Why Snacks Need a Barrier Bag

Crisps go stale, nuts turn rancid and dried fruit dries out further when air, moisture and light reach them. Mylar bags are made from layers of film that include a metallised or foil layer, which blocks those three enemies far better than a single plastic or paper layer. The result is a snack that tastes as fresh when opened as when it was packed.

Barrier bags also protect against smells. Spiced nuts, smoked snacks and cheese-flavoured crisps can taint other products if they leak aroma, and a good barrier keeps flavours sealed in. For brands selling through shops, that matters when snacks sit next to each other for weeks.

For small producers, mylar bags make shelf life much more predictable. Combined with heat sealing and, where needed, oxygen absorbers or nitrogen flushing, they give a product the best chance of tasting right up to its best-before date. Paper-fronted bags for the same snacks are covered on our printed snack bags in other materials page.

Bag Styles for Custom Mylar Snack Bags

Stand-up pouches have a gusseted base that opens out so the bag stands on a shelf. They are the most popular style for nuts, trail mix, dried fruit and premium crisps. Flat pouches are simpler and lower cost, ideal for single servings, samples and snacks sold on pegs or in multipacks.

Pillow bags are the traditional crisp packet shape, sealed at top and bottom with a back seam. They can be filled with air or nitrogen to cushion fragile snacks. Side-gusseted bags hold larger volumes and suit sharing packs.

Each style can have a resealable zip, a tear notch for easy opening, a hang hole for peg display and a clear window so customers can see the product.

Choosing Size and Fill

Snack bag sizes are usually chosen by weight, but the volume of the product matters more. A 100 g bag of puffed snacks takes far more space than 100 g of almonds. The best approach is to fill a sample bag with your actual product, seal it and check how it looks and stands.

Leave headspace above the product for the seal and, for stand-up pouches, for the zip. Too little and the bag is hard to seal and close; too much and it looks underfilled on the shelf, which customers notice.

If you sell the same snack in several weights, keep the artwork consistent and change the size and weight panel. It builds a recognisable range.

Fragile snacks such as crisps, rice cakes and puffed corn need a different approach from dense ones. They break if they are packed tightly, so they go into a bag with room to move and, ideally, a cushion of air or nitrogen. Nuts and dried fruit can be packed more firmly, which keeps the bag compact and stops it slumping on the shelf.

Think about how customers eat the snack, too. A lunchbox portion should be small enough to finish in one sitting, while a sharing bag needs a zip and a wide opening so hands can reach in easily. Our guide to measuring products for packaging covers fill height for pouches.

Printing and Finishes

Mylar bags are printed in full colour, so photographs of your snack, illustrations and detailed patterns all reproduce well. Matt finishes look premium and modern; gloss makes colours vivid. A combination of matt and spot gloss highlights a logo or product image.

Clear windows show the actual product, which builds trust for nuts and dried fruit. For crisps and light-sensitive snacks, an opaque bag without a window protects freshness better.

Food-contact grade laminates are available on request. The inside layer that touches the snack is chosen for compatibility with dry and oily foods.

Colour has a big job on a snack shelf. Many brands use a different colour for each flavour while keeping the logo and layout constant, so a regular customer can find their favourite in seconds. Strong, saturated colours print well on mylar, and a white ink underlay keeps them bright on metallised film.

Matt bags photograph better for online listings because they do not reflect studio lights, which is worth considering if most of your sales happen through a website. The guide comparing matt, gloss and spot finishes shows each on metallised film.

What Goes on a Snack Bag

The front needs your brand, the product name, the flavour and the weight. The back carries ingredients with allergens highlighted, nutrition information, storage advice, your business details and a barcode. Leave space for a best-before date and batch code, either printed into a clear panel or applied with a sticker or inkjet.

We print what you supply, and checking legal wording is your responsibility. Nuts and seeds in particular need clear allergen labelling.

Use the space wisely. A short line about where the nuts are roasted or how the fruit is dried gives your bag personality, while serving suggestions such as sprinkling on porridge or adding to salads help customers find more ways to use the product. Upload the artwork through the free proof request and we will place the allergen panel clear of the seals.

Who Buys Printed Snack Pouches

Snack start-ups, nut roasters, dried fruit sellers, popcorn makers, farm shops, health food brands and gift companies are our main customers. Gyms and cafés order own-brand protein snack bags, and corporate teams order printed bags for event giveaways.

Online sellers like stand-up pouches with zips because they post well, stay closed and look good in product photos.

Market traders who roast nuts or make flavoured popcorn on the spot often move from plain bags with stickers to printed pouches once they find a best-seller. The printed bag makes the product suitable for shops and gift hampers, which opens new places to sell.

Hotels and holiday lets also order small branded snack pouches as welcome treats, where a printed bag looks far more generous than a plain one.

Fill a Sample With the Puffiest Snack You Sell

Snack bags are sized by volume, not weight, and the product that catches people out is the light one: 100 g of puffed corn needs far more bag than 100 g of almonds. Fill a plain sample with your bulkiest product to the weight you sell, seal it, and check it stands and leaves room for the zip. Say which snacks are fragile, because crisps want air or nitrogen in the bag rather than a tight pack, and which are light-sensitive, because those lose the window.

Keep one layout and change the colour per flavour, with a clear panel for the best-before code. Send the style, size, finish, features and quantity per flavour, and a custom quote comes back by email within one working day, with small pouches from £0.25 and minimums set per job. The free proof shows each flavour on the bag. Production takes 4–7 working days after approval and tracked delivery to UK mainland addresses is free, taking 2–3 working days. Misprinted or damaged pouches reported within 10 days are reprinted or refunded. Biscuits from the same kitchen use the wider format on our cookie mylar bags page.

Mylar Snack Bags Questions

What buyers ask before ordering mylar snack bags.

Will mylar bags keep crisps crunchy?

Yes, the barrier layers block air and moisture, which are the main causes of staleness. Heat sealing and nitrogen flushing add further protection.

Should my nut bags have a window?

A window shows the product and builds trust. For light-sensitive or oily snacks, an opaque bag protects freshness better.

Which style stands up on a shelf?

Stand-up pouches have a gusseted base that opens out so the bag stands upright. Fill them firmly enough that the base spreads, or they lean.

Can customers reseal the bag?

Yes, add a resealable zip so the snack stays fresh after opening. Leave headspace above the product for it.

How do I choose the right bag size for 100 g of snacks?

Fill a sample bag with your actual product. Volume varies hugely, so 100 g of puffed snacks needs a much bigger bag than 100 g of nuts.

Does a bag for roasted nuts need a different inner layer from one for dried fruit?

The oily nut needs an inner layer chosen for fatty foods, while dried fruit is fine on the standard dry-food layer, and both are food-contact grade laminates available on request. Tell us the snack and we specify the layer. A window suits the fruit more than the nuts, which keep better in the dark.

Can you print a clear panel for best-before dates?

Yes, a clear or white panel makes it easy to add dates and batch codes with a sticker or inkjet. We keep it on the back, away from the seals.

Can snack bags hang on a peg?

Yes, add a hang hole at the top so bags can hang on a peg display. A euro slot suits mixed peg sizes in convenience shops.

Can I order several flavours at once?

Yes, each flavour gets its own artwork and proof, and you can keep the layout consistent across the range. Each flavour is quoted in its own quantity within one order.

What do printed snack pouches cost?

Small printed pouches start from £0.25 each depending on size and finish. A custom quote for your bag size and features comes back by email within one working day.
