What a Kraft Tube Is and Who Uses One

A paper tube is made by winding layers of board around a steel mandrel until the wall is thick and rigid, then cutting it to length and wrapping it in an outer paper. With kraft tubes, that outer wrap is unbleached brown kraft, so the canister has the warm, slightly textured look that customers associate with small-batch and natural products, the same look as our printed kraft boxes.

Compared with a folding carton, a tube feels substantial. The lid slides on with a gentle push of air, the walls do not flex when squeezed, and the round shape sits comfortably in the palm. That tactile quality is why tea blenders, candle makers and skincare brands so often choose tubes for their hero products, even when a square box would be cheaper.

Tubes also reuse well. Customers keep them for pens, cotton buds, spices or keepsakes, which means your logo stays on a kitchen shelf or dressing table long after the original product has been used up.

Tea and coffee companies are the largest group, using kraft tubes for loose blends, gift sets and sampler packs. Candle makers use them for container candles and wax melts. Natural skincare brands use push-up tubes for lip balms, solid perfumes and deodorants. Bakers and confectioners use them for biscuits and shortbread, often with a greaseproof inner liner.

Artists and print studios use longer kraft tubes for posting rolled prints, and gift shops order them for socks, scarves and small accessories where a tube feels more special than a bag.

Lid and Base Options

The way a tube opens shapes the whole experience, so it is worth picking the closure before finalising the size; the push-up paper tubes are the odd one out, opening from the base.

You can mix and match: a telescopic lid on a kraft base with a contrasting coloured inner tube showing at the join gives a neat two-tone effect without extra print colours.

  • Two-piece telescopic: a lid slides over a base tube, the classic choice for tea and candles.
  • Three-piece with neck: an inner collar sticks up from the base so the lid sits flush with the outer wall.
  • Paper end caps: flat card discs rolled into the ends, suited to posting tubes and simple refills.
  • Push-up base: the product slides up from below, used for solid balms, deodorant sticks and lip balms.
  • Shoulder and neck style: a stepped design that gives a smooth, unbroken outline when closed.

Inner Liners for Tea, Salts and Balms

The inside of the tube matters as much as the outside. For dry goods such as loose-leaf tea, coffee or herbs, a foil or paper liner helps keep aromas in and moisture out, which is what the custom food tubes are built around. Many tea brands also pack the tea in a sealed inner pouch and then place the pouch in the tube, which gives the best freshness and lets the tube be reused.

Bath salts, powders and grains can sift into the seams of an unlined tube, so a smooth inner liner or an inner bag is a sensible addition. For solid balms in push-up tubes, the inner surface needs to be resistant to oils, and we will specify a suitable coated board.

If anything edible touches the tube wall directly, ask for food-contact grade board and liner on your custom quote. Otherwise, the inner pouch approach keeps things simple.

Printing on Kraft Paper Tubes with a Logo

Kraft is a brown base, so print behaves differently than on white paper. Dark colours such as black, navy, forest green and deep red look crisp and rich. Pale colours and pastels tend to sink into the brown and look muted, which can be lovely for a soft, vintage look but disappointing if you expected bright tones.

For brighter colours, we can print white ink first and then lay colour on top, or use a white paper label panel on the kraft wrap. Another popular approach is to leave the tube plain and add a printed band or wraparound label, which lets one batch of tubes serve several products.

Hot foil stamping works beautifully on kraft. A gold, copper or black foil logo on brown paper looks considered and premium, and it is one of the most effective ways to lift a simple canister without adding cost to the whole wrap.

How to Size a Tube

Start with what goes inside. For a candle, measure the vessel's diameter and height and add a few millimetres all round for easy removal, as the guide to measuring your product describes. For a pouch of tea, fill the pouch, flatten it to the shape it will take inside the tube and measure that. For balms, the push-up mechanism adds height, so tell us the size of the solid stick.

Then think about how the tube will be held and displayed. Tall narrow tubes look elegant but can topple on a shelf; short wide tubes are steady and suit candles. If your range includes several sizes, keeping one diameter and varying the height makes the family look tidy and keeps the lids interchangeable.

Making a Plain Tube Look Expensive

Kraft tubes have a quiet look by nature, and the brands that use them best lean into that rather than fighting it. A single foil logo, a neat typeset product name and plenty of bare brown paper often looks more confident than a wrap covered edge to edge in colour. Customers read restraint as quality.

Small details carry a lot of weight on a round pack. A contrasting inner tube in black, cream or a brand colour peeks out at the join when the lid is lifted. A ribbon pull tab under the base makes a tight-fitting product easy to remove. A debossed logo on the lid top can be felt as well as seen. None of these need full colour print, yet each makes the tube feel thought through.

Think too about the moment of opening. Tissue wrapped around a candle, a folded card with brewing notes tucked above a tea pouch or a printed message on the underside of the lid all reward the customer for opening the canister. These are inexpensive additions that are remembered long after the price is forgotten.

Choose the Closure First, Because It Changes the Tube Length

A kraft tube is measured differently depending on how it opens. A two-piece telescopic tube needs the lid to overlap the base, a three-piece tube hides a neck inside the base, and a push-up tube for balm has a moving base, so the closure has to be settled before the length means anything. Pick it, then measure the contents with any lid or wrapper on and add a few millimetres all round. Say what goes inside, because tea and salts want a liner, with food-contact grade liners available on request.

Send the contents, the size you think you need and the lid style, and a custom quote comes back by email within one working day, minimums low and quoted per job, simple tubes from £0.25 each depending on size and finish. A free proof shows the wrap laid flat with the seam, the lid line and the base marked, so you can see where the logo sits. Production takes 4 to 7 working days after approval and free tracked delivery reaches UK mainland addresses in 2 to 3 working days. Brands that post prints in the long sizes usually add paper tubes with end caps for those.

Kraft Paper Tubes Questions

What buyers ask before ordering kraft paper tubes.

Will pale colours show well on brown kraft?

Pale colours look muted on kraft because the brown shows through. For bright or light colours, we can print a white layer underneath or use a white label band.

Can a kraft tube keep loose tea fresh?

A foil or paper liner helps hold aroma and keep moisture out. For the best freshness, many tea brands seal the tea in an inner pouch and then place it in the tube.

What is the difference between a two-piece and three-piece tube?

A two-piece tube has a lid sliding over the base. A three-piece adds an inner neck so the lid sits flush with the base wall, giving a smoother outline.

Can you make push-up tubes for lip balm?

Yes. Push-up tubes let the balm rise from the base as it is used. The inside is made from coated board so oils do not soak into the wall.

How tight is the lid fit?

We set the fit so the lid slides on with a gentle resistance and does not fall off when the tube is lifted by the lid. If you need a looser or firmer fit, tell us.

Can I use one tube size for several products?

Yes. Many brands order plain or simply branded kraft tubes in one size and add a different printed band or label for each product.

Do kraft tubes suit candles?

They do. A short, wide tube holds a container candle securely, and a card insert stops the vessel moving. Customers often reuse the tube once the candle is gone.

Can I post kraft tubes without an outer box?

Sturdy tubes with end caps can be posted as they are, particularly for prints. For retail tubes with printed finishes, an outer mailer keeps the surface unmarked in transit.

Can the logo be foil stamped on kraft?

Yes, foil stamping on kraft gives a sharp, premium result. Gold, copper and black foils are particularly popular on brown tubes.

What if my tubes arrive dented?

Let us know within 10 days with photos. We will reprint the damaged tubes or refund them.
