Affordable Packaging That Still Looks Finished

Candle makers selling at craft fairs, markets and small shops work on tight margins. Wax, fragrance oil, wicks, vessels and labels already add up, and a rigid gift box can cost more than the candle itself. A single-wall card box is the practical middle ground: it protects the candle, hides scuffs on the vessel, carries your brand and gives customers a neat package to take home or wrap as a present.

A box also changes how a candle is perceived. An unboxed jar on a table looks like stock; the same jar in a printed carton looks like a product ready to be given. Many makers keep a few unboxed candles out for sniffing and sell boxed ones from beneath the table, which keeps the display tidy and the boxed stock clean.

For makers just starting out, a simple card box is often the first piece of branded packaging they order, and it sets the look that labels, bags and later packaging follow.

Boxes also make wholesale easier. Gift shops that stock local makers prefer candles that arrive boxed and barcoded, because they stack on a shelf without chipping and can sit in a stockroom without collecting dust.

Simple Styles That Fold in Seconds

Most cardboard candle boxes are one-piece cartons that fold from a flat blank. The fastest to assemble are tuck end boxes and crash-lock base boxes, where the base locks into place as the box opens up. Sleeves slide over a jar or tin and leave the ends open, which suits candles with a printed label you want to show.

A window cut into the front lets buyers see the wax colour and any decoration on the vessel. For gifts, a simple lid-and-base box gives a more substantial feel without moving into rigid board prices.

  • Tuck end cartons for jars and tins
  • Crash-lock base boxes for heavier jars
  • Open-ended sleeves that show off a printed label

Measuring Your Vessel

Measure the vessel at its widest point, usually the shoulder of a jar or the rim of a tin, and its full height including the lid. Wooden and bamboo lids often add more height than expected. Add two or three millimetres to width and depth and a little more to height, so the candle slides in without rubbing the label and the tuck flap closes flat.

Popular container candles fall into a handful of sizes: small travel tins around 60 mm wide, standard jars of around 80 mm, and larger three-wick vessels of 100 mm or more. If you sell several sizes, keeping the same design across a family of boxes makes your stall look cohesive.

For pillar candles, measure the diameter and height and consider a small card insert at the base so the pillar stays upright and does not rub against the sides.

Always test with a filled, cured candle rather than an empty vessel. Wax can sit slightly above the rim on some jars, and a wooden lid that is pushed down onto a wick can catch on a box that was sized for the empty jar.

Card Choices on a Budget

Kraft card is the favourite for many candle makers. Its warm brown colour suits natural soy and rapeseed waxes, botanical fragrances and handmade branding, and it prints well with black, white or a single dark colour. White card gives brighter print, better for pastel palettes and full colour illustrations.

A mid-weight card is enough for a single jar or tin. If you sell heavy glass vessels or larger three-wick candles, step up a grade or choose a crash-lock base, which supports the weight better than a tuck end. p1 The weights we stock are listed in the plain guide to card and board types.

Getting Good Print Without Overspending

One or two colours on kraft is the most economical print and often the most attractive. A strong logo, the candle name and a simple pattern or illustration are plenty. If you want each scent to look different, print one shared box and add a small scent sticker, or print a coloured band in a few versions.

Leave a clear panel for the information candles need: scent name, wax type, burn time, weight, safety warnings and your business details. A small blank area for a batch sticker helps with traceability and stock rotation.

Avoid laminating kraft unless you need wipe-clean boxes; the uncoated surface is part of its charm.

If you want a single premium touch, a foil logo on kraft is a good choice. It catches the light on a market table, and because it is limited to a small area, it adds only a modest amount to the price of each box. p3 Makers who sell tins rather than jars often choose kraft candle boxes for travel tins with the same one-colour print.

Market Day Tips

Fold boxes the evening before a fair and store them in a crate, so you are not assembling while customers wait. Bring a handful of flat spares for unexpected demand. Keep boxed candles out of direct sun, which can soften wax and fade printed card over a long day.

Wrap glass jars in a sheet of tissue before boxing if they will be carried home in a bag with other purchases. A small sticker seal on the tuck flap stops the box opening in a bag and makes it feel like a proper gift.

Think about how you take payment and pack at the same time. A small stack of folded, sticker-ready boxes beside the card reader lets you box a candle in the time it takes the payment to go through, which keeps the queue moving on busy afternoons. p2 For fairs where a candle is bought as a present, a printed paper bag for candles saves wrapping at the table.

Fold a Paper Mock-Up Round Your Jar First

Before you commit to a size, wrap a sheet of paper round your jar with the lid on, mark where it meets and add 3 mm; that is the inside width. Stand the jar on the paper, mark the height to the top of the lid knob and add 3 mm again. Those two numbers, with the number of jars per size, are all the quote needs. We email it within one working day and a plain kraft box starts from £0.25.

If you run several scents, order one print and a sheet of scent stickers rather than a box per scent; the run is longer, the price per box lower and a new scent costs only a sticker. The proof is free and shows the dieline at your jar size, and the minimum is set per job, so four jar sizes can each run short.

After approval the boxes take 4 to 7 working days and arrive flat by free tracked delivery to UK mainland addresses, which leaves an evening to fold them before a fair. Makers who want the wax colour on show move up to our candle boxes with a clear window when the budget allows.

Cardboard Candle Boxes Questions

What buyers ask before ordering cardboard candle boxes.

Which card is cheapest for candle boxes?

Kraft card with one or two colours is usually the most economical, and it suits natural wax candles well. White card costs a little more and shows bright colours better.

How do I measure my jar?

Measure the widest point and the full height including the lid, then add two or three millimetres on width and depth. Send a photo of the jar beside a ruler if you want us to check the figures.

Will a card box hold a heavy glass jar?

A crash-lock base box supports heavier jars better than a tuck end. A slightly heavier card also helps.

I make six scents. Do I need six different candle boxes?

No. Print one design and add a scent sticker per scent, or print the same layout with a coloured band in a few versions. One run of 600 boxes costs less than six runs of 100, and a new scent only needs a new sticker.

Can a cheap card candle box still have a window?

Yes. A die-cut window with clear film shows the wax colour and the vessel and adds only a little to the cost. We keep the window away from the corners and the base so the carton stays strong.

Do you make boxes for pillar candles?

Yes. A tall box with a small base insert keeps the pillar upright and protects its edges.

What should I tell buyers who ask about disposing of the box?

If the box has a film window, suggest they pull it out first. A card box without a window needs no special instruction.

Will the boxes arrive flat?

Yes. They fold in seconds and take little space in a van or crate.

What does a kraft candle box cost for a small maker?

A plain kraft tuck-end box for a standard jar starts from £0.25 each, depending on size, print and quantity. Foil, windows and crash-lock bases add to that, and the custom quote by email within one working day shows each option separately.

Can I order small runs of several sizes?

Yes. Minimums are low and quoted per job, so a handful of sizes in shorter runs is fine.

How far ahead should I order before a fair?

Allow four to seven working days after proof approval and two to three working days for free tracked delivery. Three weeks before the fair leaves time for a proof change.
