Custom Push-Up Paper Tubes for Balms and Deodorant Sticks
Custom push-up paper tubes hold a solid product such as a lip balm, deodorant or lotion bar, which the user pushes up from the base as they go. They give natural cosmetic brands a card tube instead of a plastic case, printed right round with your label.

How a Push-Up Tube Works
A push-up tube is a spiral or convolute wound paper tube with a lid at the top and a sliding disc or plunger at the base. The product is poured in hot or pressed in solid, sets inside the tube, and the user pushes the base with a thumb to raise a little more each time they apply it. There is no twisting mechanism, so the design is simple and the whole pack is card apart from any lining.
The inside surface usually carries a grease-resistant lining, because balms, butters and deodorant bases contain oils and waxes that would otherwise soak into raw paperboard and stain the outside. The fit between the push-up disc and the tube wall is the most important detail: too loose and the product wobbles or slips down when the lid is off; too tight and the user struggles to push it up, especially in cold weather when the product is firm. The same spiral-wound core is used, without the plunger, on our kraft paper tubes with a lift-off lid.
Products That Suit Push-Up Paper Tubes
Solid deodorants are the best-known use, but the format suits anything that sets firm at room temperature. Lip balms in slim tubes, solid perfumes, lotion bars, massage bars, cuticle balms, beard balms, sun sticks, muscle rubs and solid cleansers all work well. Some food brands use larger push-up tubes for frozen treats or solid honey sticks, though that brings its own requirements.
Products that stay soft or turn liquid in a warm room are less suitable, as they can seep around the disc. If your formula is soft, a firmer wax blend or a slightly smaller tube diameter can help, and a test batch will tell you quickly. Firmer gift products such as solid perfume sticks sometimes go in the thicker-walled rigid paper tubes with a deep lid instead.

Choosing Diameter and Height
Diameter is set by how the product is used. Lip balms work best in slim tubes, around 15 to 20 mm across, which sit comfortably against the lips. Deodorant sticks need a wider face, usually 40 to 55 mm, to cover the underarm in a few strokes. Lotion and massage bars can go wider still.
Height is set by fill volume. Work out the volume of product you want per tube, then add a few millimetres at the top for clearance under the lid and at the bottom for the disc. Tall slim tubes look elegant but can be harder to push up evenly near the end, so for deodorants a shorter, wider tube is often more practical. We can send plain sample tubes so you can pour a test batch and see how it sets and pushes before committing to print.
If you sell a range, matching diameters across products keeps the shelf tidy and lets you share lids and bases between lines. A deodorant and a body balm in the same 52 mm tube, with different wraps, look like a family and simplify stock. Only the height needs to change to suit each fill volume. If you are unsure about the fill calculation, our guide to measuring for packaging covers volume as well as length.
Linings, Lids and Bases
The inner lining is usually a grease-resistant paper or a thin wax-based coating suited to oily cosmetic formulas. If your formula is particularly rich in essential oils or carrier oils, mention it, as some oils travel through paper faster than others and may need a heavier lining. Food-contact grade board is available on request for products that need it.
Lids can be plain or printed, with a flat or slightly domed top. A friction fit holds the lid snugly without a thread. Bases come as a flat card disc or a shaped push-up plunger with a thumb recess that makes the action more comfortable. A small tamper-evident sticker across the lid and tube shows the product has not been opened. The lining and lid choices are the same ones listed on our board and finish page.
Designing Custom Push-Up Paper Tubes
The outer wrap gives you a full 360 degree canvas. Most brands put the product name and scent on the front, ingredients and directions on the back, and a simple pattern or colour band running round to tie it together. On slim lip balm tubes, space is very tight, so keep the name large and move ingredients to a small, legible block or an outer carton if needed.
Uncoated kraft wraps look natural and suit handmade brands. White paper wraps give brighter colour and suit modern skincare. Foil stamping on the name or logo adds a premium touch without changing the paper feel, and a soft matt finish is pleasant to hold. Be careful with heavy gloss laminates on balm tubes, as oily fingers can leave marks that show more on a shiny surface. The free proof shown as a flat wrap marks where the wrap seam falls so the logo does not sit across it.
Filling and Handling Tips
Most makers fill push-up tubes by standing them upright with the disc in place at the bottom, pouring the melted product in, and letting it set before fitting the lid. Pour at the lowest temperature your formula allows, as very hot product can soften the lining and affect the seal around the disc. Allow tubes to cool fully at room temperature; putting them in a fridge too quickly can cause cracking or shrinkage away from the walls.
A simple filling rack, even a block of wood drilled with holes, keeps tubes upright and speeds up batches. Keep finished stock out of direct sunlight and away from heaters, especially in a shop window.
Label each batch on the base disc or with a small sticker before the lid goes on, so you can trace any customer query back to the day it was poured. It takes seconds per tube and saves a great deal of guesswork later if a fragrance or texture ever needs checking. Brands that move into gift sets keep the same diameter for the luxury paper tubes with foil detail in the set.
Test Your Formula in a Plain Tube Before Printing
A push-up tube is only right if the product behaves in it, so the first order should be a handful of plain tubes in the diameter you expect. Pour a batch, let it set, leave one tube in a warm room and one in a cold one for a week, then push each up. If the product seeps round the disc or crumbles, the formula or the lining needs changing before any print is bought. Once it passes, set the height from your fill volume: a 52 mm tube holds roughly 2 ml per millimetre of height, so a 50 g deodorant needs about 25 mm of fill plus 10 mm of clearance. Lip balm makers who want a capped tube rather than a push-up use paper tubes with pressed end caps.
Email the product type, fill volume, diameter, lining and artwork with the quantity, and a custom quote comes back within one working day, followed by a free design proof showing the wrap flat. Tubes are made in 4 to 7 working days after approval and arrive free and tracked on the UK mainland in 2 to 3 days. Tubes with loose discs or print faults reported within 10 days are replaced or refunded.

Push-Up Paper Tubes Questions
What buyers ask before ordering Push-Up paper tubes.
Will the oils in my balm stain the tube?
The inner lining is chosen to resist oils and waxes. If your formula is very oil-rich, tell us so we can suggest a heavier lining.
What diameter suits a deodorant stick?
Most solid deodorants use a tube between 40 and 55 mm across. That gives a wide enough face to apply in a few strokes.
Why is my product hard to push up?
The disc may be too tight or the product too firm when cold. We size the disc to your tube and can send samples to test your formula.
Can I pour hot product straight into the tube?
Yes, but pour at the lowest temperature your formula allows. Very hot product can soften the lining.
Do I need a tamper-evident seal?
It is a good idea for products sold online or in shops. A small sticker across the lid and tube is the simplest option.
How do I fit ingredients on a slim lip balm tube?
Keep the name large and the ingredients in a small, legible block on the back. An outer carton can carry extra detail if needed.
Which wrap looks best for a handmade brand?
Uncoated kraft with one or two dark ink colours feels natural and handmade. White paper suits brighter, modern designs.
Can the lid be printed too?
Yes, a printed or foiled lid top is a nice touch, especially for tubes displayed standing up.
Can I get plain tubes to test my formula?
Yes, ask for plain sample tubes when you request your custom quote so you can pour and test before printing.
When would printed tubes arrive for a product launch?
Your push-up paper tubes take 4–7 working days to produce once the proof is approved, then 2–3 working days for free tracked UK mainland delivery.
What if the discs do not fit properly?
Send photos of the affected push-up paper tubes within 10 days and we will reprint or refund them.
