Custom Mylar Bags with Window

from £0.25 a bagPriced per job · low minimums

Custom mylar bags with window panels give you the barrier of a foil-lined pouch with a clear view of what is inside. Shoppers can see the clusters in your granola, the colour of your dried mango or the size of your cashews before they buy, while the printed bag around the window does the branding.

Seeing Is Believing on a Snack Shelf

Snack buyers are cautious with brands they do not know. A fully printed pouch asks them to trust a photo; a window lets them judge the real product. For granola, trail mix, nuts, dried fruit, coffee beans, sweets and pet treats, that glimpse is often what turns a curious look into a sale.

The window also keeps your print honest. Instead of a staged photograph that might over-promise, the actual product sits in the middle of your design, framed by your brand colours, ingredients and claims. It is a good fit for brands whose product looks as good as it tastes.

Windows need not be big to work. A narrow strip down the front or a small shaped window, such as a leaf, a circle or a nut outline, shows enough of the contents while leaving plenty of printed space for the brand.

It also reassures buyers with allergies or dietary preferences, who like to check what they are getting.

Window Shapes and Where to Put Them

Window position changes how the bag looks once filled. Contents settle to the bottom, so a window placed low on the front will always show product, while one placed near the top may show empty space once a few portions have been eaten.

Common choices include: p1 Snack ranges that need a side window see examples on our mylar snack bags page.

  • A vertical strip down the centre or one side, which shows the product at every fill level
  • A rounded rectangle in the lower half of the front panel
  • A custom die-cut shape that echoes the product or logo
  • A side gusset window, which keeps the front fully printed while still showing the contents from the side
  • A clear bottom gusset on stand-up pouches for a view from below

Barrier Layers and Freshness

Mylar bags are built from several layers laminated together, typically a printed outer film, a metallised or foil barrier layer and a sealable inner layer. The barrier keeps out light, oxygen and moisture, which are what make nuts go rancid, dried fruit harden and granola lose its crunch.

A window means that part of the bag uses clear film instead of the metallised layer, so it lets in more light. For most snacks with a typical shelf life, that is not a problem, especially if the bag is stored out of strong sunlight. For very light-sensitive or long-life products, a smaller window or a side gusset window reduces exposure. Food-contact grade inner films are available on request; tell us what you are packing and how long it needs to last, and we will confirm the structure in the custom quote.

Freshness also depends on filling. Let roasted nuts and freshly baked granola cool completely before bagging, as trapped warmth turns into condensation inside the pouch and can soften the product within days, however good the barrier. p2 Fully foil-backed versions for light-sensitive goods are on our custom mylar bags page.

Choosing Mylar Bags with Window Styles and Sizes

Stand-up pouches with a bottom gusset are the most popular, because they stand on a shelf like a box and show the window front-on. Flat pouches suit smaller portions, samples and hanging displays. Side gusset bags are taller and narrower, a classic shape for coffee and loose tea.

Size depends on product density as well as weight. A 250 g bag of nuts needs a smaller pouch than 250 g of puffed granola or crisps. Send us your fill weight and product, or better still, fill any plain pouch of a similar size and see where the product settles. Leave space above the product for the zip and the heat seal, usually 30 to 40 mm.

Kraft-faced pouches with a window are a popular middle ground for artisan brands. The paper outer gives a hand-made look, the barrier liner inside does the protective work, and the window keeps the product on show. Colours print a little softer on kraft, so choose strong, simple artwork.

Zips, Tear Notches and Hang Holes

Resealable zips are almost expected on snack pouches now, as customers rarely finish a bag in one go. A tear notch above the zip lets people open the sealed bag cleanly without scissors. Hang holes, round or euro-slot, let you merchandise pouches on pegs in delis, garden centres and gift shops.

If you fill and seal by hand, an impulse heat sealer is all you need to close the top of the bag above the zip. Tell us your sealer's jaw width and we keep the seal area free of heavy ink so the bond is strong.

Rounded corners are a small extra worth considering. They stop sharp pouch corners scratching neighbouring bags in a box or display, and they feel nicer in the hand. p2 Zip and notch options are explained on our zipper bags page.

Designing Around a Clear Panel

A window works like a picture frame, so design outwards from it. Keep the logo and product name close to the window so the eye reads brand and product together. Avoid placing important text right at the window edge, where it can look cut off once the product shifts. Matt finishes around a glossy clear window create a pleasing contrast that photographs well.

Make sure the back panel carries ingredients, allergens, net weight and a space for best-before and batch codes. If you sell several flavours, a shared layout with a colour change and a different flavour name keeps your range tidy, and the window tells customers the difference at a glance.

Picture the filled bag against your proof before you sign it off. Real product changes the look of a design, and a granola with dark chocolate chunks reads very differently through a window than a pale oat mix. p2 Cookie makers can see a worked layout on our cookie mylar bags page.

Hold Your Filled Bag Against the Proof Before Approving

A window shows the product, so the product has to be part of the sign-off. When the free proof arrives, print it at full size, fill one of your current bags and hold the two together: a dark granola behind the window reads very differently from a pale oat mix, and a window placed high shows air once three portions are gone. Move the window lower or to a vertical strip if that is what you see.

Before that, send the bag style, the fill weight and how long the product must keep, since a long shelf life argues for a smaller window. Tell us your sealer's jaw width so the seal area stays free of heavy ink. The custom quote arrives by email within one working day, from £0.25 a pouch, with the minimum set per job so a small-batch snack maker can start sensibly.

Production takes 4 to 7 working days after approval and the flat pouches reach UK mainland addresses by free tracked delivery. Makers who also sell a fully metallised line for coffee usually add coffee bags with a degassing valve in the same artwork.

Mylar Bags with Window Questions

What buyers ask before ordering mylar bags with window.

Does a window shorten shelf life?

It lets in more light than a fully metallised bag. For most snacks this is fine, but very light-sensitive products are better with a smaller or side window.

Where should the window go on the bag?

Lower on the front panel or as a vertical strip, so product is always visible even as the bag empties. Windows near the top can show empty space.

Can the window on a snack pouch follow the shape of my logo?

Yes. Circles, leaves, a product outline or a logo shape can all be cut, as long as the shape keeps a margin from the seals. The proof shows the exact window outline on your artwork so you can judge it against a filled bag.

Can I seal the bags myself?

Yes, with an impulse heat sealer above the zip. Tell us the jaw width and we keep the seal area clear of heavy ink.

How do I choose a size for my granola?

Density matters as much as weight. Fill any plain pouch of a similar size to check, and allow 30 to 40 mm above the product for the zip and seal.

Are the inner films suitable for food contact?

Food-contact grade inner films are available on request. Tell us the product and expected shelf life and we confirm the structure.

Can I hang the bags on display pegs?

Yes. Add a round or euro hang hole at the top for peg displays in delis and gift shops.

Matt or gloss around the window?

Matt around a clear window gives a strong contrast that looks premium and photographs well. Gloss gives a brighter, punchier shelf look.

Can coffee bags have a window and a valve?

Yes. Side gusset bags can carry a degassing valve and a slim window, though coffee is light-sensitive, so keep the window modest.

Can I print several flavours together?

Yes. A shared layout with a flavour colour and name is usually printed together, each in its own quantity.

Where do best-before dates go?

We leave a clear panel on the back or base for printing or labelling dates and batch codes. Keep it unvarnished if you stamp by hand.
