Packaging for a Hobby Full of Small Parts

Aquarium products are an awkward mix. A single brand might sell tubs of pellet food, boxed air pumps, heaters with long cables, glass thermometers, water conditioner bottles and complete tank kits with a lid, light and filter inside. Each one needs a box that protects it, explains it and looks like it belongs to the same family on the aquatic shop wall.

Fishkeepers also read packaging closely. They want to know the tank volume a filter is rated for, the wattage of a heater, the species a food suits and what is included in a kit. A well-planned box answers those questions on the shelf, which saves shop staff from opening boxes to check and saves you from returns when someone buys the wrong size.

We help small aquatic brands and established suppliers alike to build a box set that covers their range with consistent artwork, so a customer who likes your food recognises your filter on the next visit. p2 Brands that also sell for birds or reptiles use the same approach as our printed boxes for bird seed.

Box Styles for Food, Equipment and Kits

The right construction depends mainly on weight and fragility. Light consumables can sit in a printed folding carton; anything with glass, a motor or a heavy transformer needs more support. p0 For heavy filters and heaters, the construction is close to our boxes for small appliances.

  • Tuck end cartons for fish food tubs, conditioner bottles and test kits
  • Hanging cartons with a euro slot for air stones, nets and small spares
  • Window boxes so buyers can see decorations, plants or ornaments
  • Crash lock base boxes for pumps, heaters and lighting units
  • Corrugated printed boxes for glass tanks and starter kits
  • Mailer boxes for online aquatic retailers shipping direct

Protecting Glass Tanks and Fragile Equipment

Glass is the main worry. A nano tank or a starter kit with a glass body needs printed corrugated board, usually with corner pieces and an internal frame that stops the glass touching the outer walls. We can design card or corrugated inserts that hold the tank, the lid and the accessories in separate compartments, so the filter cannot slide across the glass in transit.

Heaters and thermometers are long and thin, so they suit a narrow tuck box with a card cradle. Pumps and canister filters have weight concentrated in the motor, which means a crash lock base is far more reliable than a simple tuck. If your product ships by courier, tell us, and we will quote a board grade that stands up to sorting depots as well as a shop shelf.

Inserts can also stop small loose parts such as suction cups, tubing and spare impellers from escaping. A simple card tray with labelled pockets makes the unboxing tidier and helps the buyer check nothing is missing.

Printing Clear Product Information

Aquarium boxes carry a lot of text: tank volume, flow rate, power, dimensions, what is in the box, care instructions and safety notes. Full colour printing lets you combine bright product photography with clean tables and icons. Underwater imagery and blue-green palettes are popular, but a clean white box with sharp photos gets noticed in a shop where every other pack is blue.

Keep technical data in the same place across your range, for example a side panel with a consistent layout. Buyers comparing two filters will thank you, and staff can point to the right panel when answering questions. A barcode area, batch code space and any compliance marks your product needs should be planned into the artwork from the start. Our design team will check text size and placement on the free proof. p1 Small spares sold on a peg are covered on our hang tab boxes with a window page.

Choosing Board for Aquarium Boxes

Folding card is ideal for anything up to the weight of a small pump. It prints very sharply, folds flat for storage and keeps costs low.

Corrugated board is the choice for tanks, larger filters and multi-item kits. E-flute is thin enough to print well while adding real crush strength, and B-flute offers more protection for heavy items. Gloss lamination on either board helps the box shrug off damp hands in a fish room, which is a real consideration for products handled near water. Matt lamination gives a calmer look if you prefer it. p1 The flute options are compared on our double wall corrugated boxes page.

Building a Range That Looks Like One Brand

Aquatic shops tend to group products by type, not by brand, so your food sits next to five other foods and your heater next to five other heaters. A consistent design system is what ties your range together across those different bays. Pick one strong colour or band that appears in the same position on every box, keep the logo the same size and use the same photography style throughout.

Colour coding inside that system helps buyers choose quickly. Tropical, coldwater and marine lines can each have their own accent colour, and food for different species can carry a small fish silhouette so a beginner grabs the right tub. These details are cheap to print but make the shelf easier to shop.

If you are refreshing an existing range, we can quote the whole set together and print in one run where possible. That keeps colours consistent from box to box, which is harder to achieve when different products are printed months apart. We can also hold your approved artwork on file so later reorders match the first batch. p2 Shops that stock your range in a counter unit can use a printed counter display box in the same colours.

List the Whole Range Before Pricing One Box

Aquatic brands usually come to us with one product, a new filter say, and we always ask for the full list before quoting. Three box sizes with inserts can cover food tubs, pumps and heaters, and pricing the set together brings every unit price down while keeping the artwork consistent across the shop wall. Send the dimensions and weight of each item, the tank volume or wattage that goes on the panel, and the number of each you sell a month.

For glass, say whether the kit goes by courier or only by pallet to shops, because that decides the board grade. The custom quote arrives by email within one working day, from £0.25 for a small folding carton, with the minimum set per job so one product can test the new look first.

The free proof shows each box flat with the specification panel in position. After approval, production takes 4 to 7 working days and delivery to UK mainland addresses is free and tracked. Brands that sell dry food in bulk alongside the tubs often add resealable pouches for pet food in the same artwork.

Aquarium Boxes Questions

What buyers ask before ordering aquarium boxes.

Can you make boxes strong enough for a glass nano tank?

Yes. Glass tanks go in printed corrugated board with internal inserts and corner protection. Tell us if the kit will be couriered so we can quote a suitable board grade.

Which box style suits fish food tubs?

A tuck end carton or a printed sleeve works well for tubs and pots. Many food brands also use a hanging carton for sachets and small tubs.

Can the box show the filter through a window?

Yes, a clear film window can be added to most folding cartons. For heavy equipment we usually keep the window small so the box stays rigid.

Will lamination help in a damp fish room?

Gloss or matt lamination adds a protective layer that resists splashes and wet hands much better than uncoated card. It also keeps printed specifications readable after repeated handling in store.

How should I measure a filter with pipes attached?

Measure at the widest and tallest points with pipes and brackets in the position they will be packed. If pipes detach, pack them separately in an insert and measure the main body only.

Can inserts keep accessories separate in a starter kit?

Yes. We design card or corrugated inserts with compartments for the filter, heater, food and small parts, so nothing rubs against the glass.

Can one aquarium box size cover a filter, a heater and a pump?

Often, yes. A 200 x 150 x 250 mm carton with different die-cut inserts can hold a small canister filter, a coiled heater or an air pump with its tubing, and one print run then covers three lines. The insert, not the box, changes per product.

Do you print technical specification tables?

Yes. Full colour printing handles fine text and tables. We check text size on the free proof so specs stay readable.

Is there a hanging option for small spares?

Hanging cartons with a euro slot suit nets, air stones, suction cups and replacement media sold on pegboard displays. They let shops display small accessories at eye level without taking shelf space.

How quickly can new filter boxes be ready?

Production takes 4–7 working days after proof approval, and free tracked UK mainland delivery takes 2–3 working days. Allow a little extra time if you are still finalising technical text on the artwork.

Some of my filter boxes arrived crushed. What do I do?

Send photographs within 10 days of delivery and we reprint the crushed boxes or refund them. Keep the sound boxes and carry on packing; nothing needs to be returned first.
