Custom Paper Tubes with End Caps

from £0.25 a tubePriced per job · low minimums

Custom paper tubes with end caps are rigid spiral-wound tubes closed at each end with a push-in plastic cap or a fitted card disc, so rolled posters, prints and fabric travel without creasing. We cut them to your length and diameter and can wrap them in printed paper so the tube itself carries your brand.

The Problem With Rolled Goods

Anything that ships rolled is vulnerable at the ends. A poster rolled into a thin tube with taped ends often arrives with crushed corners or a split end where the tape gave way. Fabric samples and wallpaper rolls slide out if the closure is weak. A proper end cap fits tightly into the tube bore, takes the knocks of handling and comes out cleanly when the customer wants to open it.

Wall thickness matters as much as the caps. A tube with walls too thin will dent if a heavier parcel lands on it, and a dent in the tube becomes a crease in the print. We wind tubes in different wall thicknesses, so a light A3 print can go in a slim, economical tube while a heavy canvas or roll of upholstery fabric gets a stiffer one.

A good tube also saves time at the packing bench. Rolling a print, sliding it in and pressing a cap home takes seconds, compared with taping and padding a flat package, which matters when you are sending dozens of orders after a print release. Posters and art prints that need extra length are covered by our long postal tubes for posters.

Plastic Caps or Card Ends

The cap you choose affects cost, appearance and how easily the tube opens and closes again. If you prefer a tube that closes with a full lid, see our paper tubes with full lids.

  • Push-in plastic caps are the standard for postal tubes. They grip firmly, resist knocks and can be removed and refitted many times.
  • Plastic caps with a pull tab are easier for customers to remove without a knife.
  • Card end discs fitted flush inside the tube look neater and keep the whole pack paper-based.
  • Metal end closures crimped onto the tube suit heavy, long-term storage of textiles and drawings.
  • Telescopic lids, where a wider card cap slides over the tube end, give a premium look for gift tubes.

Working Out Length and Diameter

Length should be the width of the rolled item plus enough to fit the caps and a small margin. A poster printed at A2 is 420 mm on its short side, so if you roll it along that side you need a tube a little longer than that once the caps are in place. Roll along the long side and you need a longer tube but a smaller diameter.

Diameter depends on how thick the rolled item is. Thin paper prints roll tightly into a narrow tube, but heavy art paper and canvas resist rolling tightly and need more room. Too tight a roll can mark the paper, so it is better to choose a slightly wider tube than force a print into a narrow one. If you send us the paper weight and number of sheets per tube, we will suggest a suitable inside diameter.

For multiple prints in one order, roll them together with the largest on the outside, interleaved with tissue so the printed surfaces do not rub. Allow a little extra diameter for the tissue layers.

If your catalogue covers several print sizes, two or three tube lengths usually cover everything. Fewer sizes means simpler stock control and a better price per tube on each run. Our notes on how to measure your product for packaging help with rolled items too.

Plain Kraft or Printed Wraps

A plain brown kraft tube is the workhorse for postal use. It is strong, cheap and takes a shipping label well. Many print shops and illustrators add a printed sticker or a branded tape to plain tubes and leave it there.

For retail and gift use, a printed outer wrap changes the tube completely. A full-colour wrap can carry artwork, product information and branding round the whole circumference. Matt, gloss and soft-touch finishes are available, along with foil blocking on a logo. White tubes give a clean base for bright print; black tubes suit premium art prints and photography.

A printed wrap also suits limited edition prints, where the tube becomes part of what the collector keeps. For a sturdier shelf tube rather than a posting tube, rigid paper tubes for retail take the same printed wraps.

Textiles and Fabric Rolls

Fabric shops, upholsterers and textile designers use capped tubes for two jobs: as a core for rolling fabric onto, and as a protective tube for sending swatches and short lengths. A core tube needs a rigid wall so the fabric can be wound tightly without the tube collapsing. A protective tube needs a wider bore and secure caps so the fabric stays clean and does not shift.

For delicate textiles such as silk scarves or vintage prints, we can add a tissue wrap and a printed label to the cap. For heavier fabrics, crimped metal ends give the strongest closure.

Swatch tubes sent to interior designers often carry a printed label on the cap listing the fabric name and colour reference, so the tube can be identified on a shelf without opening it. Rolls that need a wider core can use wide cylinder postal tubes instead.

Posting Tubes Without Surprises

Long, narrow parcels often fall into a separate postal category, and charges can jump once a tube passes a certain length. Check the size limits of the service you use before settling on a length. Sometimes rolling a print along its other side, or folding a small border under, brings the tube into a cheaper band.

Triangular and square tubes do not roll off a sorting belt and are sometimes preferred by couriers, but round tubes remain the most widely accepted. Whichever you choose, write the contents on the label as rolled prints or textiles so handlers treat it with a little care.

For framed artwork or anything that cannot be rolled, a capped tube is the wrong format, and a flat art print box will serve you better. We are happy to quote both if your range includes rolled and flat items. If you take the flat route, art print shipping boxes hold prints flat and protected.

Paper Tubes with End Caps Questions

What buyers ask before ordering paper tubes with end caps.

What inside diameter do I need for posters?

For a few thin prints, a narrow tube is fine. Heavier art papers and canvas need a wider tube so they are not rolled too tightly. Send the paper weight and sheet count and we will advise.

Are plastic caps secure enough for posting?

Yes. Push-in plastic caps grip tightly and survive normal postal handling. For extra security, a strip of branded tape over each cap stops them being knocked out.

Can customers reuse the tube for storage?

Yes. Plastic caps can be removed and refitted many times, so customers often keep the tube to store the print until it is framed.

Which cap is easiest to open?

Plastic caps with a pull tab come out without a knife. Telescopic lids are also easy to open and look neat on gift tubes.

Can I get tubes in a custom length?

Yes. We cut tubes to the length you need, so you do not pay for wasted space or postage on an oversized tube.

Can the tube be printed all the way round?

Yes. A printed wrap covers the full circumference. The proof shows where the seam falls so you can keep important text away from it.

Do you make tubes strong enough to wind fabric onto?

Yes. Heavy wall core tubes stay rigid when fabric is wound tightly onto them. Tell us the fabric weight and roll length.

How do I keep postage costs down on long tubes?

Check your courier's length limits and choose the shortest tube that fits. Rolling the print along its other side can sometimes bring it into a cheaper band.

Can I order plain tubes and add my own labels?

Yes. Plain kraft tubes with your own stickers or branded tape are a popular low-cost choice for print shops and illustrators.

Can tubes be supplied in black or white?

Yes. White and black tube boards are available as well as kraft. Black suits premium art and photography; white gives a clean base for bright print.

What happens if a tube arrives dented?

Tell us within 10 days with a photo and we will reprint or refund the affected tubes.
