Why a Lolly Needs a Proper Wrapper

A lolly that leaves the freezer unwrapped picks up frost, freezer burn and the smell of whatever else is stored nearby. A sealed film bag protects it from all three. It also keeps lollies separate, so they do not freeze together into a block in the bottom of a chest freezer, and it lets a café or shop sell them one at a time without handling the lolly itself.

Then there is the selling job. In a freezer cabinet, a shopper looks down at a row of wrappers rather than the lollies inside. A printed bag with a clear flavour name, bright colours and a picture of the fruit or ingredients is what makes someone reach in. A plain clear bag shows the colour of the lolly, which can work well for striking natural colours, but a printed bag usually sells better.

Wrappers also help at events. A wrapped lolly can be handed over from a cool box at a fete or sports day, eaten while walking, and the bag slid back over the stick to catch drips. Scooped portions sold beside the lollies use our ice cream cups for scoops.

Film Types and Freezer Performance

Ice lolly bags are made from flexible films that stay supple at freezer temperatures. Ordinary paper or thin film can crack in the cold, so we use films chosen for frozen food. Clear film shows the lolly; white or metallic film gives the brightest print and hides any frost on the surface.

Most lolly bags are printed on the reverse of a clear film and then laminated to a second layer, so the ink sits between the layers and cannot rub off or touch the food. This gives a glossy finish that stays bright even after weeks in a freezer.

For makers who wrap lollies by hand, a pre-made bag with an open end is easiest: the lolly slides in and the open end is heat sealed or twisted closed around the stick. Larger producers on wrapping machines use film on a roll that is formed and sealed automatically. Tell us how you pack and we will supply the right format.

Freezer storage also affects the film choice. Lollies kept in a chest freezer for weeks need a tougher film than lollies made in the morning and sold the same afternoon from a cool box, so tell us how long your stock usually waits before it is sold. The films are shown side by side in our film finishes compared guide.

Sizing Custom Ice Lolly Bags to the Mould

The size of the bag depends on your mould. Measure the widest point of the frozen lolly and its length from tip to the point where the stick leaves the ice. Then add the length of stick you want inside the bag, plus room for the seal. A bag that is too tight is hard to fill and can tear; one that is too loose lets the lolly slide around and leaves wasted film.

Freeze pops, the long thin tubes of frozen juice, use a different format again: a long narrow sleeve filled with liquid and sealed at both ends before freezing. These need a stronger seal, because the liquid expands as it freezes. Our method for measuring a frozen lolly explains the expansion allowance.

  • Mini lollies for children: short, narrow bags
  • Classic fruit lollies: medium bags with stick inside
  • Large premium lollies: wider bags for dipped or layered bars
  • Freeze pops: long thin tubes sealed both ends
  • Ice cream bars: wider flat bags with room for coating

Designing a Wrapper for the Freezer Cabinet

Freezer cabinets are crowded and often frosted, so designs need to work from a distance. Strong colour blocks, a large flavour name and a simple image of the main ingredient work best. Many brands give each flavour a different colour so shoppers can find their favourite at a glance.

The back of the bag carries the practical details: ingredients, allergens, storage instructions and anything else your food labelling adviser specifies. A barcode is needed if you sell through shops. If you change flavours often, a single design with a printed flavour sticker can keep costs down.

If your lollies are made with real fruit or have a striking colour, a clear window in the print lets the product show through. A window works best when the lolly itself looks appealing frozen, so test it with your own product first.

Keep small text away from the seal edges, where it can be crimped or cut off during sealing. Tubs in the same cabinet can carry the same artwork on our ice cream labels for tubs.

Who Orders Lolly Bags

Ice cream parlours and gelato makers who sell lollies alongside scooped ice cream are the biggest buyers. Juice and smoothie brands use freeze pop sleeves to sell frozen versions of their drinks. Farm shops and dairies with their own ice cream ranges order bags for lollies made from their own milk and fruit.

Event caterers and mobile ice cream vans use wrapped lollies because they are quick to serve. Cafés and soft play centres stock a small freezer of wrapped lollies for children. Healthy snack brands use them for frozen yoghurt and fruit lollies aimed at families.

Schools and nurseries sometimes order small runs of plain wrapped fruit lollies for school fairs, using a simple one-colour print with the school name.

Food Contact and Labelling

Lolly bags are in direct contact with frozen food, so the film must be suitable. Food-contact grade film is available on request, and with reverse-printed laminates the ink never touches the lolly. Tell us exactly what you are wrapping so we can specify the right material.

Labelling requirements for frozen desserts depend on your product and where you sell it. Your food labelling adviser will tell you what must appear; we will make sure it fits clearly on the bag. Parlours with a changing menu often add allergen labels for small runs to a plain bag.

Freeze a Lolly, Then Measure It

Lolly bags are sized by the frozen lolly, which is slightly larger than the mould because water expands, so freeze one, take it out and measure its widest point and its length with the stick. Add the stick length you want inside the bag and 15 mm for the seal, and that is the bag. Tell us the number of flavours, because each flavour is a different print on the same bag size, and how you seal: a hand sealer for a small parlour, a wrapping machine for a factory, which needs film on a roll. Choose clear film, printed film or printed film with a window. Artwork is one design per flavour with the ingredients and allergens on the back, sent as vector files, and the free proof shows each flavour at actual size. A custom quote comes by email within one working day, minimums are quoted per job so a small parlour can order a sensible run, and bags are made in 4–7 working days after approval with free tracked UK mainland delivery. Scoops sold from the same freezer go in our ice cream tubs for the same freezer.

Ice Lolly Bags Questions

What buyers ask before ordering ice lolly bags.

Will ice lolly bags crack in the freezer?

No. We use films chosen for frozen food that stay flexible at freezer temperatures.

How do I measure for the right lolly bag?

Measure the widest point of the frozen lolly and its length from tip to the base of the ice, then add the stick length you want inside the bag and 15 mm for the seal. Measure a frozen lolly, not the mould, because ice expands. We confirm the size on the proof.

Can I seal the bags without a machine?

Yes, pre-made open-end bags can be heat sealed with a small hand sealer in a second or two. For short-term use at a stall, the bag can be twisted around the stick and tied. A machine only matters at factory volumes.

Does the ink touch the lolly?

No, with reverse-printed laminate film the ink sits between two layers and never touches the food. The inner layer is a plain food-contact film. Surface-printed single films are not used for lollies.

Can each flavour have its own design?

Yes. Several flavour designs can run on one order, often with the same layout and a different colour per flavour.

Do you make freeze pop sleeves?

Yes. Long thin tubes are filled with liquid and sealed at both ends before freezing. We use a stronger seal for these.

Should I choose clear or printed film?

Clear film shows natural colours well, while printed film is easier to spot in a frosty freezer. Many brands combine print with a small window so the lolly colour still shows. The proof shows both options if you ask.

Is the film that touches the lolly food-contact grade?

Yes, the inner layer is supplied as food-contact grade film on request, with the print sealed between the layers. Tell us what you are wrapping, including any sauce or coating, so we specify the right film. It is noted on the quote.

Can I print ingredients and allergens on the bag?

Yes, usually on the back panel, laid out as your food labelling adviser specifies. Keep the allergen line in bold and the type above 1.2 mm so it stays legible. We set the text on the proof for you to check.

Can you supply film on a roll for a wrapping machine?

Yes. Tell us your machine and we will supply printed roll film to suit it.

Can a lolly bag be torn open easily by a child?

A tear notch near the top of the bag lets small hands open it without scissors. Tell us who the lollies are for and we will place the notch where it is easiest to find.
