Where a Single Tube Beats a Lidded Canister

Most people picture a paper tube as a base and a lid that slide together. That two-piece design is lovely for gifts, but it is not always what a product needs. A lidded canister uses more material, takes longer to assemble and suits products that the customer will open and close many times.

A one-piece tube is a different format for a different job. It is a single wound cylinder, and both ends are finished in a way that suits the product: a push-up base for a solid lip balm or deodorant, a sealed end and a paper tear strip for a single-use product, or folded paper ends for a rolled item such as a pair of socks or a printed poster. There is no lid to manufacture, no second part to match and nothing for the customer to lose.

For brands, that usually means a lower cost per unit than a two-piece tube of the same size, and a cleaner look, because the printed wrap runs uninterrupted from end to end. p2 The two-piece alternative is covered on our paper tubes with lids page.

End Closures for One-Piece Paper Tubes

The closure is what makes one-piece tubes so versatile. The main options are: p0 Push-up deodorant formats are shown in more detail on our push-up paper tubes page.

  • Push-up tube: a moving inner disc lets the customer push a solid product up from the base. Used for lip balms, solid perfumes, deodorant sticks and solid sun creams.
  • Paper disc ends: card discs glued into both ends close the tube completely. The customer opens it with a tear strip, a pull tab or a perforated end.
  • Crimped or folded ends: the ends of the tube are folded inwards, like a cracker, for rolled textiles, incense sticks or rolled prints.
  • Plug end: a card or paper plug pushes into one end and can be removed and replaced, a light alternative to a full lid.
  • Peel seal: a printed paper seal across one end, removed once, suitable for tea, spices or bath salts sold in a sachet inside the tube.

What Fits a One-Piece Tube

Light, compact products are the natural fit. Lip balms, solid perfumes and stick deodorants use push-up tubes. Incense sticks, matches and long candles use slim sealed tubes. Socks, ties and scarves can be rolled into a tube with folded ends for a gift-shop presentation, and rolled prints or maps are sold in long, narrow tubes.

Food producers use one-piece tubes for loose tea, spices, sugar sticks and confectionery, often with a bag or liner inside. In each case, the product is either used up in one go or removed once, so the customer does not need a lid they can put back.

Heavier products, such as candles in glass or bottles, are better suited to a two-piece tube with a stronger end cap. We will tell you honestly if your product needs a different format. p2 Rolled prints and posters usually go in our longer cylinder postal tubes.

Sizing Your Tube

Measure the product's diameter at its widest point and its full length. For a push-up tube, the inner diameter must match the stick or bar closely so it moves smoothly without wobbling. For rolled products, roll the item to the tightness you want and measure that roll.

Wall thickness affects strength and the internal diameter. Thin walls are fine for lip balms and incense; thicker walls give a more substantial feel in the hand and better protect rolled items from crushing in the post. Tell us how the tube will travel, whether on a shop shelf or inside a parcel, and we will suggest a wall thickness.

A plain sample tube is worth requesting for new products. It shows how the product sits, slides or pushes up before a full printed run.

For push-up tubes in particular, think about the fill process. If you pour a balm hot into the tube, the board and the inner disc need to cope with that warmth for the time it takes to set. Tell us how you fill and we will choose the right inner construction so the base does not warp or stick.

Printing the Wrap

The outer paper is printed flat, then wound around the tube, so full colour artwork, photographs and fine text all reproduce cleanly. Because there is no lid joint, a design can run all the way round in one continuous band, which makes the most of the tube's shape.

Kraft paper wraps give a natural, artisan feel and suit handmade cosmetics, teas and incense. White and coloured wraps show bright artwork at full strength. Finishing options include gloss or matt lamination, soft-touch for a velvety feel, foil blocking on a logo and spot varnish on a pattern.

Plan where the ingredients, weight and barcode will sit. On a narrow tube, a vertical band of information running up the back is easier to read than wrapping text round the curve.

If you sell several flavours or scents in the same tube size, one wrap design with a different colour band per variant keeps your shelf tidy and your reorders simple. p3 Kraft and white wraps are compared in the guide to print and finish options.

Who Buys Them

Our one-piece paper tubes are ordered by natural cosmetics brands making solid balms and deodorants, incense and home fragrance makers, tea and spice merchants, sock and accessory brands, artists selling rolled prints, confectioners and gift shops.

Small brands often start with a push-up tube for one hero product, then extend the same look across their range.

Event organisers and agencies also use them as promotional packs. A slim printed tube holding a branded pencil, a rolled flyer or a sample sachet is cheap to post, light to carry around a show and far more memorable than a loose leaflet pushed into a bag with everything else. p2 Tea merchants can see a lined version on our food tubes page.

Choose the End Closure Before the Diameter

A one-piece tube is defined by how it closes, not how wide it is. A push-up base for a balm, a tear strip for a single-use product, folded paper ends for a rolled pair of socks: each changes the tube's length and the wall it is wound from. Decide the closure first, then measure the product; for a push-up stick, that means the diameter and length of the stick from your own mould, not a supplier's catalogue figure.

If the product is heavy, say a candle in glass, tell us, and we will say honestly if a two-piece tube with an end cap is the better format. Send the wrap artwork with the information band running vertically, which reads more easily on a narrow tube. The custom quote arrives by email within one working day, from £0.25 for simple tubes, with the minimum set per job.

The free proof shows the flat wrap with the tube dimensions marked. Production takes 4 to 7 working days after approval and the tubes reach UK mainland addresses by free tracked delivery. Brands that later need a lid the customer can replace move to our paper tubes with end caps in the same wrap.

One-Piece Paper Tubes Questions

What buyers ask before ordering One-Piece paper tubes.

What is the difference between one-piece and two-piece tubes?

A two-piece tube has a separate lid that slides over the base. A one-piece tube is a single cylinder closed at the ends with discs, folds, a plug or a push-up base, so there is no lid to make or lose.

How does a push-up paper tube work?

A moving disc sits under the solid product. The customer presses the base and the product rises out of the top, much like a lipstick but in paper.

Can I put a liquid in a one-piece paper tube?

No. Paper tubes are for solids and dry goods. Liquids need a separate container, which could then be packed in a tube.

Are one-piece tubes cheaper than lidded tubes?

Usually yes, because there is no separate lid to make and assemble. The exact saving depends on size, closure and print.

Can food go directly into the tube?

We recommend an inner bag or a food-contact liner, which is available on request. Most tea and spice sellers use a sealed bag inside the tube.

How do customers open a sealed tube?

Common methods are a tear strip around the top, a pull tab on the end disc or a perforated end. We can show each option on the proof.

Will a lip balm push-up tube fit my existing mould?

Tell us your stick diameter and length, or send a sample, and we will match the tube's internal diameter to it. A fraction too wide and the stick wobbles; too tight and the push-up disc jams.

Can the artwork run all the way round?

Yes. With no lid joint, the wrap is continuous from end to end, which is ideal for patterns and panoramic artwork.

When will my tubes be ready?

Allow 4 to 7 working days from proof approval for production, then 2 to 3 working days for free tracked UK mainland delivery. A sample tube can be made first if the push-up fit is critical.

What does a one-piece tube cost?

Prices depend on size, closure and finish, with simple printed packaging from £0.25 each. Send your details for a custom quote within one working day.

What if some one-piece tubes are dented on arrival?

Report any damage or misprint within 10 days and we will reprint or refund the affected tubes. A photo of the dent is all we need.
