Custom Paper Jar Tubes

from £0.25 a tubePriced per job · low minimums

Custom paper jar tubes are short, wide card containers with a lid that lifts straight off, so the product inside can be scooped out like it would from a glass or plastic pot. They suit balms, scrubs, bath salts, loose tea and dry snacks for brands that want a pot shape built from paperboard.

A Jar Shape Made From Paperboard

Most paper tubes are tall and narrow, built for posters or a single bottle. A jar tube flips those proportions. The diameter is close to or larger than the height, the opening is wide enough for fingers or a spoon, and the lid sits low so the whole pack looks squat and solid on a shelf. That shape is what makes it a practical stand-in for a screw-top jar.

Each tube is spiral or convolute wound from layers of card, then wrapped in a printed outer paper. The base is a fixed card disc, and the lid is a separate shallow tube with its own disc top. A snug lid fit comes from the difference in wall thickness between the two parts, and we set it so the lid holds firmly but lifts off without a fight. Taller products in the same wound construction are listed as paper tubes with lift-off lids.

What People Put in Paper Jar Tubes

Solid and semi-solid products are the natural fit. A deodorant balm, a lip scrub or a whipped body butter can sit directly in a tube lined with a barrier paper, while softer creams usually go into a thin inner pot that drops inside the card jar. Dry goods are simpler: loose leaf tea, bath soak, dog treats, sugared almonds and spice blends all pour in and out cleanly.

Gift sets use them too. A jar tube holding a candle, a set of wax melts or a rolled scarf feels more considered than a folding carton, and it can be kept on a dressing table afterwards. Confectioners who fill the tube with sweets specify a food-contact lining as they would on paper tubes made for food.

  • Skincare balms, butters and scrubs
  • Bath salts, soaks and bath bomb crumbles
  • Loose leaf tea, coffee beans and hot chocolate flakes
  • Pet treats, confectionery and dried fruit
  • Small candles and wax melt sets

Sizing a Jar Tube Around Your Product

Start with the fill. Weigh or measure the volume you want to sell, then decide whether the product goes straight in or into an inner pot. If it is an inner pot, send us its outside diameter and height, and we add a small clearance so it drops in without rattling. For loose fills, we size the tube so the product sits a few millimetres below the lid rather than pressing against it.

Proportions matter for how the pack looks. A tube with a diameter of 70 mm and a height of 60 mm reads as a jar; stretch the height to 120 mm and it starts to read as a canister. If you are replacing an existing jar, measuring that jar and matching it is usually the quickest route.

Think about how the customer will use the last of the product too. A very deep jar makes it hard to reach the bottom with a finger, so balms and butters are best in shallower tubes, while loose dry fills can go deeper because they are poured rather than scooped. If you sell several fill weights, keeping one diameter and changing only the height gives a neat family look on the shelf and keeps lid sizes consistent. If the fill calculation is unfamiliar, our guide to measuring a product for packaging includes volume.

Linings, Board and Lid Options

The inside of the tube can be left as plain card, lined with a white paper for a clean look when the lid comes off, or lined with a foil or greaseproof-style barrier paper for oily or fragrant products. Food-contact grade board is available on request for tea, sweets and other edibles.

Lids can be a full telescope that covers most of the body, a shallow cap that sits on a raised neck, or a lid with a clear window disc so the contents show. A ribbon pull under the base or a tear strip around the lid can be added if you want proof of first opening. Plain brown versions without a printed wrap are sold as kraft paper tubes with a plain lid.

Printing the Wrap and Lid

The outer paper is printed flat before it is wound, which means full colour artwork can wrap the whole circumference. Keep the important elements, such as your logo and product name, within the front half so they are seen face-on, and use the back for ingredients, usage notes and barcodes. The lid top is a separate print and is a good place for a simple mark or pattern.

Finishes behave a little differently on curved card. Soft touch lamination gives a velvety feel and suits skincare. Gloss lamination makes colours richer for confectionery. Foil and embossing work best on the lid top, where the surface is flat.

Colour on kraft outer paper prints darker and warmer than on white, which suits earthy, natural brands but can dull bright pinks and blues. If you are unsure, your proof will flag it and we can suggest a white underprint or a switch to white paper. Barcodes should sit on a flat-looking area of the wrap with a light background so scanners read them first time.

Switching From Glass or Plastic Pots

In practice, a wound tube with a heavier wall is surprisingly rigid, and the weight of the product inside adds to the sense of quality. What changes is the way the pack is handled: paper does not like standing water, so a jar tube for a bathroom product should be lined and finished with a lamination that resists splashes.

It also helps to rethink the label. A glass jar usually carries a small sticker, while a printed wrap gives you the whole surface for branding, directions and a short story about the product. Use that space, but leave enough plain area for the design to breathe. Ask for a sample tube in your chosen size before a full run if you want to test it on your shelf or in your own bathroom first; we can quote for that alongside the main order. The free proof shown wrapped round the tube makes it clear how much of the design is visible from the front.

Decide Scoop or Pot First, Then the Diameter

The first choice on a jar tube is whether the product sits straight in the lined card or in an inner pot, because that changes the diameter you order. A whipped butter scooped from the card needs a lining and a 70 mm or wider opening so fingers fit; a cream in a 50 ml plastic pot needs the tube sized to the pot's outside diameter plus 2 mm. Measure accordingly and set the height so the lid closes with 5 mm of clearance over the fill or the pot. For a tea, the inner bag decides. Loose powders that need a shaker lid are served better by the powder paper tubes with a sifter insert.

Prepare the wrap as a flat strip with the lid artwork separate. Email the size, fill, lining, lid style, number of designs and quantity and a custom quote comes back within one working day, followed by a free design proof showing the wrap flat and the tube built. Tubes are made in 4 to 7 working days after approval and delivered free and tracked on the UK mainland in 2 to 3 days. Dented or misprinted tubes reported within 10 days are replaced or refunded.

Paper Jar Tubes Questions

What buyers ask before ordering paper jar tubes.

Can a cream go straight into a paper jar tube?

Thick balms and solid butters can go in directly if the tube is lined with a barrier paper. Softer creams and lotions are better in a thin inner pot that sits inside the card jar, which also keeps the board dry. We can size the tube around the inner pot you already use.

How tight is the lid on a jar tube?

We set the lid fit so it stays on when the jar is picked up by the lid but lifts off by hand without a struggle. If your product is heavy, tell us and we tighten the fit slightly. A shrink band or tear strip can add extra security for shipping.

What is the widest opening you can make?

Jar tubes can be made with a wide diameter relative to their height, so a squat pot shape is no problem. Very wide, very shallow tubes need a heavier wall so they stay round. We will advise on board weight once we see your sizes.

Can the inside of the tube be printed?

Yes. The lining paper can carry a colour or a simple pattern, so customers see something branded when they lift the lid. It is quoted as an option alongside the outer wrap.

Are paper jar tubes suitable for loose tea?

They suit loose tea well, especially with a foil-lined interior that helps keep aroma in. Food-contact grade board is available on request. Many tea brands add a sealed inner bag for longer storage.

Can I have a window in the lid?

A clear disc can be set into the lid top so customers see the colour or texture of the product. It works well for bath salts, sweets and tea blends. The rest of the lid can still be printed around the window.

Will foil stamping work on the curved body?

Foil can be applied to the wrap before it is wound, but fine detail is crisper on the flat lid top. For the body, we suggest bolder foil shapes such as a logo or band. Your proof will show where each finish sits.

Can I order several fragrances or flavours in one run?

Yes, separate designs can be printed in the same order, and each one is shown on its own proof. The quantity split between designs affects the price, so tell us how many of each you need when you ask for a custom quote.

How do I send you my product to size against?

You can send exact measurements of your inner pot or fill, or post us a sample if you are unsure. We check the dimensions and confirm the internal size on the proof before production starts.

What happens if some jar tubes arrive dented?

Let us know within 10 days with a photo and the order details. Misprinted or damaged tubes are reprinted or refunded. We pack tubes in cartons with dividers to keep them round in transit.

How soon after approving the proof will my jar tubes ship?

Production takes 4–7 working days after you approve the proof. Delivery is then free and tracked to UK mainland addresses, usually arriving in 2–3 working days.
