Custom Rigid Paper Tubes
Custom rigid paper tubes are thick-walled cylinders with a fitted lid, made for products that deserve something firmer than a folding carton. Tea blenders, cosmetic brands and gift makers use them because they feel solid in the hand and open with a slow, satisfying pull.

What Makes a Tube Rigid
A rigid tube is built from several layers of paperboard wound around a mandrel and glued together, then wrapped in a printed outer paper. The result is a wall typically 1.5 to 3 mm thick that does not dent when squeezed and keeps its round shape on a shelf. Compare that with a folded card cylinder, which can be pressed flat with two fingers, and you can see why the rigid version is used for premium goods.
The lid is a separate tube cut slightly wider so it slides over the body. Between the two we can fit an inner collar, a narrow band that sits inside the body and leaves a step for the lid to rest on. That collar controls how tightly the lid closes and produces the gentle air-cushioned drop that people notice when they open a well made tube.
Ends are closed with card discs, metal ends or a rolled edge, depending on the product inside and the look you want. Many customers order these alongside our printed luxury tubes, printed in the same colours.
Products That Suit a Rigid Tube
Loose leaf tea is the classic fit. The round shape holds a pouch or an inner liner well, the lid can be closed again after every use, and the tube sits nicely on a kitchen shelf long after the first cup. Coffee beans, hot chocolate flakes and spice blends work the same way.
Cosmetic brands use rigid tubes for serums, perfume bottles, lip products and candle jars. A shaped insert holds a glass bottle upright and stops it sliding when the tube is carried. Gift makers use longer versions for socks, rolled scarves, wine and spirits, prints and posters, and small hampers of chocolates.
Because the tube already feels like a keepsake, many customers reuse it for pens, cotton buds or craft supplies, which keeps your logo on view for months. Food brands selling tea or sweets in tubes may prefer custom paper food tubes.

Choosing Diameter and Height
Start with the item that goes inside. For bottles and jars, measure the widest diameter and the full height including any pump or cap, then add 2 to 4 mm to the diameter and around 5 mm to the height so the product slides in without scraping the print. If you are using an insert, we size the tube around the insert rather than the bottle.
For loose products such as tea, think in fill weight rather than size. A tube around 76 mm across and 120 mm tall holds roughly what a typical retail tea pouch holds, while a 100 mm tube suits a larger refill. If you are unsure, send us your current pouch and we will suggest a size that leaves a little headroom for the liner.
Very tall, narrow tubes look elegant but can be tipped over easily in a shop. Keep height under about three times the diameter for shelf products, or add a weighted base insert. Our steps for measuring your product help you pick the right diameter.
Wraps, Foils and Inside Print
The outside paper is where the branding lives. It can be printed in full colour, in Pantone spot colours, or left as a plain coloured or textured paper with only a foil logo. Matt and soft-touch laminates suit cosmetics and tea; gloss laminate gives strong colour for confectionery and gifts. Foil stamping in gold, silver, rose gold or copper wraps neatly around the curve when the artwork is set up correctly.
The inside of the tube can be lined with a contrasting colour, which is a small detail that customers often photograph. Embossing on the lid top, a printed disc on the base, or a ribbon pull under the lid all add finish without changing the structure.
For tea and coffee, the tube is the outer pack and the product goes into a sealed inner bag. Food-contact grade board is available on request if you prefer loose product directly against the inner wall. Our page on boards and finishes explains the wrap papers available.
Getting the Artwork to Wrap Correctly
Artwork for a tube is set up as a long flat rectangle whose width equals the circumference plus a small overlap. Logos placed near the seam can end up split, so we mark a safe zone on the template. Text should run parallel to the base unless you want a spiral effect, and very fine lines can soften slightly where the paper bends around a small diameter.
We send a free design proof showing the wrap flat and a rendered view of the finished tube, so you can check where each element sits before production begins. If you have a logo but no wrap artwork yet, Design Your Box with your logo and we will lay it out.
Quotes, Timing and Delivery
Send the diameter, height, lid style and quantity you have in mind, and we will email a custom quote within one working day. Rigid tubes are built to order, so minimums depend on size and finish; we keep them low and state them per job.
After you approve the proof, production takes 4 to 7 working days. Delivery is free and tracked to UK mainland addresses, normally within 2 to 3 working days. Tubes arrive assembled with lids on, packed in outer cartons to protect the wraps in transit. Any tube that arrives misprinted or damaged can be reported within 10 days for a reprint or refund. Our explainer on how packaging pricing works shows what changes the price per tube.
Small Details Worth Asking For
A thumb notch cut into the body rim makes a tight lid easier to lift, which helps older customers. A short ribbon tab glued under the lid does the same job and adds colour. If the tube will be posted rather than handed over, a shrink band or a printed paper seal across the lid joint shows the customer it has not been opened.
For ranges with several flavours or scents, one printed body with different coloured lids is an economical way to tell products apart on a shelf.
Think too about how the tube will be displayed. On a café counter or in a gift shop, tubes are often stacked in a pyramid or lined up three deep, so the front of each one needs the product name clearly visible from a metre away. A wide band of colour around the middle, with the name inside it, reads well from any angle. Small print such as ingredients, brewing notes or usage directions can sit on the back of the wrap or on the base disc, where it stays out of the way of the main design. Tubes that need an internal step to hold a bottle are covered by cardboard tubes with inserts.

Rigid Paper Tubes Questions
What buyers ask before ordering rigid paper tubes.
How thick are the walls of a rigid paper tube?
Most rigid tubes have walls between 1.5 and 3 mm, built from several wound layers of board. Thicker walls suit heavier products such as bottles, while lighter goods like tea work well with thinner walls.
Can the lid be made to close with a soft air cushion?
Yes. An inner collar with a carefully matched fit gives that slow drop as the lid slides down. We adjust the tolerance for your diameter so the lid is neither stiff nor loose.
Can I put loose tea straight into the tube?
Most brands use a sealed inner bag, which keeps tea fresh longer. If you want loose tea in direct contact with the tube, food-contact grade board is available on request.
Will a glass perfume bottle rattle inside?
Not with an insert. A card or foam insert holds the bottle by its neck or base so it stays centred. Send us the bottle dimensions and we will size the insert with the tube.
Can the logo go across the lid and body?
It can, but the lid and body are separate pieces, so artwork that crosses the joint may not line up perfectly every time a customer closes it. We usually suggest keeping the main logo on one part.
Do rigid tubes arrive flat?
No. Rigid tubes are made and shipped assembled with lids fitted, packed in cartons. Allow some storage space when the delivery arrives.
What is the tallest tube you can make?
Long tubes for bottles and posters are common. Tell us the length you need and the product inside, and we will confirm the most stable wall thickness for that height.
Can each flavour have a different colour lid?
Yes. Printing one shared body design and changing only the lid colour is a cost-effective way to run a range of teas or scents while keeping a consistent look.
Does foil work on a curved surface?
Yes. Foil is applied to the outer paper before it is wrapped around the tube, so it follows the curve cleanly. Very small foil text is best kept at a readable size for the diameter.
How long does production take for rigid tubes?
Production runs 4 to 7 working days after you approve the free design proof, followed by free tracked UK mainland delivery in 2 to 3 working days.
Can I see how the wrap will look before printing?
Yes. The free proof shows the flat wrap with safe zones and a rendered view of the closed tube, so you can check logo placement around the seam.
