Why Bakers Choose Kraft
Kraft board is unbleached, so it keeps the natural brown colour of the paper fibres. On a bakery counter it looks warm and handmade, which matches the style of many independent bakeries, cake makers working from home and stalls at farmers' markets. Bright icing and colourful toppings look vivid against the brown.
It is also a forgiving material for printing. A single dark ink, often black or a deep brand colour, looks deliberate on kraft and keeps costs down. White ink can be used for a striking contrast, and foil adds a touch of polish for celebration orders.
Kraft is also practical on a busy bake day. It hides small marks and flour dust better than white board, and boxes that have been handled a few times on a market stall still look presentable. For bakers who prefer a clean minimal look, a kraft box with a crisp white logo strikes a balance between rustic and refined. The same brown board with a white window lid is used on our bakery boxes with window lids.
Box Styles and Insert Layouts
Cupcake boxes are almost always used with an insert: a card platform with round holes that hold each cupcake by its case. Without one, cupcakes slide into each other and the frosting smears across the lid. The insert keeps each one upright, spaced and visible.
The outer box can be a one-piece tuck top with a window, a two-piece lid and base, or a gable box with a handle for carrying a pair of cakes. Window lids are popular because customers see the decoration without opening the box, which helps sales from a counter display.
Think about how most of your cupcakes leave the shop. If customers usually buy one or two to eat straight away, single and twin boxes are the workhorses. If you take orders for parties and offices, six and twelve cake boxes matter more, and a gable box with a handle makes larger quantities easier to carry. Most bakeries end up with three sizes that cover almost every order. The six-hole layout is shown in more detail on the six-hole cupcake boxes with inserts page.

Getting Cake Heights Right
The most common mistake with cupcake boxes is underestimating height. A cupcake with a tall swirl of buttercream, a macaron or a chocolate decoration on top can be much taller than the case itself. Measure your tallest regular design from the bottom of the case to the highest point of the topping, then add clearance so the lid does not touch.
Measure the case diameter at the top edge too, as the insert hole must hold the case without squeezing it. Standard cupcakes, muffins and mini cupcakes all need different hole sizes, so let us know which you bake. If you bake both regular and mini, separate inserts in the same outer box can be a cost-effective solution.
Toppers deserve special attention. Fondant figures, sugar flowers, chocolate shards and wafer decorations can stand well above the frosting and are easily knocked off by a low lid. If you offer decorated cupcakes for occasions, consider a taller box for those orders so the topper arrives intact. Our guide to measuring a product for a box covers frosting and topper heights.
Printing on Brown Board
Ink behaves differently on kraft than on white board. Colours print slightly darker and more muted because the brown shows through, so dark inks and bold designs work best. Pale pastels can look washed out unless they are printed over a white base layer.
Many bakeries keep it simple: a logo in black on the lid, a web address on the side and perhaps an illustration of a cupcake or whisk. A stamp-style circular logo looks right at home on kraft. Printing inside the lid, such as a short note or storage advice, is a small extra that customers notice.
If you sell for occasions such as birthdays, baby showers or weddings, a plain kraft box with a printed sticker or a ribbon can be personalised for each order without reprinting the whole box.
Grease, Moisture and Freshness
Buttercream and cream cheese frosting contain fat, which can mark uncoated kraft if a cake touches the box. The insert keeps cakes away from the walls, which is the best defence. For cakes with very rich frosting, a coated inner surface or a lining reduces marks.
Cupcake boxes are designed for carrying and short-term storage, not for keeping cakes for days. Box cakes as close to collection as possible and advise customers to keep them cool. Food-contact grade board is available on request for the insert and inner surfaces. Coatings that resist butter and moisture are described in the board and card types guide.
Market Stalls, Shops and Deliveries
At a market stall, speed and presentation both matter. Single and two-cake boxes that fold quickly let you serve a queue, while a stack of six-boxes ready to go makes larger orders easy. A window lets passers-by see the cakes even when they are boxed.
In a shop, consistent boxes in a few sizes look professional on the counter and keep storage simple. For local deliveries, a box that closes firmly and has a well-fitting insert protects your cakes on the drive, and a sticker seal shows the box has not been opened.
Outdoor stalls face weather, too. On a damp morning, plain kraft can soften slightly if boxes are stored uncovered, so keep flat stock in a plastic crate under the table and fold boxes as needed. A light aqueous coating on the outside adds some protection against drizzle and handling.
For wholesale customers such as cafés, a box that stacks well matters. Flat lids and a sturdy base let a café keep several boxes in a chiller without crushing the ones below. White versions of the same boxes are covered under custom cupcake boxes in white board.
Measure Your Tallest Swirl Before the Insert
Cupcake boxes fail at the lid, not the base. Pipe your tallest regular swirl, add any topper you use for occasions, and measure from the bench to the tip: a standard swirl sits at about 70 mm, a decorated one at 90 mm or more, and a lid that touches the frosting ruins the box's purpose. Decide which heights you sell most, because one box at 100 mm covers both, while a shorter box for plain cupcakes saves board. Count the cakes per box, note the case diameter, and the insert is cut to it.
Tell us the cakes per box, the cupcake size and height, the window and the print, and a custom quote comes by email within one working day, with prices from £0.25 per box and minimums quoted per job. The free proof comes first; production takes 4 to 7 working days after approval and delivery to UK mainland addresses is free and tracked in 2 to 3 working days. Boxes that arrive misprinted or damaged are reprinted or refunded if reported within 10 days. Bakeries that sell cupcakes singly from a stall often add the smaller printed cupcake bags for single cakes.

Kraft Cupcake Boxes Questions
What buyers ask before ordering kraft cupcake boxes.
Do kraft cupcake boxes come with inserts?
Yes, inserts with round holes are cut to your case size so each cupcake stays upright and spaced.
How tall should the box be for buttercream swirls?
Measure your tallest cake from the base of the case to the top of the frosting and add clearance. We set the box height from that measurement.
Does a window in a kraft cupcake lid show the frosting clearly?
Yes. The window is cut in the lid and backed with clear film, so the swirls and sprinkles show from above, and the brown board around it frames them well. The window is positioned on the proof so it clears the lid tuck.
Will coloured ink show on kraft board?
Dark inks show well. Pale colours look muted unless printed over a white base layer, which we can add.
Can kraft boxes be used for mini cupcakes?
Yes, mini cupcake inserts with smaller holes fit inside a shallower box.
Will buttercream mark the kraft board?
The insert keeps cakes away from the walls, which prevents most marks. A coated inner surface helps with very rich frostings.
Do cupcakes in paper cases need a food-contact grade box?
The cases keep the cake off the board, so a standard kraft board is fine for most orders. If frosting or bare sponge touches the insert, a food-contact grade board can be specified on request for the insert and inner surfaces.
Can I personalise boxes for each order?
A plain printed box with a custom sticker or ribbon lets you personalise for birthdays and events without reprinting.
What should customers do with the box afterwards?
Remove any window film before putting the box in the paper bin.
What does a kraft cupcake box cost?
Prices start from £0.25 per box depending on size and quantity. Send your details for a custom quote within one working day.
