Why Seeds Need a Better Packet, and Who Uses One

Seeds are alive, and the conditions they are stored in affect how well they germinate when sown. Damp, heat, light and air all play a part. A traditional paper seed packet is fine for seeds that will be sown within a short time, but it does little to keep moisture out if packets sit in a damp shed or a humid shop.

Mylar bags are made from a laminated film with a metallised or foil layer, which forms a barrier to moisture, light and oxygen. Once heat-sealed, they help keep seeds in a stable, dry environment. That makes them popular with seed companies selling stored stock, seed banks and savers keeping seeds from one sowing to the next, and growers buying seed in bulk.

We cannot promise any particular germination result, as that depends on the seed and how it is stored, but a good barrier bag gives seeds a far better chance than an open paper envelope.

Seed companies and specialist growers order printed seed bags for retail and mail-order sales. Heritage and rare seed suppliers use them to protect valuable stock. Seed libraries and community gardens use them for swaps and storage, and allotment societies order them for members.

Garden centres and nurseries order own-label seed packets, and gift companies use small seed bags in garden-themed hampers and wedding favours, often with a personalised message on the front. Gift companies that want a paper look with the same barrier use the kraft-lined mylar bags for hampers.

Bag Styles for Seed Packing

Seed quantities range from a pinch of tiny flower seeds to kilos of grass or grain, so we make several styles.

Small flat pouches are the most common for retail seed packets, while stand-up zip pouches suit bulk seed and larger varieties.

  • Flat three-side seal pouch: a simple pouch, heat-sealed after filling, ideal for retail seed packets.
  • Flat pouch with zip: resealable after opening, useful for seeds sown in several batches.
  • Stand-up pouch: a gusseted base lets the bag stand on a shelf, for bulk seed and larger varieties.
  • Window pouch: a clear panel shows the seed, popular for beans, peas and unusual varieties.
  • Mini sachet: tiny pouches for samples, gifts and seed swaps.
  • Kraft-lined mylar: a paper-look outside with a barrier lining for a natural feel.

Seals, Zips and Tear Notches

The seal is where moisture gets in, so it matters as much as the film. A heat seal across the top after filling closes the bag fully. Above the heat seal, a resealable zip lets customers close the bag again after the first opening, and a tear notch makes it easy to open the heat seal neatly without scissors.

For long-term storage, many seed savers add a small desiccant sachet before sealing to absorb any remaining moisture. If you plan to do the same, allow a little extra space in the bag.

A hang hole at the top lets seed bags hang on peg displays in garden centres and hardware shops.

Place the tear notch just above the heat seal and below the zip, so the bag opens cleanly and still reseals afterwards. Plain heat-sealed versions without a zip are covered under heat-seal mylar bags for single use.

Printing Mylar Seed Bags With Variety Details

Seed packets are as much about information as branding. Gardeners want to know the variety, a picture of the plant, when to sow, how deep, how far apart and when to expect a harvest or flowers. The front usually carries the variety name and an image; the back carries the growing guide.

Full colour printing reproduces photographs and illustrations well on mylar. A matt finish reduces glare and gives a softer, natural look; gloss makes colours vivid. Kraft-lined bags print best with bold colours and simple illustrations.

If you sell many varieties, a consistent layout with a changing photograph and name keeps the range recognisable. We can print several designs in one order, and leave a blank area for lot numbers or packing dates if they change.

Filling and Sealing Seed Bags at Home or in the Shed

Most small seed businesses pack by hand, and a few habits make a big difference to how well the bags perform. Make sure seeds are properly dry before packing; sealing damp seed into a barrier bag traps the moisture inside rather than keeping it out. Pack on a dry day, or in a room away from kettles and washing, and work in small batches so open bags are not left sitting about.

A small funnel or a folded card scoop keeps seed out of the seal area. Even a few grains caught in the seal can stop it closing fully, so wipe the inside of the top edge before sealing. A simple impulse heat sealer, the kind used for food bags, closes mylar pouches cleanly; test the temperature on an empty bag first, as too much heat can wrinkle the film.

Label each bag as you go, or print the lot number area before packing, so varieties cannot get mixed up. Store finished bags in a cool, dark box until they are sold or posted. If you sell at markets, a small display box keeps the packets upright and out of direct sun on the stall. The simplest flat version for samples is covered on the flat mylar bags for seed samples page.

Choosing a Bag Size

Measure the volume of seed per packet rather than its weight, because seed sizes vary so much. A few grams of tiny flower seed fits a small pouch, while the same weight of beans needs far more space. Fill a sample bag or a measuring cup with your seed quantity and allow room above it for sealing and a zip.

Think about how the bag will be displayed too. Small flat pouches suit seed racks and envelopes for posting; stand-up pouches suit shop shelves and bulk sales. If you post seeds, a flat pouch keeps postage low.

Mixed collections, such as a salad selection or a cutting garden set, can go in a larger pouch with several small sachets inside, each printed with its own variety name.

Dry the Seed Fully Before Choosing a Zip

A foil bag only helps seed that goes in dry. Seed sealed with residual moisture sweats inside the barrier and does worse than it would in a paper packet, so check your drying before you choose the bag, and if customers will open and reclose the packet across a sowing season, specify a zip above the heat seal. For seed sold once and sown at once, a plain heat-sealed pouch with a tear notch is cheaper. Weigh the fill per variety and tell us how many varieties, as each is a print version.

Send the bag style, the size, the quantity and your designs, and a custom quote comes by email within one working day, with minimums low and quoted per job and plain pouches from £0.25 each. Printed orders come with a free design proof. Bags are produced in 4 to 7 working days after approval and delivered free and tracked to UK mainland addresses in 2 to 3 working days; bags with split seals, misprints or other damage are reprinted or refunded if reported within 10 days. Varieties that sell on the look of the seed use the mylar bags with a clear window.

Mylar Seed Bags Questions

What buyers ask before ordering mylar seed bags.

Do mylar bags keep seeds viable for longer?

Mylar helps keep moisture, light and air away from seeds, which supports good storage. Germination still depends on the seed and storage conditions, so results will vary.

Should I add a desiccant sachet?

Many seed savers do for long-term storage. Allow a little extra space in the bag if you plan to add one.

Can a gardener reseal a seed packet between sowings?

Yes, when the bag has a zip fitted above the heat seal. The customer tears the notch, sows a few seeds and presses the zip shut, which keeps the rest dry across a season of successional sowing.

Can I see the seeds through the bag?

A window pouch has a clear panel that shows the seeds, which suits beans, peas and unusual varieties.

Can I print a sowing guide on the back?

Yes. The back panel has room for sowing times, depth, spacing and harvest guidance in a readable type size, and a month-by-month strip along the bottom is a popular layout. The proof shows the text at actual size.

Can I order different varieties in one order?

Yes, we can print several designs in one run, keeping one layout with a changing name and image.

What size bag do I need for flower seeds?

A small packet of around 90 x 130 mm suits most flower seeds. Measure by volume rather than weight.

Can seed bags hang on a display?

Yes, a hang hole at the top lets bags hang on peg displays in garden centres.

Do you offer a paper-look seed bag?

Yes, kraft-lined mylar has a paper outside with a barrier lining inside.

Can I leave space for lot numbers?

Yes, we can leave a blank area for lot numbers or packing dates to be stamped or labelled.

What if a batch of seed bags arrives with weak side seals?

Test a few bags from each carton by pressing the seals before you start filling. Report any faults or misprints within 10 days with photos and the affected bags are reprinted or refunded.
