Compostable Stand-Up Pouches in Kraft Paper With a Plant-Based Lining
Stand-up pouches made from kraft paper laminated to a film based on plant starch and cellulose, with a bottom gusset, a tear notch and an optional zip. They hold coffee, granola, dried fruit, pet treats and other dry goods, print in full colour, and come with a quote that names every layer so you can describe the pouch accurately on your pack.

The Layers in the Pouch
A stand-up pouch is a laminate, and this one has three parts. The outside is kraft paper, natural brown or white-faced, which takes the print. The inside is a film based on plant starch and cellulose that gives the pouch its seal, its barrier against moisture and its ability to hold a zip. Between them is a bonding layer from the same film family. The zip and the tear notch are from the same material system as the lining.
The quote names the film maker and the paper, and the film maker's data sheets are available from the material supplier on request. We do not make disposal claims about the pouch ourselves; any statement you print on it is yours to approve with your own advisers. Most brands print a short line naming the materials and an instruction rather than a general claim.
What the lining does in practice: it keeps dry goods dry for a shelf life of a few months, holds aroma reasonably well, and seals on a standard heat sealer. It is not a high-barrier foil laminate, so for products that need a year on the shelf or an oxygen barrier, the kraft stand-up pouches with foil lining remain the better choice and we will say so when you tell us the product.
- Outer: natural or white-faced kraft paper
- Inner: plant-starch and cellulose based film for sealing and barrier
- Zip, tear notch and gusset from the same material family
- Optional clear window in the matching film
Pouch Formats
The stand-up pouch with a bottom gusset is the classic shape: it stands on a shelf, holds between 50 g and a kilo depending on size, and has a tear notch above the zip. A flat-bottom pouch has a box-like base and square sides that stand taller and look more premium for coffee. Both take the same lining and print.
A front window shows the product and is cut in the matching clear film so the pouch stays one material system. A hang hole in the top seal lets the pouch hang on a retail peg. A one-way valve for coffee is available in a matching material on request, and we note it separately on the quote because it changes the pouch's construction.
Sizes run from a sample pouch for 50 g up to a family pack for 1 kg of granola. The sizes in the table are the ones we fill most often, but the pouch is made to your dimensions. The flat-bottom pouches for coffee page shows the square-base format in more detail.

Print on Kraft Paper
The kraft outer prints in full colour or in one or two spot colours. On natural brown kraft, colours sit darker and warmer and white prints as cream; a white underprint under the artwork restores the brightness where it matters. White-faced kraft gives accurate colour across the whole pouch and still looks like paper.
Matt is the natural finish and suits almost every food brand. We do not add a gloss film laminate or a foil block to this pouch, because both add a layer that does not belong in the construction. Print on the back panel, the gusset and inside the window area is all included in the same pass.
Keep text above 6 pt and barcodes in black on a plain background. We send a free design proof as a flat layout and as a dimensioned pouch so you can check the panel positions before plates are made. The coffee bags printed with your roast use the same artwork rules if you are running both products.
Filling and Sealing
The pouches arrive flat with the bottom gusset folded, the zip closed and the top open. Fill through the top, then seal with a heat sealer at a slightly lower temperature than you would use on a foil laminate; we include the setting on the delivery note. A hand impulse sealer is fine for small runs and a band sealer for larger ones.
The seal is strong once cooled. Leave sealed pouches for a minute before stacking so the seal sets. The zip works like any press-to-close zip and is designed to be opened and closed many times by the customer. The tear notch starts a clean tear across the top seal.
Store empty pouches flat, in their carton, away from damp and sunlight. Fill within about nine months of delivery, after which the lining can stiffen and seal less evenly. If you need pouches filled on a machine, tell us the machine and we check the format suits it; the stand-up pouches for machine filling page lists the common formats.
What Goes in Them
Coffee beans and ground coffee, with a valve if the beans are freshly roasted. Granola, muesli and oats. Dried fruit, nuts and seeds. Loose-leaf tea and herbal blends. Pet treats and dry pet food in small bags. Bath salts, loose soap flakes and dry cosmetic powders. Flour, sugar and baking mixes for small-batch bakers.
What they are not for: wet or oily foods, anything that needs an oxygen barrier for a long shelf life, and products that will be frozen. For those, a foil-lined or a retort pouch is right and we will suggest it rather than supply a pouch that does not suit the product.
Many food brands order a pouch and a matching label, using the label for variable details such as roast date or flavour so the pouch print stays the same across the range. Our labels sized for coffee pouches are printed on a paper stock that suits the kraft outer.
Barrier and Shelf Life
The plant-based lining keeps moisture out well enough for dry goods to stay crisp for a few months in normal retail conditions. It holds aroma reasonably, though not as tightly as foil. Light passes through the kraft paper only where there is a window, so a windowless pouch protects light-sensitive products such as tea and herbs.
If your product has a tested shelf life on a different pouch, run a small trial on this one before switching the whole range. We send sample pouches with the quote on request so you can fill, seal and store a few and check them after a month. That trial is the best evidence you can have for your own labelling decisions.
For products that are sold within a few weeks of packing, such as roasted coffee and fresh granola, the barrier is more than enough. The tear-notch pouches for single servings use a similar lining for sample sizes.
Quote, Proof and Delivery
Send the pouch size, the capacity, the format, the number of print colours and the quantity, with your artwork or just a logo. A custom quote comes by email within one working day and names the paper, the film and the zip. Minimums are low and set per job, and single-colour pouches start from £0.25 on larger runs.
A free design proof shows the artwork on the flat and the finished pouch. Production takes 4–7 working days after approval and delivery is free and tracked to UK mainland addresses in 2–3 working days, flat in cartons. Misprints or damage reported within 10 days are reprinted or refunded. If you also need a retail box for the pouches, the bags and pouches range overview links to the cartons we make to fit them.

Compostable Stand-Up Pouches Questions
What buyers ask before ordering compostable Stand-Up pouches.
What is the pouch made of?
Kraft paper on the outside laminated to a film based on plant starch and cellulose on the inside, with a zip and tear notch from the same film family. The film maker is named on the quote.
Do you make a disposal claim on the pouch?
No. We describe the layers on the quote and print the wording you supply. Data sheets are available from the material supplier on request.
How good is the barrier?
Good enough for dry goods for a few months. It is not a foil barrier, so products that need a long shelf life or an oxygen barrier should use a foil-lined pouch.
Can the pouch have a see-through panel?
Yes. The window is cut in a clear film from the same material family so the pouch stays one system.
Can I add a coffee valve?
Yes, in a matching material. It is quoted separately because it changes the construction.
Will the pouch seal on my heat sealer?
Yes, at a slightly lower temperature than a foil laminate. The setting is on the delivery note and we send samples so you can test.
Does the kraft outer take full-colour print?
Yes. On natural kraft colours print darker and warmer; a white underprint or the white-faced kraft gives accurate colour.
What should not go in these pouches?
Wet or oily foods, frozen products, and anything needing a long shelf life. We will suggest a different pouch for those.
How long can I store empty pouches?
About nine months flat in their carton, away from damp and sunlight.
Is there a minimum pouch order?
Minimums are kept low and quoted per job, which suits a snack brand testing one flavour. Send the pouch size, the fill weight and the quantity and we price that exact run.
How long from artwork to filled-ready pouches?
Allow around three weeks in total. The quote arrives within one working day, the proof needs your approval, production then takes 4–7 working days and free tracked UK mainland delivery takes 2–3 more.
