Custom Panettone Boxes with Carry Handles
Custom panettone boxes are tall cartons built around the shape of a domed sweet bread, with enough headroom to protect the crown and a handle so customers can carry one home without squashing it. Italian delis and bakeries use them to give a loaf baked in-house the same presence on the shelf as an imported brand.

Built Around the Dome
Panettone is unusual among breads. It is baked in a paper mould, it rises high above the rim into a soft dome, and once cooled it is light, airy and easily dented. A standard cake box is far too shallow, and a generic gift box leaves it rolling about. The box needs to be taller than it is wide, with the base sized to the mould and enough clearance above the crown that the lid never touches it.
Most panettone boxes are square in plan, which stacks better than round, with the paper mould sitting in the middle. Some bakers prefer an octagonal or hexagonal box that echoes the round loaf and looks distinctive on a shelf. Both work; square is simpler to fill and pack into outer cartons, while multi-sided boxes win on presentation.
Think about how the box opens, too. A top-opening box lets the customer lift the loaf out by its paper mould, which is the gentlest way to handle it. Side-opening boxes look elegant but make it harder to remove a tall loaf without tipping it, so they suit smaller sizes best.
A window panel on one side is another option. It lets shoppers see the golden crust and the height of the rise, which is often what convinces them that a loaf baked on the premises is worth the price.
Handles and Closures
A carry handle is almost expected on a panettone box. Customers buy them to take to someone else's home, and a handle saves them from hugging a tall box all the way there, which is the same reason bakery boxes with handles sell. There are several ways to build one in.
- Ribbon or cord handles threaded through punched holes in the top flaps, the traditional Italian look.
- Die-cut card handles formed from the box itself, cheaper and quicker to assemble.
- Gable tops where two raised panels meet and form a handle, suited to smaller loaves.
- Lift-off lids with a ribbon tied round the whole box, for a more formal gift presentation.

Measuring the Paper Mould
Size the box from the baked panettone, not the empty mould. Measure the diameter of the paper mould at its base, then the total height from the base to the top of the dome after baking, following the measuring guide for custom boxes. Bakes vary a little, so take the tallest loaf from a batch rather than an average one. We then add clearance on each side and above the crown.
Common bake sizes are a small individual loaf, a mid-sized family loaf and a large celebration loaf. Many bakers sell two of these, and a matched pair of boxes in the same design looks good side by side. If you also make pandoro, colomba or other tall breads, tell us; a pandoro star shape is wider at the base and may need a different footprint.
Board and Food Contact
Most bakers wrap the panettone in a clear or printed bag before boxing it, which keeps the crumb soft and protects it from the board. In that case a strong white or kraft folding board is ideal. If the loaf will sit unwrapped inside the box, ask for food-contact grade board, which is available on request.
Butter-rich doughs can mark uncoated board through the paper mould, so a grease-resistant inner surface is worth considering if the loaves are boxed while still very fresh. A heavier board grade keeps tall boxes from bowing when they are stacked several high in a shop or delivery van.
If you deliver to other shops, stack boxes in a slotted outer carton rather than loose in crates. The outer takes the weight off the individual boxes during the journey, and the tops arrive unmarked.
Designs With an Italian Accent
Panettone packaging has a strong visual tradition: rich colours, ornate borders, illustrations of the bakery or the town, and serif lettering with a touch of gold. Many delis lean into that tradition, and it helps shoppers recognise the product immediately; the print and finish options compared page shows how gold foil sits on heavy board. Others take a modern route with a clean single-colour logo on kraft, which suits small bakeries making a contemporary loaf.
The four tall side panels give plenty of room. One panel can carry the name and flavour, another the ingredients and allergens, a third a short story about the bake and the fourth a pattern or the bakery address. Foil blocking on the name, an embossed crest and a matt laminate all add a sense of occasion without fuss.
Flavours and Range Planning
Bakers often make a classic fruit panettone alongside chocolate, pistachio or citrus versions. Rather than a separate box for each, a common approach is one base design with a flavour sticker, a printed tag on the ribbon, or a coloured band across the front panel. That keeps one large print run while letting shoppers tell flavours apart at a glance.
If you do want a fully printed box per flavour, flavours that share a box size can run together, which keeps costs sensible. We will show every version on the proof so you can check names and colours side by side.
Bake One Loaf, Let It Cool and Measure the Dome Before You Order
Panettone rises differently in every oven, so the mould size on the packet is not the number to send. Bake a loaf from the recipe you will sell, let it cool fully, then measure the paper mould at its base and the height from the base to the top of the dome. Add clearance above the crown so the lid never touches it, and say if the loaf is bagged before boxing, since an unwrapped loaf calls for food-contact grade board, available on request. Pick the handle too: ribbon for the family loaf, a die-cut card handle for minis.
Send the loaf sizes, the handle preference and your artwork, and a custom quote arrives within one working day, with low minimums quoted per job. A free design proof comes before anything is printed. Production takes 4 to 7 working days after approval and free tracked delivery reaches UK mainland addresses in 2 to 3 working days, so order ahead of the first bake and keep a few spare boxes for a loaf that rises higher than usual. Bakers who also sell loaf cakes often add matching bread loaf packaging to the order.

Panettone Boxes Questions
What buyers ask before ordering panettone boxes.
How much space should there be above the dome?
Enough that the lid never touches the crown when the box is closed or stacked. We size from your tallest baked loaf and add clearance so the dome is not flattened.
Can I use one box for both panettone and pandoro?
Sometimes. Pandoro is wider at the base because of its star shape, so a box sized for it may be loose for panettone. Send both sizes and we will advise.
Which handle style is strongest?
Ribbon or cord handles through reinforced holes carry heavier loaves comfortably. Die-cut card handles suit smaller loaves and save assembly time.
Should the panettone be bagged before boxing?
Most bakers bag it to keep the crumb soft. If you prefer to box it unwrapped, ask for food-contact grade board.
Can the box be octagonal instead of square?
Yes. Octagonal and hexagonal boxes look distinctive and echo the round loaf. They take slightly longer to fold than a square box.
How do I label different flavours without separate boxes?
Use one base design with a printed flavour tag, sticker or coloured band. It keeps one print run while shoppers can still tell flavours apart.
Will tall boxes collapse when stacked in the shop?
Not with the right board. We use a heavier grade for tall boxes so they hold their shape when stacked several high.
Can you print the bakery's story on the box?
Yes. A tall side panel is a good place for a short paragraph about the bake. Keep it brief and in a readable type size.
Are matching outer cartons available for delivery?
Yes. We make plain or printed outer cartons that hold several boxed loaves for delivery to shops or hamper packers.
How early should I order before baking starts?
Allow for the free proof, 4 to 7 working days of production and tracked delivery, plus time to fold boxes. Ordering well ahead of your first bake avoids a rush.
Can I order a small run for a first batch?
Yes. Minimums are low and quoted per job, so small bakeries can start modestly and reorder once they know demand.
