The Shape Problem With Taper Candles
Tapers are the most awkward candles to pack. They are long, thin and slightly conical, with a narrow tip that snaps if it meets the end of a box, and a base that is usually wider than the rest of the candle. Hand-dipped tapers vary a little from one to the next, and coloured or painted tapers mark easily when they rub together. A plain rectangular box with loose candles inside is almost certain to produce chips and broken wicks by the time it reaches a customer.
The answer is a box built around the candle rather than around a standard size. The internal length allows a few millimetres beyond the wick at the top and the flat base at the bottom. The width and depth follow the number of candles and how they are arranged, side by side in a row or stacked in two layers. Inside, an insert keeps each taper separate and stops it sliding end to end. Single tapers sold at a market suit the round candle tube boxes for single tapers.
Measuring Your Tapers Properly
Measure the longest candle in a batch, including the wick, and the widest point of the base. Dinner candles are often sold by nominal length, but the real length can differ by several millimetres once the wick is trimmed, and those millimetres matter when the box is snug. If you sell twisted, spiral or sculptural tapers, measure their widest point along the body too, because twists often bulge beyond the base diameter.
If your range includes several lengths, it may be cheaper to choose one box length for the two longest and a shorter box for stubby tapers, rather than one long box with a lot of empty space. Empty length lets candles slide and adds weight to the parcel.
Weight is worth noting too. Beeswax tapers are noticeably heavier than paraffin or rapeseed blends of the same size, and a box of six beeswax candles can bow a thin carton when it is lifted from one end. If your candles are dense, we will suggest a slightly heavier board or a tray base that spreads the load. Our guide on how to measure a hand-dipped taper explains why five samples beat one.

Inserts That Keep Tips Intact
A slotted card insert is the simplest protection: a strip with cut-outs holds each candle at the base and another holds it near the top, so the candles float inside the box and do not touch each other. For painted or metallic tapers, a scored card separator between each candle prevents rubbing. Moulded pulp trays can also be used for heavier pillar-style tapers, although card inserts are lighter and print better.
A soft wrap of tissue around each candle, inside the insert, adds a finishing touch for premium sets. Some brands print their logo or care instructions directly onto the insert, so it becomes part of the opening moment rather than something thrown away.
Taper Candle Box Styles
Long tuck-end cartons are the most common style: easy to fill, quick to fold and economical to print. A front window shows the candle colour, which is useful for ranges where colour is the main selling point. Two-piece boxes with a lid that slides off lengthways feel more like a gift and suit pairs of handmade candles. Sleeve-and-tray boxes, where a printed outer sleeve slides over a plain tray, let you use one tray across many colours and simply change the sleeve.
For candle makers selling online, a slim corrugated mailer shaped like the retail carton can serve both purposes, posting safely and looking good when opened. Long postal shapes need careful sizing to stay within parcel limits, so tell us if this matters.
Board and Print for Homeware Shelves
Taper candles are often displayed on dining and table decor shelves, next to candlesticks, linen and tableware. Boxes that sit well there tend to be quiet and elegant: a deep colour with a foil logo, a kraft box with a fine line illustration, or a white box with a colour band matching the candle inside. Matt finishes look calm and natural; soft-touch lamination adds a velvety feel that suits luxury table candles.
Use the narrow end panels for colour names and burn time, so a stack of boxes on a shelf reads like a row of book spines. Many homeware buyers stack long boxes horizontally, and a clear end label makes reordering easier for them as well as choosing easier for customers. Safety information and wax ingredients can go on the back panel in a small, clear type. You can see foil on kraft board compared with white ink in our finish guide.
Pairs, Fours and Gift Sets
Pairs are the most popular retail pack because candlesticks usually come in twos. Fours and sixes suit dinner party sets and restaurant buyers. Gift sets combining tapers with a pair of candlesticks or a box of matches need a wider box with a divided insert, and they are a good way to raise the average order value in a gift shop.
If you supply restaurants, hotels or event planners in bulk, a plain inner box with a printed outer sleeve is often enough. It keeps costs sensible while still carrying your brand into the back of house.
Restaurants often reorder the same colour again and again, so a simple reference code printed on the end panel of each box saves time for both sides. Their staff can read the code straight off an empty box, and you can match it to your stock without a back-and-forth about which shade of ivory they meant.
Measure Five Tapers and Size the Slots to the Widest
Hand-dipped tapers are never identical, so measure five from a typical batch at the base, the widest point and the full length to the wick, and size the insert slots to the widest with a little allowance. Twisted and spiral tapers bulge wider than their base, so measure the twist. Decide how many go in a pack, usually a pair or a four, and whether the box is a long tuck carton, a window box that shows the colour or a sleeve-and-tray set that lets one design cover many colours with a coloured end label. Leave a few millimetres beyond the wick so the box end never presses on it. Candles and candlesticks sold together need a wider divided insert, and single tapers suit a candle tube box for one taper.
Send the candle length, base size, pack quantity, box style and artwork, and a custom quote comes by email within one working day, with minimums low enough for a small studio to box several colours. The free proof shows the box and insert at full size. Production takes 4 to 7 working days after approval, boxes arrive flat by tracked courier to UK mainland addresses, and crushed or misprinted cartons reported within 10 days are reprinted or refunded.

Taper Candle Boxes Questions
What buyers ask before ordering taper candle boxes.
How much space should I leave at the tip of a taper?
Leave a few millimetres beyond the wick so the box end never presses on it. We set the exact internal length from your longest candle.
Do I need an insert for a pair of tapers?
We recommend one. Even a simple slotted card holds both candles apart and stops them sliding, which prevents chipped tips and marked colour.
Can I show the candle colour through the box?
Yes. A front window backed with clear film lets shoppers see the colour without opening the box. The insert still holds the candles in place.
What box suits hand-dipped tapers that vary in size?
Allow a little extra width in the insert slots so slightly thicker candles still fit. Measure several candles and send us the largest.
Can twisted or spiral tapers fit standard boxes?
Twists often bulge wider than the base, so measure the widest point. We size the insert and box depth around that measurement.
Can I use one box for many colours?
Yes. A sleeve-and-tray design or a plain box with a coloured end label lets one box design cover many colours, with only the label or sleeve changing.
Can I post taper candles in these boxes?
Retail cartons should go inside a shipping box. If you post single packs, a slim corrugated mailer with the same insert is a better choice.
Is gold foil suitable on kraft taper boxes?
Gold and copper foils look lovely on kraft, especially on simple logos and line drawings. Very fine detail is best kept to white board.
Can a gift box hold candles and candlesticks together?
A wider box with a divided insert can hold both. Send us the candlestick dimensions and we will plan the layout.
What is the minimum for a run of taper candle boxes?
Each job has its own low minimum, so a handful of candle colours can be boxed together. Many candle makers order a few colours of the same box together to keep costs down.
What if tips snap in transit because a box was faulty?
Tell us within 10 days if a carton turns up crushed or misprinted and we will replace it with a reprint or give you a refund.
