Styles That Work for Candle Retail

A tuck end carton is the everyday candle box. It is light, quick to pack and stacks neatly on a shelf. A crash-lock base is worth adding for heavier glass candles, because it locks firmly when the box is opened up and will not give way when the box is lifted by the lid.

A two-piece lid and base box suits gift candles and larger three-wick jars. A sleeve and tray gives a drawer-style reveal for a hero scent. Window boxes with a round or arched cut-out let customers see the colour of the wax, the wick or the label on the jar, which is helpful when buyers browse several scents together.

Printing on Kraft Without Losing Your Colours

Because kraft is brown and absorbs ink, light colours print darker and more muted than they would on white board. One is to design with the board in mind, using black, white ink or strong deep shades that hold their own against brown. The other is to print a white base layer under your colours, which brings them back to life on the kraft surface.

Foil works beautifully on kraft. Gold, copper and rose gold all sit well against the brown, and a small foiled logo is often the only decoration a candle box needs. Debossing the brand name into the lid is another subtle touch that suits the natural board.

Inserts and Packing for Glass

Glass candle jars are heavy for their size and do not like being knocked. A simple card insert that holds the jar by its shoulders stops it sliding up and down. A base insert raises the jar slightly so the lid does not press against the box top. For three-wick jars and larger vessels, a die-cut insert in thicker board gives extra support.

Inserts in kraft keep the whole presentation consistent, while a black or white insert gives contrast when the box is opened. A slot for a scent card, care guide or thank-you note can be cut into the same insert.

Fragrance can transfer to card over time, which is no bad thing; a box that smells faintly of the candle inside makes a pleasant first impression. If you store boxed stock for long periods, though, keep different scents apart so a strong fragrance does not drift into a lighter one. Packing finished candles only once the wax has fully cured and the lid is on also keeps the inside of the box clean and free of oily marks.

Building a Range That Looks Like a Family

Candle brands sell scent collections, so the boxes need to look related while still helping buyers tell scents apart. A common approach is one box size, one layout and one ink colour for every candle, with a printed candle label, a different foil shade or a small icon to mark each scent.
