Custom Ice Cream Boxes
Custom ice cream boxes are printed cartons for blocks, multipacks of lollies, cones and bars, made from coated board that copes with the cold and the condensation of a freezer. They give small dairies and ice cream makers a pack that looks at home in a supermarket freezer and still carries their own character.

Cartons That Work Straight From the Freezer
Ice cream packaging lives a hard life. It is filled cold, frozen hard, moved through chilled transport, sits in a freezer cabinet with frost forming on it, and is then handled by shoppers with warm hands, which creates condensation. Ordinary uncoated card goes soft and wrinkled under that treatment. Ice cream boxes use a board with a moisture-resistant coating on the outside and, where needed, on the inside, so the carton keeps its shape and the print stays crisp.
The carton also has to read well through a frosted glass lid. Shoppers look down into a chest freezer or through a door, often from an angle, so the top panel and front need bold colour, a clear flavour name and a strong brand mark.
Packing speed matters too. Ice cream is usually boxed quickly on a cold line before it goes back into the blast freezer, so a carton that folds and closes in one smooth movement is worth a lot. We design tuck flaps and crash-lock bases that a gloved hand can work without fiddling. Tubs for scoopable ice cream are covered on the ice cream tubs with lids page.
Formats for Different Ice Cream Products
Not every ice cream product goes in the same box. Block ice cream and traditional bricks suit a rectangular tuck end carton, sometimes with an inner wrap. Multipacks of lollies, bars or choc ices suit a wider, shallower carton that holds four to eight wrapped units in a row or a grid. Cone multipacks need a box with a die-cut insert that holds each cone upright so the tops are not crushed. Ice cream sandwiches and mochi suit short, square boxes with a window.
If you are unsure which format suits a new product, start with the way shoppers will use it. Something eaten in one sitting suits a simple box. Something taken out one piece at a time, like lollies for children, suits a carton that reseals with a tuck flap so the rest stay frosted and tidy in the home freezer.

Board and Coatings That Handle the Cold
We use white folding boxboard with a moisture-resistant coating, which holds up to freezing and thawing without going limp. For products that sit directly against the board, such as an unwrapped block, an inner barrier coating stops the ice cream sticking and keeps fat from soaking in. Food-contact grade board is available on request, and we will talk you through which coating suits your fill.
Gloss lamination or a gloss varnish on the outside adds another layer of protection against condensation and makes colours look rich under freezer lights. A matt finish is possible, though it marks a little more easily with handling, so it suits brands that value a crafted look over high-traffic durability.
Coatings affect how glue sticks to the carton, so if you seal cartons with hot melt on your line, tell us. We leave glue areas uncoated so the bond holds even at freezer temperatures.
Sizing Ice Cream Boxes Around Your Product
For blocks, measure the frozen block or the mould it sets in, and add a small allowance for any wrap. For multipacks, measure one wrapped lolly or bar and decide how many go in each box and how they are arranged. For cones, measure the cone height, the diameter at the rim and the height of the topping, then decide whether cones stand upright or lie on their side in a tray.
Remember that ice cream expands slightly as it freezes and that wrappers vary. A few millimetres of clearance makes packing on the line quicker and stops corners bursting. If you also supply supermarkets or wholesalers, ask them for any carton size limits for their cabinets before you settle on dimensions. Our guide to measuring a product for a box covers wrapped and stacked items.
Designing for the Freezer Aisle
Most freezer cabinets are crowded with big brands in strong colours, so a smaller maker needs a clear point of difference. That might be a flavour illustration rather than a photo, a single bold colour per flavour, or a simple heritage look that tells shoppers the ice cream comes from a family dairy. Whatever you choose, make the flavour name the second thing people read after the brand.
Plan the panels with the cabinet in mind. In a chest freezer the top panel is seen first; in an upright freezer it is the front. Many brands repeat the brand and flavour on both, then use the back for ingredients, allergens, nutrition and storage instructions.
Illustrations often work better than photographs on ice cream cartons. Photos of ice cream can look melted or greasy under freezer lighting, while a crisp illustration of the fruit or flavour stays bright and appetising. Many artisan brands use illustration for exactly this reason. Inks and coatings that stay bright under freezer lighting are compared in the print and finish options guide.
- Top and front: brand and flavour, large and bold
- One colour per flavour for a tidy range
- Back: ingredients, allergens, nutrition and storage
- End flap: plain area for batch and best-before
Who Orders Ice Cream Cartons
Farm dairies making ice cream from their own milk, artisan gelato makers moving into retail, ice cream parlours selling take-home packs, vegan and dairy-free brands, and makers of lollies and frozen desserts all order from this range. Farm shops and delis that stock local ice cream sometimes order own-label cartons too, filled by a nearby producer.
Seaside and tourist parlours often sell take-home multipacks at the counter, and a printed box makes a much better souvenir of the visit than a plain carrier bag. Parlours that sell cones to take away use the ice cream cone holders for counters.
Measure a Frozen Product, Not the Mould
Ice cream products are sized frozen, and a lolly in its wrapper or a block in its film is larger than the mould it came from. Measure the wrapped, frozen item, count the units per pack and note how they are stacked, flat or on edge, because a multipack of six bars on edge needs a different carton from six laid flat. Tell us if the carton is filled on a line or by hand in a cold room, since a crash-lock base that a gloved hand can work matters more than any print decision.
Send the product type, the sizes, the units per pack and any artwork, and a custom quote comes by email within one working day, with minimums low and set per job so a small dairy can run one flavour first. The free proof shows every panel and any insert. Production takes 4 to 7 working days after approval and cartons are delivered flat by free tracked delivery to UK mainland addresses in 2 to 3 working days; cartons that arrive misprinted or damaged are reprinted or refunded if reported within 10 days. Scoop sales at the counter use the printed ice cream cups for scoops.

Ice Cream Boxes Questions
What buyers ask before ordering ice cream boxes.
Will ice cream boxes go soggy in the freezer?
Not with the right board. We use a moisture-resistant coated board, often with gloss lamination, so cartons keep their shape through frost and condensation. Uncoated card is not suitable for frozen products.
Can ice cream touch the board directly?
For unwrapped blocks we use an inner barrier coating so the product does not stick or soak in. Ask for food-contact grade board if the block sits directly on the carton. Many makers also use an inner wrap.
How do I pack cones without crushing them?
A cone carton has a die-cut insert that holds each cone upright by the rim. The box height is set above the topping so the lid never touches it. Send us cone measurements including topping height.
Which finish works best for freezer cabinets?
Gloss lamination is the most durable and makes colours look rich under freezer lights. Matt finishes are possible but show handling marks more. We advise based on where you sell.
What should go on the top panel?
In a chest freezer the top is seen first, so put the brand and flavour there in bold. Repeat them on the front for upright freezers. Keep the back for ingredients and nutrition.
Can I use one carton for every flavour?
Yes. Keeping one carton size and changing the colour and flavour name per design is the most cost-effective way to build a range. Each design has its own proof.
Can I add a window to an ice cream box?
Windows suit wrapped products such as ice cream sandwiches or mochi. Condensation can mist a window, so it works best on items that look good even slightly frosted. The proof shows the window size.
Where do I put the best-before date?
Most makers leave a plain area on an end flap for a printed or stamped date and batch code. We keep that area free of heavy coating so ink dries. Mark it on your artwork.
Are cartons supplied flat?
Yes, cartons arrive flat and fold up quickly on your packing line. Cone inserts arrive flat too and fold into place. We can include a folding sketch.
Can a parlour order a small run of take-home boxes?
Yes. Minimums are low and set per job, which suits parlours selling multipacks at the counter. A repeat order of an approved carton skips the setup stage.
What if cartons are misprinted?
Report misprinted or damaged cartons within 10 days and we reprint or refund them. Include a photo and the batch details so we can check quickly.
