The Box Your Customers See Most

Celebration cake boxes get the attention, but the box that does the most work in a bakery is the humble everyday one. It goes out with the morning cinnamon buns, the lunchtime slice of lemon drizzle and the Saturday tray bake for the family. Because it leaves the shop dozens of times a day, it is also the box most people will associate with your name. A printed bakery box turns every one of those small sales into a reminder of where the treat came from.

The challenge is to keep the box quick to fold, affordable in volume and strong enough not to crush the bake. That rules out anything fussy. Most of our bakery customers settle on one or two simple styles in a handful of sizes and print them all with the same artwork.

Kraft or White: Picking the Board

Kraft board is brown on both sides and has a rustic, handmade look that suits sourdough bakeries, coffee shops and home bakers. It hides small marks and crumbs, and a single dark ink logo looks smart on it without needing full colour. White board, or white-topped board with a kraft or grey back, gives brighter colours and crisp detail, which suits patisseries and bakeries with a colourful brand.

For anything buttery, such as croissants, Danish pastries and shortbread, we recommend a grease-resistant coating on the inside so oil does not mark the outside print. Food-contact grade board is available on request, and we will note it in your quote if you need it for your records. The kraft and white boards are compared in the board and card types guide, including how each takes a grease-resistant coating.

Styles for Custom Bakery Boxes

Three styles cover almost every everyday bakery need, and all of them are delivered flat. Handles and windows are the two most common additions; the bakery boxes with handles page shows the handle styles.

  • One-piece tuck-top box: folds up in seconds with a hinged lid and front tuck, the workhorse for slices, buns and pastries
  • Lock-corner tray with lift-off lid: two pieces, sturdier, good for tray bakes and boxes of six or more
  • Window box: a clear panel in the lid so customers can see what they bought without opening it
  • Gable-style carry box: a handle on top for a couple of buns or a small loaf

Sizing Around What You Bake

Start with your best sellers. Measure the largest version of each, including icing and toppings, then decide how many go in each box. A slice of layer cake needs height more than footprint; a box of four cinnamon buns needs footprint more than height. Add around 5 mm on each side and 10 mm above the tallest bake so the lid never squashes frosting.

Then try to consolidate. Three well-chosen sizes usually cover a whole counter: a small box for one or two items, a medium box for four to six, and a larger box for tray bakes or a dozen. Fewer sizes means simpler stock, lower prices per box and fewer half-used bundles in the storeroom. The 10 mm rule and how to measure a domed bake are in the product measuring guide.

Print That Earns Its Keep

A bakery box lid is a small billboard, so keep the design bold. Your logo, your website or social handle and perhaps a short line about what you do are enough. On kraft, one or two colours look intentional and cost less. On white board, full colour lets you use illustrations or a repeating pattern that becomes recognisable across town.

Think about the inside lid too. A thank-you message or a note asking people to tag you in a photo costs little in one colour and gets seen at exactly the right moment. Matt varnish suits most bakery artwork; gloss lifts strong colours. Foil and embossing are better saved for gift and celebration ranges. A single-colour logo on kraft costs the least and is the print used on our plain kraft boxes with a logo.

High-Street Bakers and Home Kitchens

We supply bakery boxes to independent high-street bakeries, café counters, farmers' market traders, home bakers selling through social media and wholesale bakers supplying cafés. Home bakers often start with a small run of kraft boxes and a one colour logo, then move to full colour once orders grow. Wholesale bakers tend to order plain branded boxes in larger volumes, then use labels to show which café or product each box holds.

Café owners who buy in their cakes from a wholesale baker are another group worth mentioning. They often want the box to carry the café's own name rather than the baker's, so the customer associates the treat with the place they bought it. A printed bakery box in the café's colours, with a sticker on the end for the bake name, gives them that without the cost of a separate box for every cake.

Home bakers face a slightly different challenge. Orders arrive through messages and social media, and the box is often the first physical contact a customer has with the business. A neat, printed box with your name and handle makes a home kitchen look like a proper bakery, and it gives the recipient a way to find you when they want to order for themselves. Home bakers who sell at markets usually start with windowed bakery boxes, because the bake sells itself through the lid.

Start With Your Three Best-Selling Bakes

Do not try to box the whole counter at once. Pick the three products you sell most, say a six-pack of cookies, a loaf and a slice of cake, and size one box to each. Measure the bake at its widest and tallest, add 10 mm, and you have your three internal sizes. Run those first; the pastries and seasonal bakes can share a fourth size once you have seen how the first three behave at the till.

Email the three sizes, the styles you like, rough quantities per size and your logo, and we reply with a quote within one working day. The free proof shows the logo on each lid so the family of boxes looks consistent. Production takes 4 to 7 working days after approval and the boxes arrive by tracked courier at no charge within UK mainland; crushed or misprinted boxes reported within 10 days are reprinted or refunded. Shops that sell by the slice usually add single-slice cake boxes as the fourth size.

Bakery Boxes Questions

What buyers ask before ordering bakery boxes.

How many box sizes does a small bakery really need?

Most bakeries manage with three: one for one or two items, one for four to six, and one for tray bakes. We can help you choose sizes from your best sellers.

Is kraft or white board better for a bakery?

Kraft suits a natural, handmade look and hides marks well. White gives brighter print for colourful brands. Both can be made with a grease-resistant inner coating.

Will butter from croissants mark the box?

It can on uncoated board. A grease-resistant coating inside the box stops oil spreading through to the outside print.

Can I print on kraft in full colour?

Yes, but colours look darker and warmer because the board is brown. For bright artwork, white board gives truer colour; on kraft, one or two strong inks usually look best.

How long does it take to fold a tuck-top box?

A few seconds once staff have done it a couple of times. No glue or tape is needed, which matters on a busy morning.

Can I add a window to my bakery box?

Yes. A clear panel can be set into the lid at the size you choose. It helps customers check their order and makes the box look generous on the counter.

Can a thank-you note be printed inside a bakery box lid?

Yes. A one-colour message or your social handle on the inside of the lid prints in the same pass as the outside and costs very little. It is the first thing a customer sees when they open the box at home, so many bakeries put a reorder prompt or a short story about the bake there.

I bake from home. Can I order a small quantity?

Yes. Minimums are quoted per job, so home bakers can start with a modest run and scale up later.

Do you keep my box design for next time?

Yes. Dielines and artwork are kept on file, so a reorder only needs the quantity and any changes.

If I approve my bakery box proof today, when do the boxes reach the shop?

Production takes 4 to 7 working days from approval, then delivery takes 2 to 3 working days by tracked courier, which is included for UK mainland addresses. In practice that means a proof signed off on a Monday has boxes on the counter within about two weeks. Tell us if you have a launch date and we plan around it.

Can I get matching bags and stickers?

Yes. Printed carrier bags and stickers can be quoted with your boxes so the whole counter carries the same branding.
