Custom Bagel Boxes

from £0.25 a boxPriced per job · low minimums

Custom bagel boxes let a bakery send out six or twelve bagels in one tidy, branded carton instead of a paper bag that squashes the top layer. We make them with carry handles or windows, in board that copes with seeds and the odd smear of cream cheese, and send a free design proof first.

Why Bagels Need Their Own Box

Bagels are dense and heavy for their size, which is exactly why paper bags let them down. A bag of twelve sags at the bottom, the ones on top get squashed, and seeds end up all over the counter. A box keeps the bagels in neat rows, takes the weight on a flat base and gives the customer something sturdy to carry out of the shop.

Boxes also suit the way bagels are bought. Office breakfasts, weekend family orders and catering trays all involve several bagels at once, often with spreads and fillings on the side. A box handles those orders much better than a bag, and it looks far more generous when it is opened on a meeting room table.

There is also the question of freshness. A box with a little air around the bagels keeps the crust from going soft the way it does in a sealed plastic bag, so customers who buy for the next morning get a better bagel. For that reason, many bakeries prefer an unsealed tuck lid or a handled gable box with small gaps at the folds. Bakeries that sell loose rolls alongside often use plain bakery boxes for bread and rolls for those orders.

Styles of Custom Bagel Boxes

The right style depends on how customers carry the box and if the bagels should be on show.

Many bakeries keep two styles: a handled box for walk-in customers and a flatter tuck box for delivery and catering, where boxes are stacked in a van or bag.

  • Gable box with handle: a built-in handle across the top makes it easy to carry a half-dozen to the car. Great for takeaway counters.
  • Tuck-top box with window: a flat lid with a clear window shows the bagels without opening the box. Ideal for display and gifting.
  • Hinged lid box: a lid that folds back like a pastry box, suiting catering trays of mini bagels or filled bagels.
  • Sleeve and tray: a tray holding the bagels slides into a printed sleeve, which gives a neat finish for premium or gift orders.

Getting the Size Right for Six or Twelve

Measure a typical bagel from your own bake, not a supermarket one. Hand-rolled bagels vary, and a generous New York style can be 110 mm across while a smaller everyday bagel is closer to 90 mm. Add a few millimetres to each so they fit without forcing.

For a half-dozen, most bakeries use either two rows of three lying flat or a single row of six standing on edge. Lying flat is better for seeded and topped bagels; standing up uses less counter space and fits a narrow handled box. A dozen usually sits as two layers of six or three rows of four, depending on how deep or wide the box should be.

If you sell filled bagels, plan a separate box. Fillings add height, and a box for plain bagels is usually too shallow for a stacked salt beef or salmon bagel.

A quick test pays off. Fold a sample box, load it with a full batch straight from the cooling rack and carry it around the shop. If the bagels shift or the handle bends, the size or board needs adjusting before you order in quantity. Our guide to measuring baked goods for a box covers rows, layers and headroom.

Board, Coatings and Food Contact

Bagels are not especially greasy, but toppings, butter and spreads can mark plain board. A board with a grease-resistant inner surface keeps the box clean and stops oil showing through to the printed outside. For boxes holding filled or buttered bagels, this is worth having.

White board gives the cleanest base for colourful branding. Kraft board suits bakeries with a rustic, traditional feel and hides the odd seed or flour mark better. Food-contact grade board is available on request for boxes where bagels sit directly on the board without a liner.

A sheet of printed greaseproof paper in the base is a simple extra that keeps the box clean and adds another branded touch. The same liner and film options are used on our bakery boxes with a clear window.

Printing That Suits a Bakery

Bakery branding tends to work best when it is warm and simple. A bold logo on the lid, your opening hours on the side and a short line about your bake are often all you need. Many bagel shops print a menu or ordering details on the back or base, so office orders turn into repeat orders.

Kraft board with one or two colours of print is economical and looks honest. Full colour on white board suits bakeries with illustrated or photographic branding. A window shows off the bake itself, which is often the best advert a bakery has.

Think about the box from the customer side too. A phone number and web address on the end panel are visible when boxes are stacked on an office kitchen counter, which is exactly where the next order is decided. Shops that want the handle as the main feature can start from bakery boxes with carry handles.

Who Orders Bagel Boxes

Bagel bakeries are the obvious buyers, but they are not the only ones. Cafés that sell bagels for breakfast use boxes for office orders and catering. Delis use them for brunch boxes with bagels, cream cheese and smoked salmon. Coffee shops near offices often run bagel and coffee bundles in a single branded box.

Event caterers order them for breakfast meetings and conferences, where a box of filled mini bagels can feed a table without plates. Farmers' market traders use handled boxes so customers can carry a half-dozen home alongside their other shopping.

Some bakeries also sell bagel boxes as part of a gift, such as a weekend brunch hamper with jam, coffee and spreads. A box with a window and a printed sleeve suits this kind of order and can be priced as a premium product. The bakery and cake box range covers the brunch hamper and cake boxes those traders stock beside bagels.

Load a Sample Box Straight From the Cooling Rack

A bagel box fails in the hand, not on paper, so before ordering take a measured box, fill it with a full batch still warm from the rack and carry it round the shop. If the handle bends on a dozen, or seeded tops rub the lid, the size or board needs changing, and that is the moment to tell us. Measure your own bagels across the widest point, decide flat or on-edge for the half-dozen, and plan a deeper box for filled bagels rather than forcing them into the plain one.

Send the bagel size, the count per box, the style and the quantity, and a custom quote comes back by email within one working day, with simple boxes from £0.25 and minimums quoted per job. The free proof shows every panel, including the menu on the base if you want one. Production takes 4–7 working days after approval and the boxes arrive flat by free tracked delivery to UK mainland addresses in 2–3 working days. Misprinted or damaged boxes reported within 10 days are reprinted or refunded. Shops that bake pastries too usually add croissant boxes in the same board to the order.

Bagel Boxes Questions

What buyers ask before ordering bagel boxes.

How many bagels fit in a standard bagel box?

We make boxes for single bagels, half-dozens and dozens. The exact fit depends on your bagel size, so measure one from your own bake before ordering.

Should bagels lie flat or stand on edge in the box?

Lying flat protects seeded and topped bagels. Standing them on edge uses less space and suits narrow handled boxes for plain bagels.

Will butter or cream cheese mark the box?

A grease-resistant inner coating stops oils soaking through to the printed side. We recommend it for boxes holding filled or buttered bagels.

Can I add a window to see the bagels?

Yes, a clear window on the lid is popular for display and gifting. Tell us whether the box will sit in a chiller, as condensation can affect windows.

Is food-contact grade board available for bagel boxes?

Food-contact grade board is available on request. Many bakeries also add a printed greaseproof liner in the base.

Can a box carry a dozen bagels without sagging?

A dozen is heavy, so we use a stiffer board and a locking base for these sizes. A handled gable box works for half-dozens, but a flat box is better for twelve.

Can you make a box for bagels with spreads on the side?

Yes. A card divider or small compartment can hold tubs of cream cheese or spreads alongside the bagels.

Do bagel boxes arrive ready made?

They arrive flat in cartons to save space and fold up quickly behind the counter. Handled gable boxes have a lock base that pops into shape.

Can I print my menu on the box?

The back or base is a good place for a short menu and ordering details, which helps turn office orders into repeat custom. Keep prices off the printed box if they change often and use a sticker instead.

Can I order boxes for a farmers' market start?

Minimums are quoted per job, so smaller first orders are possible. Mention your market dates and we will plan production around them.

Will a dozen seeded bagels scratch the window film?

Seeds can mark a thin film if the bagels sit tight against the lid, so we leave a little headroom above a flat layer and use a thicker film on dozen boxes. A printed greaseproof liner under the bagels catches loose seeds. Boxes that arrive with cracked folds or marked windows are reprinted or refunded when reported within 10 days.
