Custom Round Cake Boxes

from £0.25 a boxPriced per job · low minimums

Custom round cake boxes are drum-style boxes with a lift-off lid, shaped to follow a round celebration cake instead of boxing it into a square. Cake designers and patisseries use them because they show off the cake, protect delicate decoration and make the hand-over feel like part of the occasion.

Why a Round Cake Suits a Round Box

Most cakes are round, yet most cake boxes are square. A round box follows the shape of the cake, so there is less empty space for it to slide into, and the walls sit evenly all the way round. When the lid lifts off, the cake is revealed from every side at once, which is a far more satisfying moment than pulling it out of the front of a square carton.

Round boxes also look special in their own right. Carried out of a bakery or set on a party table, a printed drum box reads as a celebration before anyone has seen the cake. For cake designers who put hours into sugar flowers, piping and painted details, that presentation matters as much as the protection.

Round boxes also suit cakes that are not purely celebration pieces. Cheesecakes, tarts, pavlovas and mousse cakes all have delicate edges that are easily damaged by square corners, and a round box keeps them centred and safe. Patisseries that sell whole tarts and gateaux from a counter often use round boxes as their standard pack for exactly this reason. Sheet cakes and slabs still belong in our square cake boxes for sheet cakes.

Construction Options

Round cake boxes are made in a few ways, depending on how premium and how reusable you want them to be: If you are weighing the two constructions, our guide to choosing rigid or folding compares them.

  • Rigid drum box with lift-off lid: sturdy and reusable, ideal for showpiece cakes
  • Folding round box: arrives flat and pops up, saving storage space
  • Box with a clear window lid or clear walls: shows the cake without opening
  • Tall round box: for tiered and tall layer cakes
  • Box with ribbon or rope handles: easier to carry
  • Round box with a base board slot: holds the cake board in place

Sizing Around Cake and Board

Always size the box to the cake board, not the cake. Most celebration cakes sit on a board 2 inches larger than the cake, so a 6 inch cake usually sits on an 8 inch board. Measure the board diameter and add a few millimetres so the board drops in easily but cannot slide. Then measure the full height of the cake including any toppers, flowers or tall decorations, and add clearance so the lid does not touch.

Tall cakes and tiered cakes need extra care. For tall cakes, a deeper box or a box with an extended lid keeps sugar work safe. Tiered cakes are often transported in a tall round box with the tiers already stacked and dowelled, or in separate boxes for assembly at the venue.

If you make several cake sizes, a small family of round boxes, such as 6, 8 and 10 inch boards, covers most orders and keeps storage simple. Boards cut to match are on our cake boards sized to the box page.

Materials and Food Contact

Rigid round cake boxes use a thick greyboard core wrapped in printed or coloured paper, giving a premium feel and the strength to carry heavy cakes. Folding round boxes use a strong white board that holds its shape once assembled. Food-contact grade board or an inner lining is available on request, though most cakes sit on their own board rather than touching the box.

Clear windows or clear acetate walls let guests see the cake in the box, which is popular for wedding and showpiece cakes displayed before cutting. Ventilation is not usually needed for decorated cakes, but tell us if you are boxing warm bakes so we can advise. The grades are explained in our board grades for cake boxes guide.

Design and Branding

A round box gives you a lid top and a continuous wall to decorate. A strong logo on the lid works well with the circular shape, and a pattern or band around the wall gives the box a finished look from every angle. Pastel colours, florals and soft patterns suit wedding and birthday cakes, while bold colours and graphic designs suit modern patisseries.

Foil in gold, silver or rose gold on the logo is popular, and a matt finish keeps fingerprints to a minimum when boxes are handled. A printed ribbon or a sticker with the customer's name adds a personal touch on collection.

Many cake makers keep the outside of the box simple and add personality on collection day. A plain coloured drum with a foil logo looks elegant for any occasion, and a printed ribbon, a gift tag or a small sticker can then carry a theme, a name or a message for that particular order. This approach lets you order larger quantities of one design while still making every cake feel personal.

If you also sell cupcakes, cake slices or cookies, matching their boxes to your round cake boxes in colour and logo placement makes your whole range look planned, whether customers collect a single slice or a three-tier showpiece. Our finishes compared for drum boxes guide shows foil and lamination on a curved wall.

Transport Tips for Cake Designers

Even a perfect box needs careful handling. Chill buttercream cakes before boxing so they are firm, use a non-slip mat in the car boot or footwell rather than the seat, and keep boxes out of direct sun. For long journeys, a box with handles is easier to lift without tilting.

Printing simple care instructions on the box, such as keeping it level and away from heat, helps customers who collect their own cakes get them home safely.

For deliveries, slide the round box into a slightly larger square outer box with some padding around it, or use a box with a firm base board slot so the cake cannot shift. Delivery drivers appreciate a clear 'this way up' mark on the lid, and a note asking them to place the box on a flat surface rather than a seat can prevent a lot of damage. A short line on the lid such as 'keep flat, keep cool' does the same job for customers. Daily orders that do not need a drum go in our bakery cake boxes for daily orders.

Size the Box to the Board, Then Check the Height

A round cake box is sized to the cake board, not the cake, because the board is what sits on the base and stops the cake sliding. Tell us the board diameters you use, usually 8, 10 and 12 inch, and the box follows with a few millimetres of clearance. Then check the height: measure from the base of the board to the top of the tallest decoration you make on that size, add 20 mm, and that is the wall height. Decide rigid or folding by the cake: a rigid drum with a lift-off lid for a showpiece that is carried by hand, a folding drum for daily orders. Artwork is a logo and a colour for the lid and the wall, sent as vector files, and the free proof shows both. A custom quote comes by email within one working day, minimums are quoted per job, and boxes are made in 4–7 working days after approval with free tracked delivery anywhere on the UK mainland. Smaller bakes with a carry handle go in our gable cake boxes for smaller bakes.

Round Cake Boxes Questions

What buyers ask before ordering round cake boxes.

Should I size the box to the cake or the board?

Always to the board. Measure the board diameter, add a few millimetres, and make sure the height clears the tallest decoration.

Can you make round boxes for tall cakes?

Yes. Tall round boxes and extended lids protect tall layer cakes and sugar work.

Do you make boxes for tiered cakes?

Yes, we make tall round boxes for stacked tiers that travel assembled, or separate boxes for tiers assembled at the venue. Tell us the tier diameters and the total height. Tall boxes use a thicker board so the walls stay straight.

Can a round cake box have a clear lid?

Yes, a clear lid window or clear walls let guests see the cake without opening the box. The clear panel is fitted inside the rigid frame. Keep decorations below the lid so nothing touches the window.

Rigid or folding, which should I choose?

Rigid boxes feel premium and can be reused. Folding boxes arrive flat and save storage space.

Can we add handles?

Yes, ribbon or rope handles make heavy cakes easier to carry without tilting. The handles are fixed through the rigid wall so they take the weight. Tell us the heaviest cake you box and we specify the handle.

Does the cake board sit directly on the box base?

Usually yes, so we supply food-contact grade board or an inner lining on request for the base and the walls. Tell us when you ask for the quote that the cake board sits on the box. A greaseproof disc under the board is another option.

Can we print care instructions?

Yes. A short note about keeping the box level and away from heat helps customers get cakes home safely.

Can we personalise boxes with the customer's name?

Yes, a printed sticker or a ribbon with a name adds a personal touch without changing the box design. Leave a clear panel on the lid for it. Stickers can be printed in the same order.

Which sizes do most bakers need?

A family of boxes for 8, 10 and 12 inch boards covers most celebration cake orders. A 6 inch box is worth adding if you sell small cakes. The same artwork scales to each size.

How quickly can boxes arrive?

Once you are happy with the proof, we need 4–7 working days to produce the order, and free tracked delivery to the UK mainland takes 2–3 working days after that. Rigid drums arrive made up; folding drums arrive flat. Tell us a date and we plan around it.
