Who Posts Long Rolled Documents
Anything printed on a large sheet that must not be folded ends up in a tube. Architects and surveyors send A1 and A0 drawings to clients and planning teams. Artists and illustrators post giclée prints and limited editions to buyers. Print studios dispatch posters, banners and large-format photography. Map sellers, schools sending wall charts, and event teams posting display graphics all rely on tubes too.
What they have in common is a sheet that is valuable, easily dented and longer than any normal box. A flat box big enough for an A1 sheet is unwieldy, expensive to post and easily bent across the middle. A rolled sheet in a rigid tube is compact, strong along its length and far less likely to be folded by a careless handler.
Tubes also travel well in the other direction. Clients returning marked-up drawings, galleries sending unsold prints back to artists and schools collecting entries for a poster competition can all reuse a tube with a push-in cap, provided it arrives undamaged. A sturdy tube that survives one journey intact is often used again and again, carrying your name each time. Tubes made as one piece with a built-in cap are listed as one-piece paper tubes.
Matching Tube Length to Paper Size
The tube length is set by the shorter edge of the sheet if you roll it the usual way, or the longer edge if you roll it lengthways. Most people roll along the long edge, which gives a slimmer roll. Add at least 20 mm to the sheet edge so the paper does not touch the end caps; caps sit inside the tube and take up some of the internal length, so we allow for them when we cut.
Diameter depends on how many sheets go in and how thick the paper is. A single poster rolls comfortably into a narrow tube, but a set of heavy watercolour prints or a stack of drawings needs a wider bore so the roll is not forced tight. Rolling paper too tightly leaves it curling for days after it is unpacked, which annoys anyone who wants to frame or pin it straight away. Our guide to measuring items for packaging covers rolled sheets and bore sizes.
- A3 posters: short tubes, narrow diameter
- A2 prints: mid-length tubes
- A1 drawings and posters: long tubes
- A0 plans: the longest tubes, wider bore for sets

Wall Thickness, Caps and Strength
Tube strength comes from the wall thickness and the quality of the spiral-wound board. A thin wall is fine for a light poster sent within the UK, but a long tube carrying several heavy prints can bow if the wall is too thin. For long lengths we generally recommend a thicker wall, which resists bending and protects the ends from being crushed when other parcels land on them.
End caps come in plastic or card. Plastic caps push in firmly and can be taped for extra security; they are easy to remove and reuse. Card caps give a fully paper look and can be printed or coloured to match the tube. For valuable artwork, a lockable cap or a strip of tape over each end reduces the chance of a cap working loose in transit. Shorter tubes with the same caps are shown on our paper tubes with end caps page.
Printing the Outside of a Tube
A tube is a rolling billboard as it moves through sorting offices, so printing your name along it is both practical and good marketing. Printed tubes are wrapped in a printed paper layer, which can carry a full-colour design, a repeating logo or a simple band of brand colour with your web address. Plain brown or white tubes with a printed label are the budget option and still look tidy.
Leave a clear area for the postage label and any handling marks such as 'Do not bend'. On long tubes we usually place the logo near one end and repeat it near the other so it shows whichever way the tube is held.
If you post tubes for clients as well as for your own business, such as a print studio sending finished posters on behalf of a customer, a neutral printed tube with a small studio logo near one end is a good compromise. It looks professional without overpowering the client's own work when the parcel lands on their desk. Upload the artwork through the free proof request and we will show the logo at each end of the wrap.
Packing Art and Drawings Properly
The tube is only part of the protection. Roll artwork image-side out on a sheet of tissue or acid-free paper, so that when the print is unrolled it curls away from the surface and flattens more easily. Do not use elastic bands directly on the paper; a strip of paper or tissue secured to itself holds the roll without marking it.
For prints that should not move at all, add a scrunched sheet of paper at each end so the roll cannot slide and hit the caps. Many artists include a printed card with care and framing instructions, which can be rolled inside or slipped under the cap. If you post tubes regularly, keep a stock of your branded inserts next to your tubes so every parcel looks consistent. Rolls of wrapping paper travel in the same way, in our gift wrap tubes for rolls.
Postal Limits for Long Parcels
Long tubes can fall into a larger parcel category or exceed a carrier's maximum length, which affects cost. Before choosing the longest tube, check the limits of the carrier you use most often. An A0 sheet rolled lengthways may push you into a different price band, while rolling it the other way in a slightly wider tube might not. We are happy to suggest the most economical length for your sheet size and carrier.
Square triangular tubes, which do not roll off a desk, are another option for shorter lengths; for very long rolls, round tubes are stronger. The rest of the tubes and canisters range covers the short round boxes for small gifts.
Check Your Carrier's Length Limit First
Before choosing a length, look up the maximum parcel length and the price bands for the service you use most. An A0 drawing rolled along its long edge needs an 870 mm tube; rolled the other way in a wider bore it may sit in a cheaper band. Then tell us how many sheets go in at once and the paper weight, since heavy prints need a wider bore and a thicker wall.
Mark a clear label area on any printed wrap. Send the sheet size, sheets per tube, wall thickness if known, cap type and quantity, and a custom quote comes back by email within one working day, with plain tubes from £0.25 and low minimums quoted per job. Printed tubes get a free proof of the wrap. Production takes 4–7 working days after approval and tracked delivery to UK mainland addresses is free, taking 2–3 working days. Dented or misprinted tubes reported within 10 days are reprinted or refunded. Shorter A3 and A2 rolls are covered on our cylinder postal tubes for prints page.

Long Postal Tubes Questions
What buyers ask before ordering long postal tubes.
How long should a tube be for an A1 sheet?
Roll the sheet along its long edge and the tube needs to be a little longer than the short edge of the sheet, plus space for the caps. We calculate the exact cut length when quoting.
What diameter suits several prints?
A wider bore lets a stack of prints roll loosely, so they flatten again easily when unpacked. Tell us how many sheets and the paper weight, and we will suggest a diameter.
Are plastic or card end caps better?
Plastic caps grip firmly and are easy to reuse. Card caps give a fully paper look and can be coloured. Both can be taped for extra security.
Can long tubes bend in the post?
Thin-walled long tubes can flex under weight. A heavier wall keeps a long tube straight and protects its ends.
Can you print my logo along the tube?
Yes. We print a full wrap or a logo band, usually placed near each end so it is visible whichever way the tube is held.
How should I roll a fine art print?
Roll it image-side out on a sheet of tissue, secure the roll with paper rather than elastic and add a little padding at each end. Keep the roll loose enough that it flattens again within a day.
Will a long tube cost more to post?
Long parcels can fall into a higher price band. We can suggest the shortest tube that fits your sheet so you stay within your carrier's limits.
Do you make triangular tubes?
Triangular tubes are available for shorter lengths. They do not roll off a table and stack neatly, but round tubes are stronger for long rolls.
Can I put an insert card under the cap?
Yes. A printed card with your details or care instructions fits neatly under the cap or rolled inside with the artwork.
Is there a minimum for printed tubes?
We keep minimums low and set them job by job. Plain tubes with a printed label are a good starting point for small runs.
A tube arrived with one end crushed. Was it the wall thickness?
Possibly, if a long tube with a thin wall was loaded under heavier parcels, which is why we suggest the heavier wall for anything over about 600 mm. Report dented, crushed or misprinted tubes within 10 days and we will reprint or refund them. If it happens on the way to your customer, a strip of tape over each cap and a wider wall usually stops it.
