A Small Notch That Changes the Experience

Anyone who has wrestled with a sealed snack bag knows the problem: the film stretches, the seal holds, and the bag finally splits down the side, scattering the contents. A tear notch solves it with a tiny V or straight cut in the side seal, placed just below the top. It gives the tear a starting point, so the film opens along a straight line across the bag. The customer gets a tidy opening, the contents stay inside, and nobody reaches for a knife.

That small detail matters most for products eaten on the go, samples handed out at events and single servings opened in a kitchen or gym. It is also the reason most snack and sample brands now treat a tear notch as standard rather than an extra.

Accessibility is part of the picture as well. Older customers and people with limited grip strength often struggle with sealed film packaging, and a notch makes opening possible without scissors. For products such as supplements and single-serve sachets, where the buyer may open several a day, that ease of use can be the difference between a repeat customer and a one-off purchase. p2 Single-dose versions are covered on our printed sachets page.

Pouch Formats With Tear Notches

Tear notches can be added to most heat-sealed pouch styles. The format you choose depends on the volume, how the pouch is displayed and whether it needs to reseal. p0 Stand-up versions with a gusset are on our stand-up pouches page.

  • Three-side seal flat pouch: the classic sample sachet and single-serve format, lies flat in a mailer or box
  • Stand-up pouch: a gusseted base that lets the pouch stand on a shelf, good for snacks and coffee
  • Stand-up pouch with zip: tear notch to open, zip to reseal for multi-serve products
  • Flat bottom pouch: a box-like base for larger snack, coffee and pet treat packs
  • Pouches with a hang hole for peg display in shops

Films and Barriers for Custom Tear Notch Pouches

The film structure decides how well the contents keep. Products sensitive to air and moisture, such as coffee, crisps, nuts and supplements, need a high-barrier laminate, often with a metallised or foil layer. Dry goods with a short shelf life or quick turnover can use a lighter, clear film. A matt or kraft-paper outer layer gives a natural look while still carrying a barrier film inside.

Clear windows can be added to show the product, though a window does reduce the light barrier. For coffee and tea, a degassing valve can be fitted alongside the tear notch. Tell us what goes inside, how long it needs to keep and how you will seal the pouches, and we will suggest a suitable film. Food-contact grade inner layers are available on request for food pouches. p1 Full foil structures are described on our heat-seal mylar bags page.

Placing the Notch and the Seal

The notch sits in the side seal just below the top seal, so tearing across removes only the sealed strip at the top. On a zip pouch, the notch goes above the zip so the tear opens the pouch without damaging the zip. We can add a notch on both sides so left-handed and right-handed customers can open it easily.

If you heat-seal the pouches yourself after filling, leave enough headspace above the product for your sealer jaws. We supply pouches open at the top for filling, with the notch already cut in the side seals. Ask for a few spare pouches to test your sealer temperature before you fill the run.

Testing before a full fill is time well spent. Fill a handful of pouches with the actual product, seal them, leave them a day and then tear them open. Check that the tear runs cleanly above the product, that the seal held through handling, and that nothing escapes when the pouch is opened at an angle. If the tear runs close to the contents, ask us to move the notch a few millimetres higher on the next order. p2 The guide to measuring a product covers headspace for sealing.

Print and Branding

Pouches are printed edge to edge, front and back, in full colour. Small pouches have limited space, so prioritise the brand name, the product name and the flavour or variant, then use the back for ingredients, nutrition, allergens, weight and a batch or date area. A small printed arrow or line next to the notch shows customers where to tear, which helps on samples handed to people who have never seen your product before.

Matt finishes look calm and premium; gloss finishes make colours pop on a busy shelf. A spot gloss on a matt pouch highlights the logo or a product photo. For several flavours, keep the layout the same and change the colour and flavour name. p1 Matt and gloss films are compared in the guide to print and finish options.

Who Uses Tear Notch Pouches

Snack brands use them for crisps, popcorn, nuts, dried fruit and protein snacks. Coffee roasters use small pouches for single-brew samples and taster packs. Tea brands, supplement and sports nutrition companies, pet treat makers, spice and seasoning sellers, bath salt and cosmetics brands sending samples, and subscription boxes that include several small items all use them. Event and sampling teams like them because a pouch can be handed out, opened and eaten on the spot.

Subscription and sampling businesses value the flat format above all. A three-side seal pouch slips into a letterbox-sized mailer alongside other items, adds almost no weight and does not need its own box. That keeps postage low, which matters when you are sending a sample to someone who has not yet paid for anything.

Tear a Filled Sample Open at an Angle

A tear notch is judged by where the tear ends up, not where it starts. Fill a handful of pouches with the real product, seal them with your own sealer, leave them a day and tear each one open at an angle as a customer would; if the tear runs close to the contents or the seal lets go, the notch needs moving a few millimetres higher. Tell us the format, the product and how long it must keep.

Ask for notches on both sides so left and right-handed customers open it the same way, and say if a zip or a degassing valve goes in, because the notch sits above both. The custom quote arrives by email within one working day, from £0.25 for small sample pouches, with the minimum set per job.

The free proof shows the front, back, seal areas and the notch position; a printed arrow beside the notch helps first-time customers. Production takes 4 to 7 working days after approval and the flat pouches reach UK mainland addresses by free tracked delivery, open at the top for filling. Roasters usually pair these with tin-tie coffee bags for the counter for beans sold by the scoop.

Tear Notch Pouches Questions

What buyers ask before ordering tear notch pouches.

What does a tear notch actually do?

It gives the tear a starting point in the seal, so the film opens in a straight line across the pouch instead of stretching or splitting down the side. The contents stay in the bag.

Can I have a tear notch and a zip on the same pouch?

Yes. The notch sits above the zip, so customers tear off the top strip and then use the zip to reseal.

Can you put a notch on both sides?

Yes. Notches on both side seals let left and right-handed customers open the pouch easily.

Which film keeps snacks crisp?

A high-barrier laminate, often metallised or foil, keeps out air and moisture. We will suggest a film once we know the product and how long it needs to keep.

Do I seal the pouches myself?

Usually yes. We supply them open at the top with the notch already cut, and you heat-seal them after filling.

Can a tear notch pouch have a window?

Yes. A clear window is cut into the front panel below the notch, so the tear still runs cleanly across the top. A window lets in light, so for coffee and other light-sensitive products keep it small or leave it out.

Can coffee pouches have a valve and a tear notch?

Yes. A one-way degassing valve can be fitted alongside the notch and zip.

Can I print an arrow showing where to tear?

Yes. A small printed arrow or line by the notch helps people who have not opened your pouch before.

Do you make small runs for samples?

Yes. Minimums are low and quoted per job, which suits sample runs and trial flavours.

When can I start filling my printed pouches?

Once you approve the free proof, production takes 4 to 7 working days and free tracked UK mainland delivery takes 2 to 3 working days. Test your sealer on a few spares first.

What if the seals or notches are faulty?

Send photos within 10 days of delivery and we will reprint or refund the affected pouches. A short video of the tear helps us see the fault.
