Why Bakers Switch From Plain Bags to Custom Cookie Bags
A plain white bag does its job, but it does nothing once the customer has walked away. A printed cookie bag keeps your name in front of people while they eat, sits on a desk at work for the afternoon and gets photographed when the bake looks good. For small bakeries and stallholders who sell most of their stock loose, the bag is often the only packaging the customer ever sees.
Bags also make weighed sales easier. When cookies, biscotti or florentines are sold by the 100 g or 250 g, a bag that is cut to the right width and depth stops staff from overfilling to make the pack look full. Customers see a neat, flat-bottomed pack that stands on the counter rather than a crumpled paper sack. The same print files can be reused for cookie mylar bags if you want a matching range.
Three Materials, Three Different Jobs
Glassine is a smooth, slightly translucent paper with natural grease resistance. It is the classic choice for butter-rich bakes such as shortbread, millionaire's slices and chocolate chip cookies straight from the tray, because the fat does not bleed through as quickly as it does with untreated paper. It takes one or two spot colours well and has a soft sheen that suits traditional bakery branding.
Kraft paper bags have a brown, honest look and a little more stiffness, which helps when the bag has a block bottom and needs to stand up on a shelf. Kraft can be lined with a thin grease-resistant layer if you are bagging oily bakes. Clear or part-clear film bags are best when the cookie itself is the selling point, for example iced biscuits, stuffed cookies or anything with visible fillings, and they can be heat sealed to keep the contents fresher for longer.
If you are unsure, send us a photo of the bake and tell us how long it needs to sit on the shelf. That is usually enough for us to suggest the right material. Bakers who also box larger orders usually look at our printed biscuit boxes for gift orders at the same time.

Getting the Width and Depth Right
The most common mistake with cookie bags is ordering them too wide. A single 90 mm cookie looks lost in a 150 mm bag and slides around until it breaks. Measure the widest bake you sell and add about 15 to 20 mm to give enough room to drop it in without catching the edge. For stacked cookies, measure the stack height and add that to the bag depth along with a fold allowance at the top.
For block-bottom bags, the gusset matters as much as the face width. A deeper gusset lets a bag stand on its own and hold a stack of six or eight thin biscuits upright. Flat bags without a gusset work better for one or two large cookies laid flat, or for bags that will be hung on a peg. Our guide to measuring a product for packaging uses the same method.
- Flat bags: best for single large cookies and slim biscuits
- Block-bottom bags: stand on the counter, good for weighed portions
- Side-gusset bags: tall packs for biscotti and stacked cookies
- Window bags: paper front with a clear film panel to show the bake
Print Options That Suit Paper and Film
Paper bags print best with strong, simple artwork. A clear logo, a short line about your bakery and your web address or social handle will read well even on textured kraft. Fine detail and pale tints can disappear into kraft, so we will flag that on your proof if we think it will be a problem. Glassine takes ink with a slightly softer edge, which many bakers like because it looks less corporate.
Film bags can be printed in full colour with sharp detail, and you can leave clear areas in the design so the cookie shows through exactly where you want. A white ink layer behind your artwork keeps colours bright on clear film. If you change flavours often, consider a single printed design plus a small flavour sticker, which saves ordering a separate run for each bake. Print on paper and film is compared in our print and finish comparison guide.
Closures, Freshness and Shelf Life
How you close the bag depends on how long it sits before it is eaten. Cookies sold the same day are fine in a folded paper bag with a sticker or a twist of string. Bags that sit on a shelf for several days need a better seal, and that usually means film or a lined paper with a heat seal across the top. Resealable zip closures are useful for larger bags of biscuits that families dip into over a few days.
Tin ties are a good middle ground for kraft bags: they fold down neatly, look tidy and let customers reclose the bag. We can also add a hang hole if you want to display bags on a peg rail at the till. Single bakes for a party bag often go into small birthday cookie boxes instead of a bag.
Selling Bagged Cookies at the Counter and Online
Where the bag is displayed changes what it needs to do. On a counter beside the coffee machine, bags are picked up and put back several times a day, so a stiffer kraft or a block-bottom bag that holds its shape keeps the display tidy. A basket of flat glassine bags works well for a grab-and-go impulse buy, especially if the print is bold enough to read from the queue.
Market traders often need bags that survive a breezy day and a bit of handling from customers checking flavours. A sealed film bag with a hang hole can be clipped to a stand or a rail, which keeps stock off a crowded table. For online orders, bag the cookies first and then pack them into a small box with a little padding, because a bag alone will not protect a crumbly bake in the post.
Think too about the back of the bag. It is a useful spot for an ingredients panel, allergen information or a short note about how the cookies are baked, and printing it saves you adding a separate label to every pack. Postal orders travel best in a bag inside one of our paper cookie boxes for the post.
Ordering Your Cookie Bags
Send us your bake sizes, the material you prefer and roughly how many bags you go through in a month. We reply with a custom quote by email within one working day, and minimums are quoted per job so a small bakery is not forced into a huge order. Once you approve the free design proof, production takes 4 to 7 working days and delivery to UK mainland addresses is free, tracked and usually takes 2 to 3 working days.
If the bags arrive misprinted or damaged, tell us within 10 days and we will reprint or refund. Food-contact grade materials are available on request, so mention if the bags will hold unwrapped bakes directly. You can see how quantity affects the unit price in the guide to how pricing works.

Cookie Bags Questions
What buyers ask before ordering cookie bags.
Which material is best for buttery cookies?
Glassine or a kraft bag with a grease-resistant lining is the safest choice for butter-rich bakes. Untreated paper will show oil spots within hours. Film bags also stop grease marks entirely if you prefer a clear pack.
Can I see the cookie through the bag?
Yes. Choose a clear film bag, or a paper bag with a film window cut into the front. We position the window on your proof so it lines up with the bake.
How wide should a single cookie bag be?
Measure your largest cookie and add 15 to 20 mm. That gives enough space to drop it in cleanly without leaving it loose enough to break.
Do cookie bags stand up on a counter?
Block-bottom and side-gusset bags stand up once filled. Flat bags do not, so they suit peg displays or baskets instead.
Can I reseal the bags after opening?
We can add a zip closure to film bags or a tin tie to kraft bags. Both let customers fold the bag shut again between servings.
Is there a way to use one bag design for several flavours?
Yes. Many bakers print one branded bag and add a small flavour sticker at packing time. It keeps your order simpler and avoids running out of one design.
Are the bags suitable for direct contact with unwrapped bakes?
Food-contact grade materials are available on request. Tell us when you ask for a custom quote and we will specify the right stock.
How does printing look on brown kraft?
Bold, dark artwork reads well on kraft, while pale tints and very fine lines can fade into the brown. We point out anything likely to print weakly on your free design proof.
Can the bags be heat sealed?
Film bags and lined paper bags can be heat sealed with a standard bar sealer. Plain glassine and unlined kraft are better closed with a fold and sticker or a tin tie.
How soon could I have bags for a market weekend?
Production runs 4 to 7 working days after you approve the proof, and free tracked delivery to UK mainland addresses then takes 2 to 3 working days. Approving your proof early is the easiest way to hit a fixed date.
What happens if some bags arrive damaged?
Report any misprints or damage within 10 days of delivery. We will reprint the affected bags or refund them.
