What a Discovery Set Has to Do

A discovery set is often the first thing a new customer ever buys from a fragrance house, so the box carries more weight than its size suggests. It has to keep fragile glass vials upright and apart, show off every scent in the range at a glance, and still feel like a small treat rather than a sachet of freebies. Get those three things right and the set does the selling for you.

Most discovery boxes are built around a slotted insert. Each vial sits in its own cradle, usually lying flat in a row or standing in a line, and the lid or sleeve closes over the top so nothing rattles in the post. The outer shell can be a two-piece lid and base, a slim drawer that slides out of a printed sleeve, or a book-style box that opens like a cover to reveal the line-up.

Because the customer handles each vial one at a time, the inside of the box matters as much as the outside. Many perfumers print a short note under each slot naming the scent and its main accords, so the buyer can match the vial back to its name long after the labels have rubbed. Full-size bottles from the same house sit in printed perfume boxes with a fitted insert designed to match.

Choosing a Box Style for Your Vials

The right style depends on how many vials you include and how premium you want the set to feel. Here is how the main options compare: A drawer and sleeve for four to six vials, a lid-and-base for a flat row, a book-style rigid box for a premium set, a folding carton for sampling at volume, and a window lid for counters; the sleeve version is the perfume drawer box with a ribbon pull.

  • Drawer and sleeve: a slim tray slides out of a printed outer sleeve, giving a satisfying reveal and a tidy profile for letterbox delivery.
  • Two-piece lid and base: the classic gift look, with room to print on the lid top and the inside of the base.
  • Book-style rigid box: a hinged cover with a magnetic or plain closure, best for sets sold at a higher price point.
  • Folding carton with insert: the lightest and most economical option, ideal for sample sets bundled with orders or handed out at counters.
  • Window lid: a cut-out lets the vial caps show through, useful if the set will sit on a shop shelf.

Sizing Around the Vial, Not the Box

Always start with the vial. Sample vials come in many shapes, from slim 1 ml and 2 ml glass tubes to stubby 5 ml atomisers with a spray head, and a few millimetres either way changes the whole insert. Send us the vial diameter, the overall height with cap or sprayer fitted, and how many you want in each set. If you can post a sample vial, even better, because we can test the slot depth against the real thing.

From there we work out the slot spacing. Vials lying flat need a little more width per slot than standing ones, while standing vials need a deeper base so the caps sit just below the lid. We leave enough finger room to lift each vial out cleanly without tipping the box over, which is a detail customers notice straight away.

If you plan to vary the line-up later, ask for an insert that suits the most common vial in your range. One standard insert used across several sets keeps reorders simple and lets you print just the scent names differently each time. The slot allowances are the same as those in our guide to measuring a product for packaging.

Board, Print and Finish for Fragrance Sets

For folding cartons we usually suggest a smooth white board around 350 to 400 gsm, which takes fine type and dark colours cleanly. Rigid discovery boxes use a thick greyboard core wrapped in printed paper, giving the weight and crisp edges that fragrance buyers expect. Kraft board suits niche and natural perfume brands that want an earthy, unpolished look.

Printing is full colour CMYK as standard, with Pantone matching if your brand colour has to be exact. Soft-touch lamination gives a velvety feel that suits darker designs, while gloss brightens pale and pastel artwork. Hot foil in gold, silver, rose gold or copper is the most popular extra on perfume packaging and works well for the logo and scent names. Embossing or debossing adds texture without adding colour, and spot UV can pick out a pattern on a matt background.

The insert itself can be card, printed to match, or a foam insert in black or white for a more cushioned feel. Card inserts are lighter and easier to print scent notes onto, while foam grips glass vials more firmly on long journeys. Each finish is shown on a dark board in our print and finish comparison.

Making the Set Work Harder for Sales

A good discovery box earns its cost back by leading to a full-size purchase. Many fragrance houses print a short code or a QR link inside the lid that takes the buyer to the full bottles, sometimes with credit towards their first order. Others include a folded card explaining each scent family, so the customer knows which vial to try first.

Think about where the set will be seen. If it goes out by post, a slim drawer box that fits through a letterbox saves the customer a trip to the depot. If it will sit by a till, a window or bold side panel helps it get noticed. For wedding favours, corporate gifting or influencer seeding, a rigid box with a printed ribbon pull feels more like a present than a sample.

Discovery sets also make a natural bridge between product launches. When a new scent joins the range, swapping one vial and reprinting the scent guide is far cheaper than redesigning a whole gift box, and loyal customers get a reason to buy the set again. Some houses run a numbered edition on the base or inside the lid so each batch feels collectable without changing the structure of the box at all. Houses that later build a full line-up box move to the perfume collection boxes for several bottles with the same insert logic.

Send a Vial With Its Sprayer Fitted and Say How It Will Be Opened

Two details make a discovery box fit first time. The first is the vial measured with its sprayer or cap fitted, because a 2 ml glass tube is 10 mm taller with an atomiser head than without, and that difference is what makes a lid stick or a vial rattle. The second is how the customer will open the set: a drawer pulled from a sleeve, a lid lifted off or a cover swung open like a book. That choice fixes whether vials lie flat or stand, and therefore the slot spacing. Count the scents, add a spare slot if the line is growing, and decide whether a scent card goes inside the lid. Houses that send a single vial to press use the smaller perfume sample boxes for one vial.

Email the vial measurements or post a vial, with the slot count, style and artwork, and a custom quote comes back within one working day, followed by a free design proof showing the insert. Boxes are made in 4 to 7 working days after approval and delivered free and tracked on the UK mainland in 2 to 3 days. Sets that arrive damaged or misprinted are replaced or refunded when reported within 10 days.

Perfume Discovery Boxes Questions

What buyers ask before ordering perfume discovery boxes.

Can you cut the insert to fit our exact sample vials?

Yes. Send us the vial diameter and its height with the cap or sprayer fitted, or post us a vial. We set the slot depth and spacing around it so each vial sits snugly and lifts out without the box tipping.

Should the vials lie flat or stand upright?

Lying flat gives a slimmer box that suits letterbox delivery. Standing upright shows the caps in a neat line and suits counter display. We can make either and will suggest one based on how you plan to sell the set.

Can we print a scent name under each vial slot?

We can print directly onto a card insert so each slot is labelled. Many brands add the main notes beside the name, which helps the customer remember which vial they liked.

Will glass vials survive being posted in these boxes?

A snug card insert holds glass vials securely for most postal journeys. For heavier atomisers or long-distance shipping we suggest a foam insert, which grips the glass more firmly.

Can the discovery box fit through a letterbox?

Yes, if the vials lie flat and the box stays slim. Tell us that letterbox delivery matters and we will design around a shallow depth from the start.

What finish suits a luxury fragrance brand?

Soft-touch lamination with hot foil on the logo is the most requested combination. Embossing adds a tactile detail, and a rigid book-style box gives the most premium feel.

Can we add a QR code or discount card inside?

Yes. We can print a code inside the lid or supply a separate printed card that sits under the insert. Both are popular ways to turn sample buyers into full-bottle customers.

Can we use one insert across different scent sets?

Yes, as long as the vials are the same size. Keeping one insert and changing only the printed scent names makes reorders quicker and keeps setup costs down.

Do you offer kraft discovery boxes?

We do. Kraft board suits natural and artisan perfume brands, and it pairs well with a single dark ink or a foil logo for contrast.

How do we check the design before printing?

You receive a free design proof showing every outer panel and the insert layout. Nothing goes to press until you approve it, so you can check each scent name and spelling first.

How soon can we have sets ready for a launch?

Production takes 4–7 working days after you approve the proof, followed by free tracked delivery to the UK mainland in 2–3 working days. Get in touch early if the launch date is fixed so we can plan the proof stage around it.
