Custom Black Corrugated Boxes
Custom black corrugated boxes give a shipping carton the presence of a retail box, so a parcel looks considered the moment it lands on the doorstep. They are made from fluted board with a black outer liner, strong enough for courier networks and printed with your logo in white, metallic foil or colour.

Why Brands Ship in Black
Most parcels arrive in brown. A black box breaks that pattern immediately, and the customer knows before opening it that the order came from a brand that cares about presentation. Fashion labels, streetwear brands, headphone and gadget sellers, and subscription services all use black outers for this reason.
Black also hides the scuffs and grubby fingerprints that build up as a parcel passes through sorting centres. A brown box picks up every mark; a matt black box tends to arrive looking cleaner. That matters for brands whose customers film unboxing videos or post the box on social media.
The effect depends on contrast. A single white logo on a black lid, or a gold foil mark, looks deliberate and expensive. The same logo on brown board would look ordinary. Smaller black mailers for accessories are covered on our black mailer boxes for small orders page.
How the Black Colour Is Made
There are two ways to make a corrugated box black. The first is to print the outer liner with a full flood of black ink. This gives a deep, even colour and lets us print other colours alongside it. The second is to use board whose outer paper is dyed black during manufacture, which keeps the colour consistent right through the liner, so a scrape does not show brown underneath.
Dyed board suits brands that want a plain black box with one or two printed elements. Flood-printed board suits fuller designs. The inside is usually left brown or white, though a printed interior is popular for unboxing: black outside, a bright colour or pattern inside.
Cut edges of the flutes will show the brown core on either version. Most brands accept this as part of the look of corrugated board. Lidded cartons in the same board are on our cardboard boxes with separate lids page.

Box Styles in Black Board
The regular slotted carton, with four flaps top and bottom closed with tape, is the workhorse for heavier goods and larger orders. It is economical and stacks well in a warehouse. For a cleaner presentation, the folding mailer with a tuck-in lid and dust flaps is the most popular style; it needs no tape to close in normal use and opens like a lid on a gift box.
Larger items such as small appliances or speakers can use a crash-lock base, which snaps into place when the box is opened out and speeds up packing. A two-piece box with a separate black lid suits footwear and accessories that need to be lifted out cleanly. Each of these styles is shown folded and flat in our guide to choosing a box style.
- Regular slotted cartons for bulk and heavy shipping
- Roll-end tuck front mailers for retail-style unboxing
- Crash-lock base boxes for fast packing lines
- Two-piece lid and base boxes for premium items
Single or Double Wall: Choosing the Board
Flute size controls strength and print quality. E flute is thin, around 1.5 mm, and gives a smooth surface for sharp print; it suits clothing, cosmetics and small electronics up to a few kilograms. B flute, around 3 mm, is a good all-rounder for heavier orders. Double wall board, combining two flutes, protects fragile or heavy goods and survives rougher handling, though it is bulkier to store.
If you are unsure, tell us what goes in the box and how much it weighs packed. We will suggest the board that protects it without adding unnecessary bulk or postage weight.
Remember that the box is also part of your postage cost. Double wall board adds weight and thickness, which can tip a parcel into a higher band with some couriers. For most apparel and accessories, a well fitted single wall mailer with a little tissue gives all the protection the goods need. Heavier kit such as speakers belongs in double wall corrugated shipping boxes instead.
Print That Reads Clearly on Black
White ink is the most common choice. On dark board it needs an opaque, slightly heavier layer, and we usually print it twice for a clean, solid result. Foil stamping in gold, silver or holographic finishes looks especially sharp on black. Spot UV varnish on a matt black box creates a subtle glossy logo that is visible only when light catches it, a favourite among minimal fashion brands.
Full colour print is possible on black, but colours look darker than on white board unless a white base is printed first. If your logo has several colours, ask us to show you how it will appear on the proof. A soft-touch laminate on mailer styles gives a velvety finish that shows fingerprints less than a gloss laminate.
Packing Tips and Keeping Costs Sensible
Use black or white tissue inside to keep the theme going, and seal it with a small branded sticker. A printed card or thank-you note on top of the tissue is the first thing the customer sees. If you print the inside of the lid, keep the message short; a single line reads better than a paragraph.
Courier labels look harsh on black. Some brands leave a light-coloured panel on the top or side so the address label sits neatly within it. Others print the lid and apply labels to the base. Plan where the label goes before finalising the artwork.
Black board costs a little more than standard brown, and every extra finish adds to the unit price. The trick is to spend where customers will notice. A foil logo on the lid is seen by everyone; a printed pattern on the underside of the base is seen by almost no one. Pick one hero feature and keep the rest simple.
Size matters too. A box that is only slightly too large wastes board, needs more void fill and can push a parcel into a higher courier price band. Measure your bestselling product packed in its tissue and size the box around that, rather than choosing a generous standard size.
If you sell several products of similar size, one well chosen black mailer for all of them often beats three different boxes, because one larger run brings the unit price down and simplifies storage. A plainer corrugated folding box style in the same black board suits orders where unboxing matters less.
Plan the Label Panel Before the Artwork
The ordering detail that trips up most black-box projects is the courier label. Decide now where it will sit, because once the lid carries a foil logo there is nowhere tidy to stick a 100 by 150 mm label. Either leave a pale printed panel on the top, or keep the lid clean and label the base, and tell us which so the proof shows it. Measure the internal size from your best-selling product packed in tissue, and give us the packed weight so we can pick between E flute, B flute and double wall.
Send the dimensions, style, quantity and a vector logo, and a custom quote comes back by email within one working day, with minimums quoted per job so one size can be trialled first. The free proof shows white ink or foil as it will print on the dark liner. Production takes 4–7 working days after approval and tracked delivery to UK mainland addresses is free, taking 2–3 working days with the boxes flat in bundles. Misprinted or crushed boxes reported within 10 days are reprinted or refunded, and shipping boxes in other board colours can be added to the same quote.

Black Corrugated Boxes Questions
What buyers ask before ordering black corrugated boxes.
Is the board black all the way through?
The outer liner is black, either dyed or printed. The fluted core and inner liner are normally brown or white, so cut edges show the natural board colour.
What is the best logo colour on a black box?
White ink and metallic foils give the strongest contrast. Spot UV on a matt black surface gives a quieter, tonal effect that many fashion brands prefer.
Will scuffs show on black corrugated board?
Dyed black liners hide scuffs well because there is no brown paper underneath the surface colour. Flood-printed boxes can show slight marks on sharp corners after heavy handling.
Can I print the inside a different colour?
Yes. A printed interior in a bright colour or pattern is a popular choice that makes opening the box more memorable. It is quoted as a second print side.
Where should the courier label go on a black box?
Many brands print a light panel for the label, or keep the lid clean and label the base. Deciding this before artwork is set saves a label covering your logo.
Is E flute strong enough for shipping?
For clothing, cosmetics and small electronics it usually is. Heavier or fragile goods should use B flute or double wall. Tell us the packed weight and we will advise.
Do full colour designs work on black board?
They do, but colours appear darker unless we print a white layer underneath first. The proof will show how your colours are expected to look.
Can I get a matt black finish with a glossy logo?
Yes. Matt black with a spot UV logo is one of the most requested combinations. The logo shows up as a shiny area when light hits it.
Do black mailers arrive flat or built?
Flat, in bundles, and each one folds up in a few seconds without tape. Dyed black board creases cleanly at the scores, so the corners stay black rather than cracking to brown. Store the bundles flat and dry until packing day.
Can I order two sizes in one order?
Yes. Many brands order a small and large size with the same artwork. We quote each size and include both on the proof.
Can I see the dyed black board before I commit to a run?
Ask when you request the custom quote and we will tell you what is possible for your quantity. The free proof shows how white ink or foil sits on the dark liner. If boxes then arrive misprinted or damaged, report it within 10 days for a reprint or refund.
