Two Very Different Pancake Products

Pancake packaging splits neatly into two jobs. The first is dry mix: a bag of batter powder that needs an outer carton strong enough to stand on a shelf, with room for cooking instructions and a serving suggestion on the front. The second is ready-made pancakes, sold chilled, frozen or ambient, where the box usually holds a tray or a sealed stack and has to cope with the fridge or freezer.

Mix boxes behave much like cereal cartons. A tall, slim tuck-end box with an inner bag is the usual format, and the large front panel gives you plenty of space for a photograph of a golden stack dripping with syrup. Ready-made pancake boxes are often shorter and wider, shaped around a round or square stack, and some use a window so shoppers can see the texture of the pancakes before they buy.

Brands that sell both often keep the same front design and simply change the proportions, so the mix and the ready-made range sit side by side on the shelf as one recognisable family.

Choosing the Right Carton Style

The style should follow how the product is stored, opened and used at home. A few options cover most pancake products: If you are torn between a tuck end and a crash-lock base, our guide to choosing between carton styles compares them.

  • Straight tuck-end carton: the classic choice for dry pancake mix with an inner bag
  • Reverse tuck-end carton: similar, with flaps that close in opposite directions for a cleaner front
  • Window box: a clear panel shows ready-made pancakes, waffles or crêpes
  • Sleeve over a tray: a printed sleeve slides over a plastic or board tray for chilled stacks
  • Crash-lock base: a quick-forming base for heavier mix boxes and multipacks
  • Tear strip or perforated opening: helps shoppers open the box neatly and reclose it

Sizing Around Pouches and Stacks

For dry mix, start with the filled inner bag. Measure it lying flat with the top folded as it will be in the box, then add a few millimetres all round so the bag slides in without catching. A 500 g mix in a typical gusseted bag usually suits a carton around 150 mm wide, 60 mm deep and 220 mm tall, but bag shapes vary, so measuring your own is always better than guessing.

For ready-made pancakes, measure the diameter of the pancakes and the height of the stack you sell. American-style pancakes are thicker and smaller across, while crêpes are wide and thin and are often folded into quarters before packing. Allow a little air above the stack so the lid does not press down and flatten the top pancake, especially if the box will be stacked in a freezer.

Shelf height is worth checking with your stockists before you finalise anything. A box that is a few millimetres too tall for a supermarket shelf ends up lying on its side, and nobody can read the front. Our method for measuring a pouch for a carton covers settling and seal allowances.

Board and Print for Breakfast Shelves

Dry mix cartons are usually made from a white folding boxboard around 300 to 350 gsm, which takes bright full colour print and stays crisp on the shelf. Food-contact grade board is available on request for boxes where the product touches the board directly. For chilled and frozen pancakes, ask about a board with a moisture-resistant coating so the box does not soften in the cold.

Breakfast packaging sells on appetite appeal, so photography matters. Full colour CMYK printing reproduces warm golden tones and syrup highlights well, and a gloss lamination or varnish makes the photograph glow under supermarket lighting. Matt finishes suit more artisan or premium brands, and a spot UV on the pancake image can lift it off a matt background.

Use the back panel wisely. Clear cooking instructions, the number of pancakes each pack makes, allergen information and a simple recipe idea all help the shopper choose you over the box next to yours.

Small Brands and Café Retail

Not every pancake box goes to a supermarket. Farm shops, delis and cafés that sell their own pancake mix often want a smaller run with a handmade feel. Kraft board with a one or two colour print gives that look, and a printed label on the side can carry batch details if your recipe changes with the season's flour.

Pancake cafés and breakfast spots sometimes sell takeaway stacks too. For those, a small carry-out box with a vented lid keeps pancakes warm without trapping steam, and printing your café name on the lid turns a breakfast order into a walking advert. Gift boxes that pair a bag of mix with a small bottle of syrup also work well for café counters. Cafés selling fresh pancakes at the counter also use our bakery boxes for café counters.

Multipacks, Variants and Shelf Presence

Many pancake brands sell more than one recipe, such as buttermilk, protein, gluten-free or chocolate chip. Giving each variant the same layout with a different colour panel and flavour name lets shoppers spot their favourite quickly while keeping the brand block strong on the shelf. Because the structure stays the same, we can run several variants together, which keeps setup sensible for smaller producers.

Pancakes compete with cereal, granola and breakfast bars for space and attention, so the box needs to suggest everyday use rather than an occasional treat. A back-panel idea for a quick weekday breakfast, a savoury filling or a lunchbox suggestion reminds shoppers the mix is useful all year. Multipacks of ready-made pancakes can use a simple outer sleeve that groups several trays, so you can offer a better-value pack without designing a new carton.

Weigh a Filled Pouch and Measure It Standing Up

Pancake mix settles, so a 500 g pouch measured flat on a table is not the pouch that has to fit the carton. Fill one, seal it, stand it up, let it settle for a minute and measure the width, depth and height at that point; add 5 mm each way and that is the carton. For ready-made stacks, measure the stack with its film or tray. Decide whether the carton needs a resealable top for mix or a freezer-grade board for frozen crêpes, because those change the specification. Artwork covers the front image, the back nutrition panel and the instructions, so send the pancake photography at print resolution, the nutrition text and a barcode file, and we return a free proof showing every panel. A custom quote arrives by email within one working day, minimums are quoted per job for a small brand or a farm shop, and cartons are printed and finished in 4–7 working days after approval with free tracked UK mainland delivery. Waffles and crêpes in the same range are boxed on our waffle boxes for the same breakfast range page.

Pancake Boxes Questions

What buyers ask before ordering pancake boxes.

Can you make boxes for both pancake mix and ready-made pancakes?

Yes. We make tall tuck-end cartons for dry mix and shorter, wider boxes or sleeves for ready-made stacks. Many brands keep one front design across both so the range looks connected.

Will the box hold up in a freezer?

Ask for a moisture-resistant coated board for chilled or frozen pancakes. It helps the box keep its shape and print quality in cold, damp conditions.

Can we add a window to show the pancakes?

A clear window on the front or lid shows the texture of ready-made pancakes, waffles or crêpes. We position it so it does not interrupt your logo or key text.

What size carton suits a 500 g pancake mix?

A carton around 150 x 60 x 220 mm suits many 500 g mixes, but bag shapes vary. Send us your filled bag measurements and we will size it exactly.

Can the box be resealed after opening?

A tuck-end lid closes again easily, and a perforated tear strip can give a neat first opening. Most mix brands also use a resealable inner bag.

Is food-contact board available for pancake boxes?

Board with a food-contact grade is available on request for this job. Let us know if the pancakes will touch the board directly.

Which finish makes pancake photos look best?

Gloss lamination or varnish brings out warm golden tones under shop lighting. Matt finishes suit artisan brands and can be combined with spot UV on the photo.

Can we fit nutrition and allergen information on the box?

Yes. The back and side panels give plenty of space for instructions, allergens and nutrition tables, and your proof shows them at actual size.

Do you make takeaway boxes for pancake cafés?

Yes, we make small carry-out boxes with a vented lid that keeps a stack warm without trapping steam, printed with your café name and logo. Tell us the stack size and whether syrup pots travel in the same box. Grease-resistant board is specified for these.

Can farm shops order a small run?

Yes. Minimums are low and quoted per job, and kraft board with a one or two colour print is a popular choice for smaller producers.

How soon can new pancake boxes reach us?

Production takes 4–7 working days after you approve the free proof, then free tracked delivery to the UK mainland takes 2–3 working days. Allow a few days before that for the quote and the proof. Around two weeks from approval to delivery is typical.
