Custom Cake Slice Boxes

from £0.25 a boxPriced per job · low minimums

Custom cake slice boxes are wedge-shaped cartons cut to the angle of a single slice, so a portion of gateau or cheesecake travels home standing up rather than sliding around a square box. Cafés and dessert counters use them to sell slices to take away without the icing ending up on the lid.

Why a Wedge Beats a Square Box

A slice of layer cake is tall, soft and heavy at one end. Put it in a square box and it tips over at the first corner, smearing cream across the walls and losing its clean cut face. A triangular box follows the shape of the slice, with the point of the wedge holding the tip of the cake and the wide back supporting the crust.

The snug fit keeps the slice upright, so the layers are still visible when the box opens. That matters for desserts sold on looks: a neat stripe of sponge, jam and buttercream is half the appeal of a slice of Victoria sponge or a rainbow cake.

Wedge boxes also use less board than a square box big enough for the same slice, and several fit together in a circle on a counter or in a delivery bag, like the slices of the original cake. The same argument applies to brownies, which is why brownie boxes cut to the portion are sized to the bake rather than a standard square.

Window, Handle and Lid Options

A window in the lid or the side lets customers see the slice without opening the box. Side windows show off the layers; top windows show the decoration. Either way, a window turns the box into a display piece on a chilled counter.

Hinged lids that fold back from the wide end make it easy to slide a slice in with a cake server, and the customer can eat straight from the box with a fork. Boxes with a small carry handle on top suit takeaway counters where customers walk away with a coffee in one hand.

For cheesecakes and tarts that are short and flat, a lower-profile wedge with a lift-off lid works better than a tall box. A lid window with clear film is shown on the bakery boxes with window page, and the film is the same here.

Sizing Custom Cake Slice Boxes

Two measurements decide the size: the height of the slice and the length from the tip to the back of the crust. The angle of the wedge depends on how many slices you cut from each cake. A cake cut into eight has a wider angle than one cut into twelve or sixteen.

Measure your tallest cake, including any decoration on top, and add room so the lid does not touch the icing. If you sell several cake heights, size the box for the tallest and use a small card insert or a cake board for the shorter ones.

Send us your cake diameter, how many slices you cut and the height of the slice, and we will work out the wedge angle and box dimensions for you.

If you are switching from square boxes, bring one of your current slices on a plate to the measuring stage rather than relying on the recipe card. Real slices are rarely as neat as the numbers suggest.

Board, Coatings and Food Contact

Cake boxes are usually made from white or kraft folding board. White board looks clean and shows colour print brightly; kraft gives a homemade, artisan feel. For creamy and buttery cakes, a grease-resistant coating on the inside stops oil soaking into the board and leaving marks on the outside.

Food-contact grade board is available on request, which is important if the slice sits directly on the base of the box without a paper doily or board. Tell us what you sell, whether it will be refrigerated and how long it stays in the box, and we will suggest the right board and coating.

For chilled counters, condensation can soften board. A coated board holds its shape better when slices are taken in and out of the fridge. The coated and uncoated boards named above are compared in the board and card guide.

Branding That Works on a Small Box

The box is small, but it gets seen. A logo on the lid and a pattern on the sides is often enough. Some cafés print a short line on the inside of the lid, such as a thank-you or a reminder to keep the slice refrigerated, which is seen as soon as the box opens.

If you sell cakes from several bakers, keep the box neutral and add a sticker with the cake name. That way one box design works for every flavour, and the stickers can change daily.

Colour can do practical work too. A different box colour for vegan, gluten-free or nut-free slices helps staff pick the right box at a glance and reassures customers with allergies. Pair the colour with a clear sticker and keep the allergen information on your counter labels as usual.

Think about the moment the box is handed over. A customer holding a coffee in one hand will appreciate a box that closes with a firm tuck rather than a fiddly slot, and a handle means they can hook it over a finger. Small details like these make a slice to go feel like a treat rather than an afterthought. A single small logo on the lid is the usual choice, printed the same way as on printed cupcake boxes.

Who Uses Slice Boxes

Coffee shops sell slices to go alongside a takeaway drink. Dessert parlours and cake shops sell slices as a cheaper alternative to a whole cake. Restaurants pack leftover dessert for customers to take home. Caterers and event planners use them for wedding cake slices, so guests can take a piece home after the reception.

Online cake businesses send slice boxes in tasting packs, letting customers try several flavours before ordering a whole cake for a party. In that case, a small mailer with an insert holding three or four wedges keeps them upright in the post.

Supermarket cafés and garden centres with large cake displays also find wedge boxes useful, because staff can pack slices quickly at a busy counter and the boxes stack neatly in a bag with other shopping. Wedding caterers who hand out slices at the end of the night sometimes prefer the small pastry boxes with tuck lids for mixed desserts.

Measure the Slice at the Back Edge

A wedge box is defined by three numbers: the length from point to crust, the width across the back edge and the height of the slice including any decoration. Bakers often measure the length and forget the back width, which is what decides whether the slice slides in cleanly. Cut a typical slice, stand it on a board and measure all three, then add 5 mm to each so a tall swirl of buttercream does not touch the lid.

Send those figures with the style you prefer, any window or handle, the board and the quantity. A quote comes back by email within one working day, and the free proof shows the window outline against the wedge so you can see how much of the layer is visible. Boxes are made in 4 to 7 working days after approval and reach UK mainland addresses by tracked courier at no charge; crushed or misprinted boxes reported within 10 days are reprinted or refunded. Cafés that sell whole cakes too usually match the print to their full-size cake boxes.

Cake Slice Boxes Questions

What buyers ask before ordering cake slice boxes.

How do I work out the wedge angle?

It depends on how many slices you cut from each cake. Tell us the cake diameter and the number of slices, and we will calculate the angle.

Will a tall layer cake fit?

Yes, if we size the box for it. Measure the tallest slice including decoration and add room so the lid does not touch the icing.

Can I add a window to show the layers?

Yes. Side windows show off the layers, and top windows show the decoration.

Will cream or butter mark the box?

A grease-resistant inner coating stops oil soaking into the board. We recommend it for creamy and buttery cakes.

Can the slice sit directly on the box base?

For slices placed straight onto the card, ask for food-contact grade board. Many cafés also use a small card base or doily under the slice.

Are slice boxes suitable for the fridge?

Yes. A coated board holds its shape better if boxes go in and out of a chilled counter.

Can a customer eat the slice straight from the wedge box?

Yes, that is how most slices are eaten on a bench outside the shop. The board on the food side is grease-resistant, the lid folds back out of the way and the wedge shape leaves room for a fork. If you want the slice to sit on a surface you can state is food-contact grade, ask for that board on the quote.

Can you make boxes for wedding cake slices?

Yes. Smaller wedge boxes printed with names or a date, or plain with a sticker, are popular as take-home favours.

Can I post slices in these boxes?

For posting, place the wedges in a mailer with an insert that holds them upright. We can make tasting pack mailers for that purpose.

Will one wedge design work for a Victoria sponge and a chocolate fudge cake?

Usually, because the shape is the same and only the height differs. Make the box tall enough for your highest slice and the lower ones still sit well. For flavour, a small printed panel or a sticker on the lid does the job without a second print run.

Can a small café order a short run?

Yes. Minimums are low and quoted per job, so small cafés and home bakers can order printed slice boxes.
