Custom Art Print Shipping Boxes

from £0.25 a boxPriced per job · low minimums

Custom art print shipping boxes are flat, stiff mailers that carry an unframed print through the post without creasing, curling or catching a corner. We cut them to your paper sizes and print them with your studio name, so the parcel looks as considered as the work inside.

Why a Flat Box Beats a Tube for Most Prints

Rolling a print into a tube is fine for a large poster that will be framed anyway, but it fights against heavy fine-art paper. Cotton rag and thick matte stocks hold the curl for days, and a buyer who has to weigh their new print down under books does not feel looked after. A flat box keeps the sheet exactly as it left your table, which matters most for giclée editions, signed prints and anything with a deckled edge.

Flat boxes also stack neatly on a shelf while you wait for the courier, and they slide into a letterbox or a parcel locker when the size allows. For small print shops that post a few dozen orders after a launch, that speed of packing is a real saving. Fold the box up, slip the print in its sleeve between two boards, close the lid and it is ready. Many customers order these alongside our flat cardboard boxes, printed in the same colours.

Getting the Size Right Around Your Paper

Start from the trimmed sheet, not the image area, the way our guide to measuring for a box describes. Add a few millimetres on each side so the print can sit inside a cello sleeve or a backing board without being forced in, and so the corners are not the first thing to meet the inside wall if the parcel is dropped. Too much room is just as risky, because a print that can slide will rub and bend.

If you sell in several formats, it usually makes sense to choose one box per standard paper size rather than one large box for everything. A small A5 print in an A2 box looks lost and costs more to post. Many artists run three sizes: a small box for postcards and A5 work, a middle box for A4 and A3, and a larger one for A2 editions.

Depth is the other thing to think about. A single print in a sleeve needs very little height, but a print bundled with a provenance card, a thank-you note and a sticker sheet may need a little more. Tell us everything that goes in and we will set an inside depth that stops it moving.

Board Choices for Art Print Shipping Boxes

Most of our art print mailers are made from single-wall E-flute corrugated board, the thinnest grade among our board and finish options. It is thin enough to keep postage size down, yet stiff enough to stop a print bending when the parcel is handled on its edge. For larger sheets, or for framed and mounted pieces, B-flute or a double-wall board adds the extra stiffness that a big flat panel needs.

White board gives clean, bright print and looks gallery-like when opened. Kraft board has a warmer, handmade feel that suits printmakers, illustrators and screen-print studios. Either can be printed outside, inside or both.

  • E-flute for A5 to A3 prints that need to stay slim
  • B-flute or double wall for A2, A1 and mounted work
  • White or kraft outer face, printed in full colour or a single ink
  • Optional card pads cut to size to sandwich the print

Printing That Suits a Studio

Artists tend to want packaging that does not shout over the work. A small logo on the lid, a pattern on the inside and a short note on the inner flap is often enough, with a printed thank-you sticker holding the flap shut. Others use the box as a canvas in its own right and print a detail from the artwork across the outside. Both approaches work; the second simply needs higher-resolution artwork from you.

Inside printing is a nice touch for flat mailers, because it is the first thing a collector sees when the lid opens. A line such as how to handle the print, a care note about keeping it out of direct sunlight, or simply your signature and website gives the unboxing a personal feel without an extra insert. A matte laminate on the outside helps the box survive a wet doorstep.

Protecting the Print Inside the Box

The box does most of the work, but a couple of small additions make a big difference. A clear cellophane sleeve sized to the print keeps fingerprints off the surface. Two rigid backing boards, one either side, stop flex if the box is bent in transit. For limited editions, a sheet of acid-free tissue between print and board is a sensible extra that buyers notice.

We can print a 'Please do not bend' message on the outside panel if you want one. It will not stop every careless handler, but in our experience it does reduce the number of parcels that get forced through narrow letterboxes.

  • Cello sleeve or glassine envelope for the print
  • Backing boards cut to the inside size of the box
  • Tear strip for easy opening without a knife near the artwork
  • Peel-and-seal strip for quick closing on busy days

Packing Day Tips From Busy Print Shops

When a new edition sells out in an evening, the packing table becomes the bottleneck. Keep boxes flat in their cartons until you need them, then fold a batch of twenty at once so you are not switching tasks for every order, a habit that applies to any custom postal box you run. Pre-cut backing boards and pre-sleeved prints go a long way towards making each parcel take under a minute.

Label placement matters more than people think. Put the address label on the lid rather than across a seam, so the parcel can be opened without tearing it, and so a returned parcel can be relabelled cleanly. If you print a small panel on the lid that is left free of artwork, couriers' labels have somewhere tidy to land and your design stays intact.

Finally, keep a few spare boxes of each size for replacements. Even with the best packing, the odd parcel will be crushed by a heavier item in a van, and being able to send a fresh print the same day keeps buyers loyal.

Send Us the Trimmed Sheet Size, Not the Image Size

The most common mistake on a print mailer order is quoting the image area rather than the paper. A giclée printed at A3 is often trimmed with a border, so the sheet is the number we need, plus the thickness of whatever travels with it: a cello sleeve, one or two backing boards, an edition card. Write those down as a list and note how many prints go in one parcel at most, because a box sized for one sheet will bulge with three. If you sell several sizes, list each one; separate boxes nearly always post cheaper than one large box with padding.

From that list we send a custom quote by email within one working day, with minimums quoted per job so a first edition of fifty does not need a pallet of boxes. A free design proof shows the dieline with your artwork across the folds, production follows in 4 to 7 working days, and free tracked UK mainland delivery lands in 2 to 3 working days. For A2 and larger editions that need a deeper, stiffer box, compare the 24 x 24 x 4 flat kraft box as a starting point.

Art Print Shipping Boxes Questions

What buyers ask before ordering art print shipping boxes.

Will a flat mailer really stop my print from bending?

A correctly sized box in E-flute or B-flute board resists bending far better than an envelope with a card stiffener. Adding a backing board either side of the print gives it a second layer of protection. The key is a snug fit, so the print cannot slide and flex inside.

How much bigger than my print should the box be?

We usually add a few millimetres on each side of the trimmed sheet, plus whatever the sleeve and backing boards need. That gives the corners breathing room without letting the print shift. If you send us the exact sheet size and what goes with it, we set the inside measurements for you.

Can I use one box for A4 and A3 prints?

You can, but an A4 print will move around inside an A3 box unless you add a larger backing board. Most studios find it cheaper overall to run separate sizes, because smaller boxes cost less to post. We can quote both options so you can compare.

Can these boxes go through a letterbox?

Slim A5 and A4 mailers can be made to large letter dimensions if the contents are thin enough. A3 and larger boxes will go as parcels. Tell us if letterbox fit matters and we will design the depth around it.

Which board looks best for a printmaking studio?

Kraft board gives a natural, handmade look that suits linocut, screen print and risograph work. White board shows full-colour artwork more brightly and feels more like a gallery. Both protect equally well, so the choice is mostly about your brand.

Can you print one of my artworks on the outside of the box?

Yes, full-colour print covers the whole outer surface if you like. We need a high-resolution file, ideally at the final printed size, so the detail stays sharp across a large panel. The free proof shows exactly how the image falls across the folds.

Do you supply backing boards and sleeves too?

We can cut card backing pads to the inside size of your box so they fit without trimming. Sleeves and tissue can be added to the quote as well. Mention them when you ask for a custom quote and we will price everything together.

Is there a box for mounted or small framed prints?

Yes, a deeper box in B-flute or double-wall board suits mounted prints and light frames. We set the inside depth to the frame plus some corner protection. For glass-fronted frames, let us know so we can suggest extra padding.

How quickly can I have boxes for a print launch?

Production starts once you approve the free proof and takes 4 to 7 working days. Free tracked delivery to the UK mainland then takes 2 to 3 working days. If your launch date is fixed, tell us when you ask for the quote so we can plan the proof stage quickly.

A box lid arrived scuffed from your delivery. Is that covered?

Yes, scuffs, crushed corners and print faults on the boxes themselves are covered if you report them within 10 days of delivery with a photo. We reprint the affected boxes or refund them. Open each outer carton and check a few mailers from the top and bottom when the order lands, since damage usually shows on the outer layers first.

Can I add a tear strip so buyers do not cut into the print?

Yes, a tear strip is a good idea on art mailers because it keeps knives away from the contents. It runs along one edge and opens the box cleanly. We can pair it with a peel-and-seal strip so packing is quick too.
