Custom Clamshell Perfume Boxes

from £0.25 a boxPriced per job · low minimums

Clamshell perfume boxes are made in one piece, with a lid hinged to the base so the box opens like a shell and the bottle is revealed in its fitted cradle. We build them to the exact shape of your bottle, cap and any extras you want to sit alongside it.

Why a Hinged Shell Suits Fragrance

A fragrance is bought for the moment the box opens as much as for the scent itself. A clamshell gives that moment a little ceremony: the lid lifts back on its spine, stays attached, and frames the bottle in a padded bed, which a lift-off lid and base perfume box cannot quite do. Because lid and base are joined, nothing gets mislaid at the counter or under the wrapping paper, and the box can be closed again neatly for storage on a dressing table.

The one-piece build is also practical. A two-part box with a separate lid can slide off in transit if the fit is loose, while a hinged clamshell is held shut by a magnet, a ribbon or a simple tuck. It is easier for shop staff to demonstrate, too, because they can open it, spray a tester and close it without fumbling with two pieces.

Clamshells work especially well for gift sets. A perfume bottle, a matching body lotion and a travel atomiser can sit side by side in a shaped insert, which makes the set feel complete and stops the smaller items rattling around.

Construction Options for Clamshell Perfume Boxes

Most of our clamshell perfume boxes are made from rigid greyboard wrapped in printed or coloured paper. The board gives the walls a solid feel that a folding carton cannot match, and the wrap paper carries your artwork, the same build as our hinged lid rigid boxes for other products. For lighter, lower-cost runs we also make clamshells from thick folding board with a scored hinge, which suits sample sets and travel sizes.

The closure changes the character of the box. A hidden magnet under the front flap gives a soft click that customers associate with premium goods. A ribbon pull adds a hand-tied look. A plain friction fit keeps cost down and still closes firmly if the board is cut accurately.

  • Rigid wrapped greyboard with a fabric or paper hinge
  • Folding board clamshells for samples and travel sizes
  • Magnetic front closure for a clean, flush finish
  • Ribbon tie or ribbon pull tab
  • Book-style clamshell with a wider spine for sets

Inserts That Hold the Bottle Still

Glass bottles are heavy for their size, and a thick base and a weighty cap make them want to tip. The insert is what keeps them safe, whether cut from foam, wrapped card or the moulded pulp tray some brands prefer. We cut foam, card or moulded pulp inserts to the outline of your bottle, so the base sits in a recess and the cap rests in its own cut-out. A ribbon lift under the bottle helps customers take it out without gripping the atomiser.

For accurate inserts we need a sample bottle, or at least the full dimensions including the cap and any decorative collar. Unusual shapes such as faceted glass or offset caps are fine, but they need a precise cut, so a physical sample saves time. Velvet-flocked foam or satin-lined card gives the inside a softer look than plain foam.

Finishes for the Outside and the Inside

Perfume buyers notice the feel of a box before they read it. Soft-touch lamination gives a velvety surface that suits dark, moody colours; our print and finish options compared page shows the alternatives side by side. Gloss lamination makes bright colours pop and resists finger marks on display. Foil blocking in gold, silver, rose gold or a coloured foil picks out the brand name, and embossing or debossing adds depth you can feel with a fingertip.

Do not forget the inside of the lid. Because a clamshell opens towards the customer, the underside of the lid is the first thing they see. A printed message, a fragrance description or a simple pattern there costs little extra and makes the reveal more memorable. Spot UV over a matt background is another way to add contrast without adding colour.

Planning Artwork Across the Hinge

A clamshell is a continuous wrap, so artwork runs from the front flap, over the lid, down the spine and onto the back without a break. That gives you room for a sweeping pattern or a single image that stretches across the whole box, which is hard to do on a box with a separate lid; the same continuous wrap suits a perfume gift box holding a candle alongside the scent. It also means the design has to line up at the hinge, where the board flexes. We keep critical text and logos away from the fold so they never crease.

Think about how the box will be seen in a shop. On a shelf, customers usually see the front face and one side; in a display case they may see the top. Place the brand name where it will be visible when the box is closed, and keep the scent name and size on the base or back panel where they can be read without opening it.

Colour matching matters with fragrance because the box often echoes the liquid or the glass. If you have a Pantone reference for your bottle, send it with your artwork and we will print to it rather than guessing from a screen.

Sizing the Box Around Your Bottle

Start with the bottle at its tallest point, including the cap, then add space for the insert walls and the lid thickness. A rigid box normally needs a few millimetres around the bottle on every side for the insert to grip properly, and our guide to measuring a product explains how to allow for a flared cap. If the set includes a lotion or a sample vial, lay the items out on paper the way you want them presented and measure the footprint.

Upright clamshells, where the lid hinges at the back, suit single tall bottles. Flat clamshells that open like a book suit gift sets with two or three items lying down. We draw a dieline for your approval so you can see exactly how the bottle will sit before the board is cut.

Post Us the Bottle Before We Cut the First Insert

Perfume bottles are the one product where a drawing is rarely enough. A faceted shoulder, an offset neck or a heavy cap changes where the insert has to grip, and a cavity cut a millimetre loose lets a glass bottle rattle. So send a bottle, filled with water to the retail weight, before the insert is drawn; a sample reaches us in a day and saves a round of proofs. Choose the closure at the same time: a hidden magnet for a clean front, a ribbon tie for a softer gift look. Then settle the finish, since soft-touch wrap and foil are priced into the quote.

With the bottle, the number of items in the set and the finish you like, a custom quote comes by email within one working day, minimums quoted per job so a single scent launch is fine. The free design proof shows the artwork running across the hinge on the dieline. Production takes 4 to 7 working days once approved and free tracked delivery reaches UK mainland addresses in 2 to 3 working days. Houses that send press samples often add a smaller clamshell for 10 ml sample vials to the same run.

Clamshell Perfume Boxes Questions

What buyers ask before ordering clamshell perfume boxes.

What is the difference between a clamshell and a lid-and-base perfume box?

A clamshell is one piece, with the lid joined to the base along a hinge. A lid-and-base box has two separate parts. Clamshells keep everything together and open in a single motion, which makes the unboxing feel smoother.

Can the insert fit an unusually shaped bottle?

Yes. Faceted, curved or offset bottles are cut to their exact outline. Sending a physical sample is the most reliable way to get a snug fit.

Which closure feels most premium?

A hidden magnetic closure is the usual choice for high-end fragrance because it shuts with a soft click and leaves the front clean. Ribbon ties suit a softer, gift-wrapped look.

Can I print on the inside of the lid?

Yes. The inside lid faces the customer when the box opens, so it is a good place for a short message, a note about the scent or a repeat pattern.

Will the box protect a glass bottle in the post?

A rigid clamshell with a fitted insert holds the bottle firmly, but for courier delivery we recommend a plain outer shipping carton as well. We can quote one sized to fit.

Can a clamshell hold a perfume and a lotion together?

Yes. A book-style clamshell with a two-cavity insert holds both side by side. Give us the dimensions of each item and we will lay them out on the dieline.

Are folding board clamshells strong enough for retail?

For lighter items such as travel sprays and sample sets, heavy folding board works well and costs less. Full-size glass bottles are better in rigid board.

How do I get the size right?

Measure the bottle with its cap on, then allow room for the insert walls. We will draw a dieline for you to check before production, so the fit is confirmed before cutting.

What foil colours can you use?

Gold, silver, rose gold, copper, black and a range of coloured foils. Foil works best on bold type and simple marks rather than very fine detail.

Can clamshells be ready in time for a fragrance launch event?

Usually, if you plan around the proof. Inserts for unusual bottles can need an extra round of checking, so send a sample early. Once the proof is approved, production takes 4–7 working days and delivery to UK mainland addresses takes 2–3 working days.

Can I order 150 clamshells for a limited edition scent?

Yes. Minimums are low and quoted per job, so a limited release or a press kit run of that size is normal. The insert and wrap are set up once, so a reorder later uses the same dieline.
