Custom Heat Seal Mylar Bags

from £0.25 a bagPriced per job · low minimums

Heat seal mylar bags are closed by melting the inner layers together with an impulse sealer, which gives a tight, tamper-evident seal that a zip alone cannot match. We print them with your branding in flat, stand-up and gusseted styles for food and dry goods that need to stay fresh for a long time.

How a Heat Seal Protects the Contents

Mylar bags are laminated from several layers: a printable outer film, a metallised or foil barrier layer in the middle and a sealable inner layer. The barrier blocks light, oxygen and moisture, the three things that make dried food go stale, oily snacks turn rancid and coffee lose its aroma. But a barrier only works if the opening is closed just as well, and that is what the heat seal does.

When you press the open top of the bag in an impulse sealer, the jaws heat the inner layers until they fuse into a single strip. Once cool, the seal is as strong as the bag itself and can only be opened by cutting or tearing. That makes heat seal mylar bags the go-to choice for long shelf-life products such as dehydrated meals, dried fruit, grains, powders and preserved food stores.

The fused seal also shows clearly if a bag has been tampered with. A torn or re-sealed top is obvious, which reassures customers buying food or supplements from a shop or online. Our main range of printed custom mylar bags uses the same sealed top.

Styles: Flat, Stand-Up and Gusseted

Flat three-side seal bags are the simplest and cheapest. They lie flat, pack densely in a box and suit sachets, samples, single portions and items that will be stored rather than displayed. Stand-up pouches have a folded base gusset that opens out so the bag stands on a shelf, which is ideal for retail. Side gusset bags expand from the sides and suit coffee, loose tea and products sold by volume.

Any of these can combine a heat seal with a resealable zip below it. The customer tears the heat seal to open the bag the first time, then uses the zip to close it between uses.

Choosing Barrier Layers and Finishes

Metallised film gives a good barrier at a reasonable cost and has a silvery interior. Foil laminate gives the highest barrier and suits very sensitive products such as ground coffee and long-term food storage. If customers need to see the product, a clear front with a metallised or foil back is a compromise, though a clear panel does let in some light.

On the outside, matt film gives a modern, understated look and reduces glare under shop lights. Gloss film makes colours vivid. Soft-touch matt film feels velvety and is popular with premium snacks and supplements. Kraft paper outer layers laminated to a barrier film suit artisan foods, giving a natural look without losing protection.

Thickness matters for sharp or heavy contents. Nuts, granola and dried pasta can puncture thin film, so tell us what goes in and we will suggest a suitable gauge. For heavy or sharp products, heavy duty mylar bags use a thicker film.

Getting Your Heat Seal Mylar Bags Sealing Properly

Impulse sealers are simple to use but worth setting up carefully. Thicker barrier bags need a longer heat time than thin bags, so run a few test seals at different settings and check them by pulling gently on the sealed edge. A good seal is flat, even and wide, with no wrinkles or gaps. Wipe any powder or crumbs from the inside of the top before sealing, because debris in the seal area weakens it.

Leave enough empty space above the product for the sealer jaws, typically twenty to thirty millimetres. For bags with a zip, seal above the zip, not across it. Oxygen absorbers are often added to long-storage food bags before sealing to remove trapped air; ask us about bag sizes that leave room for one.

If you seal large volumes, a band sealer or a wider impulse sealer speeds things up. Our bags work with standard sealers used by small food producers. A pouch with a tear notch above the seal makes the first opening easier for customers.

Products That Suit a Heat-Sealed Bag

Dried and dehydrated food is the classic use, from camping meals and emergency food stores to dried mushrooms and fruit. Coffee roasters use heat seal bags with one-way valves to let gas out without letting air in. Snack brands use them for crisps, jerky, nuts and trail mix. Supplement and protein powder brands use them for sachets and refill pouches.

Pet food makers, bakers selling biscuits and brownies, and herbalists packing loose leaf tea all use them too. Food-contact grade films are available on request for any product that touches the inner layer directly.

Small producers selling at farmers markets often start with flat heat seal pouches and a simple printed label area, then move to fully printed stand-up bags once a product has proved popular. That route keeps early costs low. If you already know a line will be a steady seller, going straight to printed stand-up pouches saves you relabelling later and gives a more finished look on a shop shelf.

Long-storage food is a special case. Customers buying emergency or expedition food want reassurance that the bag will hold up for a long time in a cupboard, a car boot or a rucksack. A thicker foil laminate, a generous seal width and clear storage instructions on the back all help, and printing a simple fill and seal date panel lets you or the customer note when the bag was packed.

Print Design for Mylar Bags

We print the full surface of the bag, front and back, in full colour. Plan the top margin carefully: the heat seal area and any tear notch should be clear of important text, because they will be crimped or torn. Place the product name, weight and key claims in the upper middle of the front, where they show on a shelf. Nutrition, ingredients and storage advice go on the back.

Metallised film can show through unprinted areas with a silvery shine, which can look striking. If you want a solid white background instead, we print a white underlayer first. Our team checks seal zones and text sizes on your free proof. To show the product, our mylar bags with a clear window keep the same print options.

Heat Seal Mylar Bags Questions

What buyers ask before ordering heat seal mylar bags.

What sealer do I need for heat seal mylar bags?

A standard impulse sealer works for most bags. Thicker foil bags may need a longer heat setting, so test a few seals before packing.

How much space should I leave at the top for sealing?

Leave twenty to thirty millimetres of empty bag above the product so the sealer jaws can close cleanly. Bags with a zip need that space above the zip line.

Can a heat seal bag also have a zip?

Yes. The heat seal goes above the zip, so the bag is tamper-evident until first opened and resealable afterwards.

Why is my seal weak or wrinkled?

Usually the heat time is too short, or there is powder or crumbs in the seal area. Clean the inside of the top and adjust the sealer setting.

Foil or metallised film: which is better?

Foil gives the highest barrier for very sensitive products. Metallised film is lighter and cheaper and suits most snacks and dry goods.

Can I have a clear window?

Yes, but a clear panel lets in some light, so it suits products that are not light sensitive or will sell quickly. A metallised back panel keeps the rest of the bag fully protected.

Will sharp contents puncture the bag?

They can on thin film. Tell us the contents and we will suggest a thicker gauge for nuts, pasta or granola.

Can I add a degassing valve for coffee?

Yes. One-way valves let fresh coffee release gas without letting air in.

Are the bags suitable for direct food contact?

Food-contact grade films are available on request. Tell us what you are packing so we specify the right film.

Can different flavours print in one order?

Often, yes. We can print several designs in one run, which keeps costs down for small ranges.

Can I print new flavours later and keep the same bag size?

Yes. Keeping the size and film the same means new designs slot straight into your range. Each new print run takes 4–7 working days after proof approval, followed by free tracked delivery in 2–3 working days.
