The Handover Is Part of the Shoot

Clients remember how a session felt and how the photographs arrived. A stack of prints in a paper envelope says the job is done. The same prints in a fitted box with your name on the lid say the work was valued, and that feeling is what leads to recommendations, repeat bookings and print sales.

Photo boxes also protect the work. Prints are easily bent, scuffed and fingerprinted, and an album corner dents in seconds. A rigid box with a snug fit keeps everything flat, clean and together, whether it is handed over in person or posted across the country.

For many photographers, the box is also the moment a client decides whether to order more prints, a wall piece or an album upgrade. When the first delivery feels special, clients are far more likely to come back for extras, and the box itself becomes a reminder sitting on their shelf for years. Wedding photographers often pair prints with book-style gift boxes for albums.

Styles for Prints, Albums and USBs

Photographers rarely deliver just one thing, so boxes are often designed around a combination. A wedding photographer might deliver a set of mounted prints, a USB drive and a thank-you card. A portrait studio might hand over a folio of ten prints. We size inserts and compartments to suit your package.

If your packages change often, a box with a removable insert gives flexibility. The outer box stays the same, and different inserts hold a USB in one package or an extra print set in another, so you only stock one printed box.

Sizing Custom Photo Print Boxes

Start with your most common print size. A box for 6 x 4 inch prints, which is roughly 152 x 102 mm, needs an inside size a few millimetres larger to let fingers lift the prints out. For 7 x 5 and 10 x 8 inch prints, the same principle applies. Mounted prints add thickness, so count how many you deliver and measure the stack.

If prints and a USB share a box, plan the layout first. A USB insert can sit under the prints in a recess, beside them in a compartment, or in the lid. Each option changes the box depth and the order in which the client discovers things.

Photographers offering several packages often choose two box sizes: a small one for print sets and a larger one for albums or premium bundles.

Think about the client opening the box. Prints should lift out without the need to tip the box upside down, which can damage the top print. A ribbon laid under the stack, or a finger notch cut into the side of the insert, makes removing the prints easy and graceful. Our measuring guide for custom boxes shows how much clearance to allow around a stack.

Materials and Feel

Rigid greyboard wrapped in printed or textured paper is the classic photography box. It feels substantial, protects well and lasts for years on a shelf. Linen-texture and soft-touch wraps are popular because they look calm and let the photographs inside take centre stage.

Folding board boxes are lighter and arrive flat, which suits photographers who deliver large volumes of smaller print sets, such as school and event photography. They can still look refined with a matt finish and a foil logo.

Colour inside the box is worth choosing carefully too. A white or pale interior lets colour prints look true, while a dark interior makes black and white work look striking. Some photographers line the base with a printed paper that shows their logo pattern once the prints are lifted out. Most studios choose greyboard boxes wrapped in paper for a solid, weighty feel.

Branding Without Shouting

Photography boxes usually carry restrained branding. A logo or studio name foil blocked on the lid, perhaps in white, gold or a tone close to the wrap colour, is enough. Some photographers add their website on the base or inside the lid, and a short printed message, such as a thank-you, on the inside of the box.

Neutral colours such as white, black, charcoal, sand and soft grey suit most styles of photography. If you photograph weddings, a single box colour across all clients builds a recognisable signature.

If you work under more than one brand, for example weddings and newborns, the same box structure can carry two different lid designs. That keeps your stock simple while giving each side of the business its own feel. A custom embossed box lid carries a logo without any ink at all.

Posting Boxes to Clients

Rigid boxes are strong but their corners mark if they go through a parcel network unprotected. For posted deliveries, pack the photo box in a plain corrugated mailer with a little padding. We can supply mailers sized to fit your boxes snugly so there is no room to slide around.

Add a layer of tissue or a glassine sleeve over the prints inside the box to prevent rubbing between the top print and the lid.

When delivering in person, a fabric or paper carrier bag with your logo completes the handover. Clients walk out of the studio with something that feels like a gift, rather than juggling a box under their arm. For posting, a rigid mailer box as an outer keeps the presentation box clean.

Ordering for Your Studio

Send us your print sizes, how many prints you usually deliver, any USB or album sizes and your logo. We will email a custom quote within one working day and prepare a free design proof showing the box, insert and logo placement.

Boxes are made over 4 to 7 working days once you sign off the proof, then sent free and tracked to UK mainland addresses, typically arriving 2 to 3 working days later. Minimums are low and quoted per job, so a new studio can start with a modest stock. If boxes arrive misprinted or damaged, report it within 10 days and we will reprint or refund.

Plan your stock around your busiest months. Wedding and family photographers often deliver most of their work in a few concentrated periods, so ordering boxes before those months begin avoids running short just as galleries are being finished.

Photo Print Boxes Questions

What buyers ask before ordering photo print boxes.

What size box fits 6 x 4 inch prints?

An inside size of around 160 x 110 mm leaves room to lift the prints out comfortably. The depth depends on how many prints you deliver and whether they are mounted.

Can the box hold a USB drive as well as prints?

Yes, we can add an insert with a cut-out for a USB drive, either under the prints, beside them or in the lid. Send the USB size and we will plan the layout.

Which material feels most premium?

Rigid greyboard wrapped in linen-texture or soft-touch paper is the most popular premium choice. It feels substantial and lasts for years.

Can my logo be foil blocked on the lid?

Yes, foil blocking in white, gold, silver or a coloured foil is a classic choice for photography boxes. Debossing is another subtle option.

Are folding board boxes good enough for clients?

For high-volume work such as school or event photography, folding board boxes with a matt finish look smart and keep costs sensible. For weddings and premium portraits, rigid boxes are usually preferred.

How should I post a photo box?

Pack it in a corrugated mailer sized to the box with a little padding. Rigid box corners can mark in parcel networks without an outer layer. We can supply matching mailers.

Can I print a message inside the lid?

Yes, a short thank-you or care message inside the lid is a nice touch. It is included as an extra print area in your custom quote.

Do you make album boxes?

Yes, we size album boxes to your album dimensions with a thumb notch or ribbon so the album lifts out easily. Send the album size including any cover overhang.

Can I order two sizes with the same design?

Yes, many studios order a small and a large box with matching wraps and logos. This keeps the presentation consistent across packages.

Will boxes arrive before my next wedding gallery is ready?

Order once your design is settled. Your custom quote arrives within one working day; after proof approval, production takes 4 to 7 working days and free tracked UK mainland delivery usually takes 2 to 3 working days.

Can a new studio order a small quantity?

Yes, minimums are low and quoted per job. Starting small lets you test the box with clients before ordering more.
