From Kitchen Table Maker to Stockist
Most candle businesses start small. A few jars poured at home, sold at a craft fair, then an online shop and eventually a stockist or two. Packaging tends to follow the same path, from a sticker on a jar to a printed box that lets the candle sit alongside established brands. The right moment to move to custom boxes is usually when a shop asks for them, or when you notice jars getting chipped in the post.
Whatever your size, the box has the same jobs: protect the glass, keep dust off the wax, show the scent clearly and make the candle feel worth its price. A box also gives you space to tell people about burn time, the wick and how to get the best from the candle, which a small jar label cannot hold.
A box also changes where you can sell. Many gift shops and department store buyers will only take candles that are boxed, because unboxed jars collect dust on the shelf and are easily chipped by browsing hands. Having a proper box ready when a buyer asks can be the difference between a polite no and a first order. Makers supplying shops often step up to branded candle boxes for stockists once the range settles.
Tuck End or Two-Piece?
Tuck end cartons are the everyday choice. They fold from a single sheet, arrive flat, assemble in seconds and print on every face. They suit jar and tin candles sold in shops and online, and they are the most economical way to box a whole range.
Two-piece boxes have a separate lid and base. Made from rigid board wrapped in printed paper, they feel weighty and are often kept long after the candle is gone. They suit luxury candles, large multi-wick jars and gift sets where the box is part of the present.
Many makers use both, with tuck end boxes for the core range and a two-piece box for a signature scent or a larger size.
Sleeve and tray boxes sit between the two. A printed sleeve slides over a plain tray, giving a reveal similar to a drawer, and the sleeve can be changed for each scent while the trays stay the same. It is a tidy solution for makers with many scents in one vessel size.

Sizing Around Jars, Tins and Pillars
Measure the vessel at its widest point and its full height including any lid. Wooden and metal lids often add more height than expected. For glass jars, add 2 to 3 mm on each side so the jar slides in easily but does not rock.
Pillar candles have no vessel, so the wax surface needs protecting. A snug box with a card insert or a tissue wrap stops the sides being scuffed and the top being marked. For tapered dinner candles, a long narrow box with a divider keeps pairs apart. Our guide on how to measure a jar with its lid explains why wooden lids need extra height.
- Measure diameter and height with the lid on
- Allow a little extra width for jars with a curved shoulder
- Check the weight of large multi-wick jars before choosing board
- Group vessels of similar size to share one box size
Inserts, Windows and Protection in Transit
Glass candles posted on their own are vulnerable. A die-cut card insert that grips the jar keeps it centred and away from the walls. For online orders, the printed candle box inside a corrugated mailer with a fitted insert gives the best protection without needing loose fill.
Windows let shoppers see the colour of the wax or a decorated jar. A round window on the front works well for jar candles, while a long window suits pillars. Keep windows away from folds so the box keeps its strength.
Heat is worth remembering in summer. A candle box left in a hot van or a sunny window can soften the wax enough to mark it against the insert, so choose inserts that hold the vessel rather than the wax, and keep stock somewhere cool while it waits to be posted.
Printing Custom Candle Boxes With Scent Details
A candle box needs to communicate scent quickly. The front usually shows your brand and the scent name; a side panel lists the fragrance notes and burn time; the base carries your contact details and any safety or warning information you are required to show. We print the text you supply exactly, so check fragrance supplier guidance for the wording on your product.
If you make many scents, printing a separate box for each can be costly. A common approach is one printed design for the whole range with a blank area or band for a scent sticker. Another is a colour-coded set of boxes where each scent family has its own shade.
Think about the order in which people read. Most shoppers look at the scent name first, then the notes, then the brand. Giving the scent name the biggest type on the front, with the notes underneath in smaller type, matches how candles are actually chosen in a shop. Keep box print to the brand and let candle labels on the vessel carry the batch and burn details.
Finishes That Suit Candles
Candle buyers pick up boxes, turn them over and often sniff them, so the surface matters. Soft-touch lamination feels luxurious in the hand. Matt lamination keeps a quiet, refined look. Foil blocking on the scent name or logo adds a little glow that echoes candlelight, and embossing gives a texture people enjoy touching.
Kraft board printed in a single colour suits natural and botanical brands. It hides marks well and looks at home in gift shops and farm shops.
A small foil detail across a whole range can tie different scent colours together. The colours change from box to box, but the foil logo in the same place on every lid tells the shopper that these candles all belong to one maker. You can see soft-touch and foil finishes compared in our finish guide.
Send Every Scent Name in One List, With the Safety Text
Candle box orders slow down when scent names, notes and warning text arrive one email at a time. Put the full list in a single document: each scent name, its short description, the wax weight and burn time, and the safety wording your fragrance supplier gave you. Add the vessel measurements with the lid on and tell us whether jars travel by post, because a posted jar needs a candle box with a fitted insert where a shop jar does not. If you expect to add scents later, say so and we will set up the artwork so a new box slots in without a redesign.
With that list, your quantities and artwork, we email a custom quote within one working day and prepare a free proof showing every panel of every scent. Production takes 4 to 7 working days after approval, boxes arrive flat by tracked courier to UK mainland addresses, and crushed or misprinted boxes reported within 10 days are reprinted or refunded.

Candle Boxes Questions
What buyers ask before ordering candle boxes.
What size box do I need for my candle jar?
Measure the jar's widest diameter and its height with the lid on, then add 2 to 3 mm each side. We set the box around those measurements and show the fit on the free design proof.
Should I choose a tuck end or a two-piece box?
Tuck end boxes are economical, arrive flat and suit everyday ranges. Two-piece rigid boxes feel premium and are often kept, which suits signature scents and gifts. Many makers use both.
Can one box design work for all my scents?
Yes. Print one design for the range and add a scent sticker to each box, or use a colour-coded design per scent family. Both approaches keep costs manageable as the range grows.
Do candle boxes need inserts?
For glass jars sent by post, an insert is a good idea because it holds the jar centred and stops it knocking the walls. For shop display, a snug box without an insert is often enough.
Can you print safety information on the box?
Yes, we print the safety and warning text you supply. Check your fragrance supplier's guidance for the exact wording your product requires before approving the proof.
Will a window weaken the box?
A well-placed window keeps clear of folds and corners, so the box stays strong. Round windows on the front panel are popular for jar candles.
How do I protect pillar candles in a box?
A snug box with a tissue wrap or a card collar stops the wax surface being scuffed. Avoid boxes much larger than the candle, as movement marks soft wax.
Which finish suits a premium soy candle box?
Soft-touch lamination with a foil-blocked logo is the usual choice for premium candles, because the velvety surface matches the feel of the product. Embossing the logo or a blind-debossed pattern adds depth without extra ink.
Can I add a new scent box later?
Yes, a new scent can be added to an existing design and ordered on its own. Minimums are quoted per job, so small additions are practical.
Can I launch a new scent without waiting weeks for boxes?
Yes. Once the scent name and notes are on an approved proof, production takes 4 to 7 working days and free tracked UK mainland delivery usually takes 2 to 3 working days. Adding a scent to an existing design is the quickest route.
What if candle boxes arrive crushed just before a stockist order?
Report the damage or any misprint within 10 days of delivery with photos, and we reprint or refund the affected boxes. Keep a few spare boxes from each run so one damaged bundle does not hold up a delivery.
