sized to the cupcake case, so each cake sits snugly and cannot tip into its neighbour. The holes are cut to the case base, which is why we ask for a sample case.

Can I mix cupcakes and brownies in one box?

Yes. A mixed insert with different cell sizes holds different bakes in one box. Send the sizes and the layout you want.

Will the frosting touch the lid?

Not if we size the box from the tallest item. We add a gap above the frosting so the lid stays clear.

Can the cupcake dividers be printed as well as the lid?

Yes. Printed dividers in a contrasting colour or with a small repeat pattern make the open box look finished. One-colour print on the insert adds little to the cost on a run of a few hundred boxes.

Can I use the same box for standard and mini cupcakes?

Often yes, with two different inserts. That keeps your stock of outer boxes simple.

Do I need a grease-resistant coating?

For doughnuts, brownies and buttery bakes, yes. It stops oil marking the outside print.

Can a flavour map for the twelve cells be printed inside the lid?

Yes, and it is popular for macaron and truffle assortments. Send the cell layout and flavour names and we set a numbered or illustrated key inside the lid on the proof so you can check the order matches how you pack.

Do the dividers arrive assembled?

No, they arrive flat with the boxes and slot together in seconds. Staff usually assemble a stack of inserts at the start of a shift.

Can I order a short run for a wedding dessert table?

Yes. Minimums are set per job, so short runs for weddings and events are welcome. Allow time for the proof and production.

How long until I can sell assortment boxes in my own packaging?

Making the bakery boxes with dividers takes 4 to 7 working days from proof approval. Add 2 to 3 working days for free tracked delivery to UK mainland addresses.
