Let the Candle Sell Itself

In a gift shop or boutique, candles compete on looks long before anyone smells them. A shopper scanning a shelf sees colour first, then the vessel, then the label. A closed box hides all three and relies entirely on the printed artwork to make the sale. A window changes that: the real candle shows through, the glass catches the light and the customer can see exactly what they are buying.

Windows also reduce the number of boxes opened in store. Shoppers who can see the candle are less likely to pull it out to check, which keeps stock tidy and stops lids being left loose.

Windows suit candles with something visual to show: layered colours, dried flowers pressed into the wax surface, a hand-poured texture, a striking vessel or a beautifully designed label. If your candle is a plain white wax in a plain jar, a closed box with strong artwork may sell it better, so think about what the window will actually reveal before you commit to one. Makers who want a plain carton without a cut-out use our retail candle boxes without a window.

Window Shapes and Placement

The window is the most important design decision on this box, and there is more choice than a simple rectangle.

Placement matters as much as shape. A window set too high shows the lid and not the wax; one set too low shows only the base of the jar. Line it up with the label and the top third of the wax, which is usually where the colour is richest and where the eye naturally falls on a shelf. Boxes that ship flat and fold up with the window already fitted are on our foldable window boxes page.

  • Front rectangle: the classic window, showing the label and most of the vessel
  • Arched window: a softer shape that suits elegant and vintage-style brands
  • Circle or oval: frames a round jar or a printed label beautifully
  • Shaped cut-out: a leaf, flame, star or your logo outline, used as a design feature
  • Top window: shows the wax surface and wick from above, good for boxes displayed low
  • Wrap-round window: runs across the front and one side for tall pillar candles

Film or Open Cut-Out

Windows can be left open or covered with a clear film. A film-covered window keeps dust off the candle and stops fingers touching the wax or label, which matters for candles that sit in a shop for weeks. An open cut-out has a more natural look and lets the scent drift out, which some brands like for market stalls where customers sniff before buying. If you choose an open window, keep it small enough that the candle cannot be pushed through or pulled out.

We place the film on the inside of the box so the edges are hidden and the window looks clean from the outside.

Film choice affects the look as well. A crystal-clear film gives the sharpest view of the candle, while a slightly matt film softens reflections under bright shop lighting. For very small windows, an open cut-out can look neater because there is no film edge to catch the light. Film, varnish and lamination are compared in finish options compared side by side.

Sizing Custom Candle Boxes with Window

Measure the candle with its lid on: diameter or width at the widest point, and full height including the lid knob or wick tip. Then decide what should show through the window. Usually that is the label and some of the wax colour. We position the window to frame that area and allow enough board around it to keep the box rigid.

Because the window weakens the panel it sits in, heavier jars benefit from a slightly stiffer board or a simple insert that holds the jar in place behind the window. Without one, a heavy candle can slide forward and press against the film.

If your range includes several vessel heights, consider keeping the window in the same position relative to the top of the box on every size. That way a row of different candles still lines up visually on a shelf, which makes the range look planned rather than assembled. Our method for measuring a jar for its carton covers lids, shoulders and clearance.

Board, Print and Finishing

White folding boxboard prints colour accurately and suits brands with a bright, modern palette. Kraft board gives a natural, handmade feel and pairs well with amber jars and botanical scents. Black board looks dramatic around light-coloured wax and gold-lidded vessels.

Full colour print handles illustrations and photography; one or two colours on kraft keep things simple. Soft-touch and matt laminates suit candles, as do foil and embossed details around the window edge. Print the scent name, burn time, weight and safety information on the panels that are not windowed, and keep the window panel uncluttered so the candle remains the focus.

Black board shows scuffs less than white in a busy shop, which helps boxes look fresh for longer on a self-service shelf.

Who Orders Windowed Candle Boxes

Our windowed candle boxes go to candle brands selling through gift shops and boutiques, home fragrance companies, interiors stores with their own scent range, makers selling at craft fairs, hotels and spas offering branded candles in their shops, and gift box companies. Wax melt and votive makers also use small window boxes for single pieces.

Gift shops that buy candles from several makers sometimes commission their own windowed boxes, printed with the shop's name, so a mixed range of candles looks coherent on their shelves. A standard window size that fits most common jar sizes makes this practical, with a small label on the base naming the maker and the scent.

Hold the Candle Up to a Cut Hole

Before anything is quoted, cut a hole in a piece of card and hold it over your candle to see what the window should show. Most makers find the label and a band of wax is the right view, and the hole is smaller than they expected. Note the position and size of that hole relative to the jar, then measure the jar with its lid on. Decide film or open cut-out based on where the candle sells: film for shops, open for markets where scent sells. For artwork, keep the window area clear on the file and put the safety wording on a panel without a window. A custom quote reaches you by email within one working day with simple window cartons from £0.25, minimums are set per job, and a free proof shows the window outline over your artwork. Production takes 4 to 7 working days after you approve it and UK mainland delivery is free and tracked. Sets that need the candle held in place use our candle boxes with a fitted insert.

Candle Boxes with Window Questions

What buyers ask before ordering candle boxes with window.

Does a candle window need clear film in a gift shop?

For shop display, yes, because film keeps dust and fingers off the wax and label. An open cut-out suits market stalls and craft fairs where you want the scent to come through. Film adds a little to the cost and is applied inside the box.

Where should the window sit on a 30 cl jar candle?

Usually over the label and a band of wax colour, starting about 15 mm above the base of the jar. That shows the brand and the wax without exposing the lid. Tell us what you want to show and we draw the window to frame it.

Does a window weaken the box?

Slightly. We keep enough board around it, and for heavy jars we suggest a stiffer board or a simple insert.

Can the window be cut as a flame or leaf shape?

Yes, flames, leaves, stars and logo outlines all work as shaped windows. Keep narrow points at least 5 mm wide so the board does not tear. The shape is shown on the proof over your artwork.

Can I use a top window?

Yes. A window in the top panel shows the wax surface and wick, which suits boxes displayed on low shelves.

Will the film edges show?

No. We fix the film on the inside of the box so the window looks clean from outside.

Where does the safety information go?

On a panel without a window, usually the back or the base, with the burn time and weight. Keep the warning symbols at the size your supplier specifies. We mark the safety panel on the proof so nothing is covered by the window.

Can a windowed box be posted?

It should go inside a shipping box or padded mailer. For direct posting, a box with an insert is safer.

Which board suits amber jars?

Kraft board pairs naturally with amber glass and warm scents. Black board frames light wax and gold lids strongly. White board suits bright, modern labels.

How long from sending jar measurements to window boxes on the shelf?

The quote comes within one working day and the proof follows once you accept it. Production is 4 to 7 working days after you approve the proof, then free tracked UK mainland delivery takes 2 to 3 working days. Around two weeks end to end is typical.
