Custom Partial Cover Rigid Boxes
Custom partial cover rigid boxes have a lid that slides down only part of the way over the base, leaving a band of the base on show below it. That visible strip becomes a design feature, often in a contrasting colour, and gives gift sets a layered, finished look that a standard lid-and-base box does not.

How the Partial Cover Design Works
A standard two-piece rigid box has a lid that covers the base completely, so when it is closed you see only the lid. On a partial cover box, the lid is shallower than the base. Close it and a strip of the base, usually somewhere between 15mm and 40mm, stays visible around the bottom of the box.
Some versions add a shoulder: a raised inner collar fixed inside the base that the lid rests on. The collar, the lid and the base can each be wrapped in a different paper, giving three tones in a single closed box. When the lid lifts off, the collar reveals the contents and keeps the inner edges neat.
The effect is subtle but noticeable. Closed, the box looks like a carefully made object with a deliberate stripe. Opened, the layered structure feels solid and well finished, which is exactly what premium gift sets need.
Products That Suit a Partial Cover Box
Partial cover rigid boxes suit any product where presentation is part of the price. Fragrance and skincare gift sets, watches and jewellery, premium chocolates, spirits miniatures, tea collections and corporate gifts are common. Because the boxes are rigid, they also protect fragile glass and delicate items better than folding cartons.
They work especially well for sets that customers keep. A sturdy rigid box with a close-fitting lid often becomes a storage box for jewellery, letters or keepsakes, which keeps your brand in view long after the gift has been used.
Brands with several products at different price points sometimes reserve the partial cover style for the top of the range. A standard lid box for everyday sets and a partial cover box for the signature collection creates a clear visual step up, so customers can see which set is the special one before reading a label.

Planning the Visible Band
The visible band is the defining detail, so plan it carefully. A deeper band makes a bold statement and suits tall boxes, and the print and finish options compared page shows how two papers sit together. A slim band is more understated and suits shallow boxes such as jewellery or chocolate sets. As a rough guide, the band usually looks balanced at around a quarter to a third of the total box height.
Colour choices change the mood. A black lid over a gold band feels luxurious. A white lid over a pastel band feels fresh and modern. Matching lid and band with a contrasting shoulder is a quieter option where the colour only appears when the box is opened. Textured papers on the band, such as linen or leather-look stock, add another layer of detail.
Some brands print the band with a repeating pattern or the brand name, so the stripe works like a ribbon running round the box.
Sizing and Inserts for Gift Sets
Start with the items and the layout you want the recipient to see when the lid comes off. Lay them out, measure the footprint and the tallest item, and add room for an insert, following the guide to measuring your product. Rigid boxes are made from thick greyboard, typically 1.5mm to 2.5mm, so the outer size will be noticeably larger than the internal space.
Inserts hold each item in place and show off the arrangement. Card inserts wrapped in matching paper look clean. Foam inserts, often covered with velvet or satin-look fabric, cradle glass and jewellery. Moulded pulp suits heavier items. A lift ribbon under the insert helps the recipient lift items out.
For gift sets that change through the year, a removable insert lets you reuse the same outer box with different contents.
Printing Partial Cover Rigid Boxes with Logo
Partial cover rigid boxes with logo branding usually keep the lid clean, with a single logo centred or placed near one edge. Foil blocking in gold, silver or a coloured foil is the classic choice. Debossing or embossing adds texture. Spot UV on a matt black lid creates a tone-on-tone logo that appears as the box moves in the light.
Full colour printing on the wrap paper is possible for patterned or illustrated designs, and the inside of the lid can be printed too. Soft-touch lamination gives the lid a velvety feel that invites people to pick the box up.
Keep the band simple if the lid is busy, or vice versa. Two competing designs can make the box look cluttered instead of considered.
Shipping and Storage
Rigid boxes are delivered ready assembled, as the board cannot be folded flat. That means they take up more room than folding cartons, so plan space for storage when you order, and post them inside a fitted rigid mailer box. Stack them carefully with the lids on to protect the corners and keep the paper wraps clean.
For online orders, place the rigid box in a fitted corrugated mailer. Its strength protects the contents, but the paper wrap can still scuff on the outside in transit.
If your stockroom is small, ask about staggered deliveries. Splitting a larger run into two or three drops keeps space free while still giving you a consistent batch from the same production run.
Pick the Band Depth and the Two Papers Before Anything Else
A partial cover box is defined by the strip of base that shows below the lid, so start there. Decide how deep the band should be, usually 15 to 40 mm or a quarter to a third of the box height, and which two papers sit against each other, because that join is what the customer sees first. Send Pantone references and say which colour must match exactly, since wrap papers look different on screen and in hand. Then lay out the contents, measure the footprint and the tallest item, and choose the insert: foam for glass, wrapped card for chocolates or jewellery.
Send the item sizes, the band depth and colours and an idea of quantity, and a custom quote comes back within one working day, low minimums set per job. A free design proof shows the lid, the band and the insert layout, with both colours noted. The boxes are hand finished over 4 to 7 working days after approval and dispatched free by tracked courier to UK mainland addresses in 2 to 3 working days. Brands that want a third colour inside often step up to the rigid shoulder boxes with a visible collar.

Partial Cover Rigid Boxes Questions
What buyers ask before ordering partial cover rigid boxes.
How much of the base shows below the lid?
You choose. Most bands sit between 15mm and 40mm, or roughly a quarter to a third of the box height.
Can the band be a different colour from the lid?
Yes. That contrast is the main appeal of the style. Lid, band and inner collar can each use a different paper.
What is the shoulder collar?
It is an inner raised edge fixed inside the base. The lid rests on it and it reveals a third colour when the box opens.
Do partial cover rigid boxes arrive assembled?
Yes. Rigid boxes are delivered assembled, because the thick greyboard cannot be folded flat, so allow storage space for them. Nested sizes save some room if you order more than one.
Which insert suits glass bottles?
A foam insert, often covered in velvet-look fabric, cradles glass securely. Moulded pulp is another option for heavier items.
Can I print a pattern on the band?
Yes. A repeating pattern or brand name on the band can look like a ribbon running round the box.
How thick is the board?
Rigid boxes use greyboard between 1.5 mm and 2.5 mm, depending on box size and the weight of the contents. A chocolate box sits at the thinner end; a spirits set with glass goes to the thicker board.
Can I reuse the box for different gift sets?
With a removable insert, yes. Change the insert and contents while keeping the same outer box.
How should I post a rigid gift box?
Place it in a fitted corrugated mailer to protect the paper wrap from scuffs in transit. The mailer can be quoted with the boxes so the fit is snug.
Are rigid partial cover boxes slower to produce?
They are hand finished, but they follow the same schedule: 4 to 7 working days after proof approval, then 2 to 3 working days for free tracked delivery. Matching two papers on the proof is the step to approve promptly.
What if a box arrives with scuffed paper?
Tell us within 10 days with photos. Damaged or misprinted boxes are reprinted or refunded.
