Custom Bakery Cake Boxes for Counter Sales

from £0.25 a boxPriced per job · low minimums

Bakery cake boxes are the boxes a whole cake leaves the shop in, and for many customers they are the first and last thing they see of your bakery after the cake itself. We make them with carry handles, window lids and sturdy bases, sized around your tins and printed with your name.

The Journey From Counter to Table

A whole cake rarely goes straight home. It gets carried along a high street, put on the floor of a car, balanced on a lap on the bus and handed over at a birthday party. Each step puts the cake at risk: sliding into a wall, lid touching the icing, base bending under the weight of a sponge. The box has to deal with all of that while still looking good enough to hand over as a gift.

That is why bakery cake boxes differ from the plain white boxes sold by the hundred. A proper counter box has a base that stays flat, walls high enough to clear the decorations and a lid that closes firmly. A handle, a window and a print that carries your name finish the job.

Many bakeries also find that a good box changes how customers value the cake. A beautiful sponge handed over in a flimsy, plain carton loses something; the same cake in a firm, printed box with a window feels like a special purchase, which supports the price you charge for a celebration bake. Bakeries that deliver celebration cakes often add a lower, sturdier custom cake box for delivery runs alongside the counter box.

Handles, Windows and Lids

The choice of style depends on how your customers carry cakes and how you display them. A gable-style box with a fold-up handle is easy to carry with one hand and keeps the cake level. A box with a separate lid gives the most room for tall decorations. A window lid lets the cake be seen on the counter and through the walk home, which works well for showpieces and celebration cakes. Our bakery boxes with carry handles page shows the handle shapes in more detail.

Sizing Boxes Around Your Tins

Most bakeries bake in a handful of tin sizes, so the easiest approach is to size boxes around those. Take the tin diameter, add the overhang of the cake board and around 10 to 20 mm of clearance on each side so the cake can be slid in without catching. For height, measure the tallest decorated cake you sell in that size, including toppers, and add space so the lid does not brush them.

A small bakery may only need three sizes: one for 6 inch cakes, one for 8 inch and one for 10 inch, each with enough height for a two-layer sponge. Larger or tiered cakes usually need a deeper box or a box with an extension collar.

Square boxes are the norm even for round cakes, because they are easier to fold, stack and carry, and the corners give hands somewhere to hold without touching the lid. For long loaf cakes, traybakes and rectangular celebration slabs, a rectangular box sized to the tin keeps the cake from shifting lengthways. If you also sell cheesecakes or tarts in their own foil or card bases, measure the base rather than the cake so the box suits what actually goes in. If several tins are close in size, the guide to measuring for a box explains how to group them into one size.

Boards and Coatings

Cake boxes are made from folding board with a smooth, white or kraft surface. Food-contact grade board is available on request, which is important where cream or icing may touch the walls. A grease-resistant coating inside helps keep butter and oil from showing through the print, particularly for rich fruit cakes and buttercream-heavy designs.

Heavier board is worth the small extra cost for large cakes. A big cheesecake or a dense fruit cake can weigh enough to bow a thin base when lifted by the handle. We suggest a board weight with every quote and can price a thicker option alongside if you are unsure.

Kraft board suits rustic bakes and naked cakes, while bright white board makes pastel icing and colourful sprinkles look their best through a window. The board weights and coatings we use are listed with their typical uses.

Printing That Brings Customers Back

A cake box travels to parties, offices and family gatherings, and it sits on a table for hours while people ask where the cake came from. Your bakery name, website and phone number on the lid and sides answer that question. Full colour printing suits illustrated designs, while one or two spot colours on white or kraft board keeps the look classic and the cost lower.

Keep the window clear of important text, and put contact details on the side panels as well as the lid, so they are still visible when the box is stacked. A short line inside the lid, such as storage tips or a thank you, is a thoughtful extra.

If you change your menu or prices often, avoid printing those on the box itself. A box that only carries your name and contact details will stay useful for every order, while menus and offers can go on a small leaflet tucked under the lid.

Practical Tips From the Counter

Bakers often tell us the same things after their first order. Order more of the most popular size than you think you need, because celebration seasons can come round quickly and running out at the weekend is painful. Keep flat boxes away from ovens and steam, as warm, damp air softens board. Fold a few boxes each morning so they are ready, rather than making them up as customers wait.

If you sell both whole cakes and slices, a matching slice box or cupcake box in the same design makes the counter look coordinated and builds recognition quickly.

Keep a few spare boxes in the next size up for the cake that grows a topper at the last minute. For cakes that need to be seen from the shelf, the window bakery boxes for counter display suit the same tins.

Start With Your Most Common Tin Size

Bakeries that try to cover every cake in one order usually end up with too many of the wrong box. A better first run is one size, built around the tin you bake in most, usually the 8 inch. Measure the baked and decorated cake rather than the tin, because buttercream and a drip add 10 to 15 mm all round, and note the tallest topper you regularly use. That gives us the internal size and the lid height, and the second run adds the 6 inch and 10 inch once the first works on the counter.

Send those measurements with your logo and a rough weekly volume and a custom quote comes by email within one working day, with minimums set per job. The free proof shows the handle, window and print flat before anything is made; production is 4 to 7 working days after approval and tracked UK mainland delivery is free and takes 2 to 3 working days. Boxes that arrive crushed or misprinted are reprinted or refunded if you tell us within 10 days. Matching printed cake boards for the base can be quoted on the same email.

Bakery Cake Boxes Questions

What buyers ask before ordering bakery cake boxes.

How much space should a cake box leave above the icing?

Leave enough clearance for the tallest decoration plus a margin, usually at least 20 mm. For toppers and drip cakes, measure the highest point. We set the box height to suit.

Can I get a box with a handle that keeps the cake level?

A gable top box with an integrated handle keeps the cake level when carried. It suits most single-tier cakes up to medium sizes.

Can the window be on the lid and the front?

Yes. Windows can be cut in the lid, the front or both. Keep enough board between the windows so the box stays strong.

Do you supply matching cake boards?

Cake boards can be cut to match the inside base of the box. They make it easier to slide the cake in and out.

Will butter marks show through the box?

A grease-resistant coating inside helps stop oil marking the print. It is worth choosing for buttercream and rich fruit cakes.

What box works for a tall layered cake?

A lid and base box or a box with an extension collar gives the most height. We size it from your tallest cake including toppers.

Can I order boxes for three tin sizes with one design?

Yes. Several sizes can share one design and be quoted together. Each size has its own proof.

Do cake boxes with handles arrive flat or already folded?

They come flat in bundles and fold up in a few seconds at the counter, including the handle. Keep the bundles in a dry cupboard away from the ovens so the board stays crisp and folds cleanly.

Can I print allergen details on the box?

Allergen and storage notes can be printed on a side panel. If they change often, a blank panel for a sticker is more flexible.

How much notice does a bakery need to give for a new box design?

Allow around two weeks from sending your tin sizes. The proof usually goes back within a day, the boxes are made in 4 to 7 working days after approval, and free tracked delivery to the shop takes another 2 to 3 working days.

What if some cake boxes arrive creased?

Report any damaged or misprinted boxes within 10 days with a photo and we will reprint or refund them.
