Custom Gable Cake Boxes

from £0.25 a boxPriced per job · low minimums

Gable cake boxes are boxes with a tall, pitched top that closes into a built-in carry handle, like a small house with a roof. Bakeries, cake makers and party planners use gable cake boxes for cupcakes, slices and small treats that need to be carried rather than stacked.

A Box You Carry by the Handle

The gable shape solves a simple problem. Small cakes and treats are often bought to take somewhere: a party, an office, a friend's house. A flat box has to be held level with both hands, but a gable box has a handle at the top, so it can be carried in one hand like a bag. The box stays upright, and the contents stay level even on a crowded bus or a walk across a car park.

The pitched top also gives extra headroom. Cupcakes with tall swirls of buttercream, decorated cake pops and iced biscuits standing on their edges all need space above them, and the roof of a gable box provides it without making the box bulky.

For customers, the handle makes the box feel like a gift. It is the same reason gift bags are popular: something you carry by a handle feels like it has been chosen for someone. Whole cakes that need a flat lid and a carry handle use our handled bakery boxes for larger cakes.

Sizes for Cupcakes, Slices and Favours

Gable boxes come in many sizes, from tiny favour boxes holding a couple of macarons to larger boxes holding four cupcakes in an insert. The base size sets how many items fit; the height of the walls before the roof begins sets how tall they can be. Measure the base diameter and full height of your tallest bake, including any topping.

For a single cupcake, a base just wider than the case, with a wall height that clears the frosting, keeps it centred. For two or four cupcakes, an insert with round holes holds each one apart so they do not slide into each other. For a slice of cake, a wider and shallower base suits the triangle shape.

Our size rows below are starting points. We always size to your bakes, and the proof shows the internal measurements before anything is printed.

Board and Grease Resistance

Cake boxes need a clean, bright board that can handle buttery, sugary contents. We use folding board with a grease-resistant inner face, so butter from frosting or brownies does not soak through and spoil the print. Food-contact grade board is available on request.

White board makes printed colours bright and looks fresh on a bakery counter. Kraft board gives a rustic, homemade feel that suits artisan bakers and farmhouse-style brands. Both fold neatly into a strong gable that keeps its shape when carried.

For heavier contents, such as a box of four large cupcakes, a slightly thicker board stops the handle stretching or tearing. Tell us what will go inside and we will choose the board weight. The grades are explained in our board grades for food boxes guide.

Designing Printed Gable Cake Boxes

The roof panels of a gable box are the most visible surfaces, as people see them from above and from the side as the box swings by its handle. They are the natural place for the logo. The side walls can carry a pattern, a tagline or contact details. Many bakers print a simple repeating pattern so the box looks good from every angle.

A window in one or both sides shows off the cupcakes or treats inside. Clear film keeps dust off and still lets customers see the decoration, which is often the whole point of the purchase.

For parties and events, gable boxes can be printed with names, dates or themes. Small runs of personalised favour boxes are common for birthdays, christenings and weddings. One colour on kraft and full colour on white are shown in our print finishes compared guide.

Who Uses Gable Cake Boxes

High street bakeries and cafés use them for takeaway cupcakes and treats. Home bakers selling through markets and social media use them because they look professional and are easy to carry. Wedding and event planners use small gable boxes as favours, filled with a slice of the wedding cake or a few sweets. Party suppliers sell them as ready-made favour boxes.

Coffee shops use them for pastries and cookies bought to go, and dessert parlours use them for take-home treats such as cheesecake slices, mini tarts and filled cookies that customers want to save for later in the evening.

Schools, charities and clubs use printed gable boxes for cake sales and fundraising events.

Corporate clients order them too, filled with a cupcake or brownie as a thank-you to staff or a treat at a product launch. A gable box with a company logo on the roof panels turns a simple bake into a branded gift, and the handle makes it easy to hand out across a busy office or a stand at a trade fair. Single slices sold at the counter go in our cake slice boxes for single portions.

Assembly and Storage

Gable boxes arrive flat and fold into shape without glue. The base locks into place, the walls stand up, and the two roof panels meet at the top where the handle slots together. With a little practice, each box takes only a few seconds to make up.

Store flat boxes in a cool, dry place away from steam and ovens, as moisture can soften board. Make up boxes in batches before a busy day so they are ready to fill.

If you are making cake slices or cupcakes for an event, fill the boxes as close to collection as possible so frosting stays fresh and firm.

On warm days, keep filled boxes away from sunny windows and car dashboards. The board protects against knocks but not heat, and buttercream softens quickly. A tip printed on the base, such as keep cool and enjoy today, is a helpful reminder for customers. Whole celebration cakes move to our full cake boxes for whole cakes.

Measure to the Top of the Frosting, Not the Case

A gable box has a pitched roof, so the usable height is less in the corners than in the middle, and that is where cupcake swirls get flattened. Pipe a cupcake the way you sell it, measure from the base to the top of the swirl, and tell us that height with the case diameter; we set the roof so the swirl sits under the ridge with clearance. Decide the count per box, one, two or four, because a four-cupcake gable needs an insert and a wider footprint. Choose kraft or white board by your branding and say if a window is wanted on one side. Artwork is a logo and a colour for the roof panels, sent as vector files, and the free proof shows the flat box with the roof, handle and window marked. A custom quote comes by email within one working day with boxes from £0.25 and minimums per job, so a single party order is fine. Production takes 4 to 7 working days after approval with free tracked UK mainland delivery. Our measuring a cupcake for the roof height page shows where to put the ruler.

Gable Cake Boxes Questions

What buyers ask before ordering gable cake boxes.

How tall should a gable box be for a cupcake?

Measure the cupcake including its frosting and add a little clearance. The wall height before the roof should clear the topping.

Can gable boxes hold several cupcakes?

Yes, twin and four-cupcake gable boxes use a card insert with round holes to keep each cake in place under the roof. The insert is cut to your case diameter. Single cupcake gables do not need one.

Will butter from frosting mark the box?

We use board with a grease-resistant inner face to keep butter from soaking through to the print. Cupcakes carried home within an hour rarely mark plain board, but a display cabinet is a different matter. Tell us how long the boxes sit filled.

Do gable boxes need glue?

No, they fold together with locking tabs on the base and a slotted handle on the roof. Staff fold them in a few seconds at the counter. They arrive flat in bundles.

Can I add a window to see the cakes?

Yes, a clear film window on one or both roof panels shows the decoration without opening the box. Keep the window clear of the handle slot so the roof stays strong. We draw the window on the proof.

Can wedding favour gable boxes carry guest names?

Yes, gable boxes can be personalised with names, dates or a theme for parties and weddings. Names are printed as a variable panel or added as a small label after printing. Tell us the guest list format and we advise which is cheaper.

Does kraft or white board suit a gable cake box?

White board shows bright colours and looks fresh beside a pastel cupcake; kraft suits rustic, artisan brands and hides small marks. Both fold neatly and take a window. Print one colour on kraft or full colour on white.

How strong is the handle?

The handle carries normal cake loads easily. For heavier boxes we use a thicker board.

How much do gable cake boxes cost?

Prices start from £0.25 depending on size, board and print. Your custom quote for gable cake boxes lands in your inbox within one working day.

How should I store flat gable boxes in a bakery?

Keep them flat in their bundles in a cool, dry place away from the oven and the steam of a dishwasher. Damp board loses its crease and folds badly. A shelf above the counter is usually fine.

Can I order for one party?

Yes, minimums are quoted per job, so a small run for one event is normal. Short runs are priced per job rather than per thousand. Send the date and we plan the proof around it.
