Why a Sample Deserves Its Own Box
A sample is usually the first time someone smells your scent away from the counter. If it arrives as a bare glass vial in a padded envelope, it reads as an afterthought. Put the same vial in a fitted printed carton with the scent name, notes and a route to the full size, and the sample starts doing the work of a sales assistant.
Perfumers use sample boxes in a few different ways. Some send a single vial with every online order as a quiet introduction to another scent. Others sell paid discovery sets so customers can test a whole collection before committing. Independent houses post samples to stockists, press and fragrance writers. Each of those jobs calls for a slightly different box, which is why we size and specify every order from scratch rather than offering one stock carton.
Single Vial Cartons or Multi-Sample Sets
The simplest format is a narrow tuck end carton holding one vial or one travel atomiser. It slides into a mailer, fits in a gift bag and costs little to post. A card insert with a punched hole keeps the vial standing straight so the cap does not work loose in transit.
For discovery sets we usually recommend a two-piece box or a drawer box with a die-cut insert holding a row of vials side by side. The lid can carry the collection name while the inside of the lid lists each scent with a line or two about its character. A sleeve over a plain tray is a good middle ground when you want the set to feel considered without the cost of rigid board.
- Slim tuck end carton for one vial or atomiser
- Sleeve and tray for three to six vials
- Drawer box with ribbon pull for a gift-ready set
- Two-piece lid and base for larger discovery collections
- Hanging tab carton for counter display hooks

Sizing Perfume Sample Boxes Around the Vial
Glass sample vials vary more than most people expect. A dab-on vial is short and thin, a spray sampler is taller because of the pump and cap, and a refillable travel atomiser is wider again, so the guide to measuring your product applies to each one separately. Measure the tallest point with the cap on and the widest point of the bottle, then tell us which of these you are using. If you can post us a couple of empty vials, we will build the insert around them and send a proof showing the cut-outs.
Leave a small allowance above the cap so the insert, not the lid, takes the pressure. For multi-vial sets, decide whether the vials lie flat or stand up. Lying flat makes a thinner box that posts as a large letter more easily; standing up shows the labels better when the lid is lifted.
Board, Print and Finishing Choices
Most single sample cartons are made from white folding boxboard, which takes fine type cleanly and holds its shape at small sizes. Kraft board suits brands with an earthy, botanical style, and black board gives a sharp contrast for foil names. For discovery sets that will be kept, greyboard wrapped in printed or textured paper gives a heavier feel in the hand.
Fragrance packaging relies on small details. A single line of gold or silver foil on the scent name, a soft-touch laminate that feels velvety, or a blind embossed logo can lift a tiny carton more than a full-colour print would. If your main bottle boxes already use a particular colour, send us the reference and we will match the samples so the family looks consistent on a shelf or in a photo.
The inside of the box is useful space too. Many perfumers print the fragrance pyramid of top, heart and base notes inside the lid, or add a short line telling the customer how to claim the sample cost back against a full bottle.
Keeping Glass Vials Safe in the Post
Breakage is the main worry with fragrance samples, and a leaking vial ruins everything else in the parcel. The carton itself is only part of the answer; the vial boxes with inserts show how a card cradle does the rest. What really protects the glass is a snug insert that stops the vial moving, plus enough clearance at each end so a knock on the box does not travel straight into the cap.
For single samples we normally use a folded card cradle that grips the vial around its middle. For sets, a die-cut insert made from thicker board or a layer of foam keeps each vial in its own pocket. If samples are going out loose in a standard envelope, choose a stiffer board for the carton and ask us about a closure sticker so the tuck flap cannot open on its way through a sorting machine.
It also helps to think about how the box is packed at your end. If you fill hundreds of samples by hand, a crash lock bottom or a sleeve that slides on is quicker to assemble than a carton with two tuck flaps. Tell us roughly how many you pack in a session and we will suggest the style that saves the most time.
Who Orders Sample Packaging
Our sample boxes go to independent perfumers, attar and oil makers, niche fragrance houses, candle and home scent brands testing a new line, and online retailers who repackage samples under their own name. Subscription services that send a different scent each month also use them, often with a slot for a small printed card, and build up to a perfume discovery box for the full range.
If you sell on marketplaces, a branded sample box tells your parcel apart from other sellers and gives the customer something with your name on it after the outer packaging has gone in the bin.
Fragrance shops that decant popular scents into their own vials use sample boxes to make a small paid sample feel like a proper product rather than a bottle of leftovers. A neat carton with the scent name and the shop's logo justifies the price and encourages a return visit.
Post Us One of Each Vial Before the Insert Is Drawn
Sample cartons are cut to the millimetre, and vials from different suppliers are not the same, so the insert cannot be drawn from a catalogue size. Post us one of each vial you use, with its cap and any spray pump fitted, and say which goes in which position in a set. Decide whether vials lie flat, which makes a thin box for the post, or stand upright, which shows the labels in a shop. If the samples should match your full-size boxes, send that artwork and the Pantone references, and list every scent so each gets its own proof in one order.
Send the vial sizes, the number per box, the style and a rough quantity, and a custom quote comes by email within one working day, from £0.25 per unit depending on size, board and finish, low minimums quoted per job. A free design proof shows the dieline, the artwork position and the insert. Production takes 4 to 7 working days after approval and free tracked delivery reaches UK mainland addresses in 2 to 3 working days, so allow time for proofing. Houses that sell oils too often add perfume dropper boxes in the same print.

Perfume Sample Boxes Questions
What buyers ask before ordering perfume sample boxes.
Can the insert hold both spray vials and dab vials?
Yes, but the holes need to be cut for each type because spray samplers are usually wider at the cap. Tell us which vial goes in which position and we will cut the insert to suit. A proof shows every cut-out before production.
Should the vials lie flat or stand upright in a discovery set?
Flat vials make a thinner box that is cheaper to post and slips into a letterbox more easily. Upright vials show the labels when the lid opens and feel more like a display. Many perfumers choose flat for postal sets and upright for boxes sold in a shop.
Can you print the fragrance notes inside the lid?
Yes, inside printing is a popular choice on sample sets. The lid interior is a good place for top, heart and base notes or a short note on how to wear each scent. It adds a little to the cost, which we show on your custom quote.
Will the box match my full-size perfume boxes?
Send us the artwork and colour references for your main boxes and we will set up the samples to match. If your bottle boxes use a Pantone colour, we can print the same spot colour on the samples so the family looks consistent.
What is the smallest sample carton you can make?
We can make cartons small enough for a single dab vial, roughly the width of a finger. Very small boxes need simple artwork because fine text becomes hard to read, so we will flag anything that is likely to print too small.
Can a sample box post through a letterbox?
A flat set of three to five vials can be made to sit within large letter dimensions. Tell us that you want letterbox postage and we will keep the depth to suit, then you can check the final size against your carrier's limits.
Do you supply the vials as well?
We supply the printed boxes and inserts only. Send us a sample of the vials you buy so we can size the insert exactly, and we will build the packaging around them.
Which finish feels most premium on a tiny carton?
Soft-touch laminate with a single foil detail tends to feel the most expensive on small boxes. Heavy full-colour print can look busy at this scale, whereas a restrained design with one shiny element reads as expensive.
Can I add a printed card with a discount code?
Yes, a printed scent card or offer card can sit behind the insert or under the vial. It is a simple way to convert a sample into a full-size order, and we can print it in the same run.
How quickly can sample boxes be ready for a launch?
Once you approve the free proof, production takes 4–7 working days and free tracked delivery to UK mainland addresses takes 2–3 working days. Allow time for proofing too, especially if the insert needs adjusting around your vials.
Can I order a different design for each scent?
Yes, a single order can be split across several designs, each with its own scent name and colour. We quote this as one job so a full sample range can be produced together.
