Wax Melts Need Packaging That Travels Well

Wax melts are one of the easiest home fragrance products to start making and one of the hardest to package well. They are small, they vary in shape from maker to maker, and soy or blended waxes can soften in a warm van or a sunny shop window. A box has to keep each melt intact, stop fragrance oil marking the packaging and still look tempting enough that a customer adds three more scents to their basket.

Many makers start with plastic clamshells and a sticker. That works, but it limits how much of your brand the customer sees, and every scent looks the same at a glance. A printed box or a card sleeve around the clamshell gives you a full surface for branding, scent notes and burn guidance, and helps your stall look like a brand rather than a table of samples.

The right choice depends on your mould. Snap bars, individual shapes and loose shapes in a bag all package differently, so it is worth starting with the melt itself. Candles in the same range are boxed on our candle boxes for the same range page.

Matching the Box to Your Mould

These are the formats wax melt makers ask us for most often: If you are torn between a carton and a sleeve, our guide to choosing a box style compares them.

  • Snap bar box: a slim tuck carton or sleeve that holds a segmented bar. The most common format, easy to stack and display.
  • Clamshell sleeve: a printed card band that wraps around a clear clamshell, keeping the melts visible while adding branding and scent details.
  • Shape box with window: a small square or round box with a clear panel, ideal for heart, star or flower shaped melts.
  • Gift set box: a wider tray box holding several scents in separate cavities, sold as a discovery set or bundle.
  • Pouch header card: a folded card stapled over the top of a bag of loose melts, a cheap way to brand a refill pack.

Sizing Around Snap Bars and Shapes

Snap bar moulds vary quite a lot, so measure a finished bar from your own mould rather than relying on a size listed by the mould seller. Note the length, width and the height at the thickest segment. We add a small allowance so the bar slides in easily but does not shuffle around. Clamshell sleeves need measuring around the outside of the closed clamshell, including the lip where the two halves meet.

If your melts are domed or have decorations on top, such as mica swirls, dried flowers or glitter, give the lid an extra few millimetres of clearance. Pressing a lid onto soft wax leaves marks that customers notice.

Many makers sell several melt styles. Fitting them into two box sizes rather than five keeps ordering simple, and a standard outer can take different inserts if needed.

A quick tip for new makers: if you are still choosing between moulds, settle on the mould before ordering boxes. It is much easier to make a box around a mould you already own than to find a mould that fits a box, and swapping later can leave you with a cupboard of cartons that are slightly the wrong size. Our method for measuring a snap bar covers clamshells and loose bars.

Keeping Fragrance Oil Off the Print

Fragrance oils can seep from wax melts, especially in heavily scented soy blends or when stock sits in a warm room. On uncoated board this shows as dark patches or a translucent stain spreading from the corners. A laminated inside face, a coated board, or a glassine wrap around the bar all help keep the box looking fresh for longer.

Sealing the melts in a clamshell or a small bag before boxing is the most reliable approach if your scent load is high. It also keeps the fragrance in the melt rather than in the stockroom, so customers get the full throw when they finally use it.

We can send board samples so you can test a melt inside one for a week or two before ordering the full run.

If a box does pick up a mark, a darker inside colour or a patterned liner hides it far better than plain white board. The coatings that resist fragrance oil are compared in our finish guide.

Designing a Range That Sells Together

Home fragrance is an impulse and collection purchase. Customers tend to buy several scents at once, so your boxes should look clearly related while still being easy to tell apart. A common layout with a colour coded panel for each scent family is the simplest way to achieve this. Fruity scents in pinks and corals, fresh scents in blues and greens, and warm scents in ambers and browns make a display look organised and helps customers find their favourites.

Name and describe the scent on the front, and list the top, middle and base notes on the back if you like to give that detail. A short line such as 'fills a small room' or 'light and airy' helps a shopper choose without sniffing every box.

Leave space for your CLP label, which wax melt makers in the UK generally need to display. Many keep this as a separate sticker on the base so it can change with each scent. Scent names that change often are easier as candle labels for scent names on one carton.

Board, Print and Finish

White folding boxboard gives the brightest colours for illustrated or pastel designs. Kraft board suits natural, botanical ranges and looks lovely with white or black print. A soft touch or matt lamination adds a premium feel and gives some protection against oil; gloss lamination makes bright colours shine and wipes clean easily.

Hot foil in gold, rose gold or silver on the brand name lifts a simple design, and a small embossed logo is a nice detail on gift sets. Window patches let colourful melts sell themselves, though they leave less room for printed information.

If you are on a tight budget, a printed sleeve over a plain clamshell gives the most branding for the lowest cost.

Count Your Scents and Pick One Carton for All of Them

Wax melt makers rarely need a box per scent; they need one carton that fits the mould and a way to tell the scents apart. So count the scents you produce and decide between individual prints, which suit a range of six or fewer, and one design with a scent sticker, which suits a range that changes with the season. Then measure the melt: a snap bar flat in its clamshell, or a moulded shape at its widest and tallest point, and tell us how many go in a box. Say where the CLP label sits, because that panel is reserved first. Artwork is a logo and a colour, or a colour per scent, sent as vector files, and the free proof shows the dieline once the format is agreed. A custom quote comes by email within one working day, low minimums are quoted per job so a home-based maker can order a run that fits their storage, and boxes are made in 4–7 working days after approval with free tracked UK mainland delivery. Melts that should be seen through the lid are on our candle boxes with a window page.

Wax Melt Boxes Questions

What buyers ask before ordering wax melt boxes.

What is the best box for wax melt snap bars?

A slim tuck carton or a sleeve sized to your mould is the most popular choice. It stacks neatly, shows the scent name clearly and protects the bar's segments.

Can I put a printed sleeve on my existing clamshells?

Yes. Measure around the closed clamshell and we will make a card band that slides on, giving you full branding without changing your filling routine.

Will fragrance oil stain the box?

Highly scented melts can mark uncoated board. A laminated inside, coated board or glassine wrap helps, and sealing the melts first is the most reliable fix.

Do I need a separate design for every scent?

No. Many makers use one design with a coloured scent panel or a sticker. Separate prints per scent look slick but suit established best sellers more than a changing range.

Where should the CLP label go?

Most makers place it on the base or back as a sticker, so it can change with each fragrance. We can leave a blank panel sized for your label.

Can I have a window to show colourful melts?

Yes. A clear window works especially well for shaped melts with mica or decorations. We position it so it does not interfere with your information panel.

Can you make a box holding several different scents?

Yes. A tray box with separate cavities keeps the scents apart and makes a good discovery set or gift bundle.

Will the melts soften in the box?

The box cannot stop wax softening in heat, so store stock somewhere cool. Allowing a little clearance above the melts prevents lids marking the surface if they do warm slightly.

Are kraft boxes suitable for wax melts?

Kraft is popular for natural and botanical ranges. If your scent load is high, add a glassine wrap or seal the melts first to keep the board clean.

What is the minimum order for wax melt boxes?

Minimums are low and set per job, suiting home-based makers. Simpler styles start from £0.25 on larger runs.

How soon do wax melt boxes arrive after I approve the proof?

We produce them in 4–7 working days, and free tracked UK mainland delivery takes another 2–3 working days. Boxes arrive flat in bundles. Allow a few days before approval for the quote and the proof itself.
