Why a Printed Cup Matters at the Counter

Ice cream is one of those products that people photograph. A bright scoop in a well-designed cup gets shared, tagged and noticed, and the cup is often the only branding a customer carries away from your parlour or van. A plain white tub sends nothing back to you; a printed one keeps working long after the sale.

There is a practical side too. A cup gives customers something easier to manage than a cone, especially children, people walking and anyone ordering toppings. Cups also suit parlours that serve sauces, crushed biscuits or fruit, which would slide off a cone. Many shops offer both cones and cups, and the cup is often the more popular choice once toppings are involved. For cone service, printed ice cream cone sleeves carry the same branding.

Board and Coating That Copes With Melting

Ice cream cups are made from paperboard with a coating on the inside, and usually on the outside too. The coating stops melting ice cream and condensation from soaking into the board, so the cup stays rigid in the hand and the print stays clean. Without it, a paper cup would go soft within minutes on a warm afternoon.

The board needs to be stiff enough not to crush when a server presses a scoop in firmly. Thicker board feels more substantial and suits premium gelato shops, while lighter board keeps costs down for busy vans. Food-contact grade board is available on request, and we will explain the coating options so you can choose what suits your products.

Soft serve and frozen yoghurt bring their own demands. They are dispensed in a swirl that rises high above the rim and often gets loaded with toppings, so the cup needs a wide mouth and a firm rim that will not fold when a customer grips it. A slightly heavier board or a double wall cup handles that weight comfortably and feels more generous in the hand. For hot drinks served from the same counter, double wall paper cups use a similar construction.

Sizing by Scoops and Toppings

Ice cream cups are usually sized by volume in millilitres, and it helps to think in terms of scoops. A small cup around 120 ml holds a single kids' scoop. A 180 to 240 ml cup holds one or two regular scoops. Cups around 300 to 350 ml take three scoops or two with toppings, and 450 ml or larger cups suit sundaes and sharing portions.

Remember that scoops sit above the rim, so a cup that looks small may still hold a generous serving. If you serve toppings and sauces, choose a cup with a little extra headroom so they do not spill over the side. Test with your own scoop size, as different scoops vary considerably. Smaller tasting portions fit our small tasting cups for samples.

  • Regular cups for one or two scoops
  • Large cups for three scoops or toppings
  • Sundae and sharing cups for loaded desserts

Lids for Take-Home Tubs

If customers take ice cream home or order delivery, a lid turns a serving cup into a take-home tub. Paper lids printed in your design keep the look consistent and can carry the flavour name. Clear lids let customers see what is inside, which suits gelato displays and pre-packed tubs in a freezer.

Pre-filled cups sold from a freezer, such as single-portion tubs at a farm shop or café, benefit from a printed lid with a small blank area for the flavour and date. That way, one print run covers every flavour.

For delivery, choose a lid that fits snugly and press it down all the way round before bagging. A tub that is filled slightly below the rim seals more reliably than one heaped to the top, and it arrives without sticky marks on the outside. For family-size portions, our printed ice cream tubs take a larger scoop count.

Designs That Work on a Small, Curved Surface

An ice cream cup is small and curved, so simple, bold designs work best. A logo repeated around the cup means it is visible from any angle, and a strong colour or pattern makes the cup instantly recognisable. Illustrations of fruit, cones or playful characters suit family-oriented parlours, while minimal designs with a single colour and a neat logo suit artisan gelato.

Keep text to a minimum. Your name, perhaps a short line about what makes your ice cream special and a social handle are plenty. Avoid placing important elements near the base, where they curve out of sight, or at the seam where the cup is joined.

Think about how the cups look stacked behind the counter too. Many parlours keep a tower of cups on show beside the freezer, and a strong band of colour near the rim makes that stack look like a deliberate part of the shop rather than storage. If you sell several sizes, a different accent colour for each size helps staff pick the right cup without checking the base. Our guide to print and finish options explains the print choices in more detail.

Who Orders Branded Ice Cream Cups

Ice cream parlours and gelato shops are the main buyers, ordering printed cups in a few sizes to match their menu. Ice cream vans use them for scoops and soft serve with toppings. Dairy farms that make their own ice cream sell it in branded cups at farm shops and events. Cafés, dessert bars and frozen yoghurt shops use them for scoops and sundaes.

Event caterers and venues order cups for weddings, corporate events and festivals, often with a custom design for the occasion. Restaurants serving ice cream as a dessert use small cups for children's menus and takeaway desserts.

Seaside kiosks, park cafés and leisure attractions also order printed cups, often pairing them with branded cones so that every serving carries the same look whichever a customer chooses. Parlours that also serve cones can add twin scoop cone holders for larger orders.

Ice Cream Cups Questions

What buyers ask before ordering ice cream cups.

Will the cups go soft as the ice cream melts?

No, the cups have a coating that resists moisture, so they stay firm as the ice cream softens. Condensation on the outside does not affect the board.

What size cup do I need for two scoops?

A cup around 180 to 240 ml usually holds two regular scoops. If you add toppings, choose the next size up for extra headroom.

Can I get lids for take-home tubs?

Yes, we offer printed paper lids and clear lids. Printed lids keep your branding consistent, while clear lids show the flavour.

Can the lid show which flavour is inside?

We can print a blank flavour area on the lid so staff can write or sticker the flavour. One print run then covers every flavour.

Do you make small cups for tasters?

Yes, small taster cups are ideal for free samples at the counter. They can be printed with your logo too.

How should I design for a curved cup?

Keep designs bold and simple, and repeat your logo so it shows from any angle. Avoid important elements near the base or the seam.

Can an ice cream van order printed cups?

Yes, minimums are set per job and kept low, so vans can order a sensible quantity of one or two sizes.

Is food-contact board available?

Food-contact grade board is available on request. Tell us how the cups will be used and we will advise on coatings.

Is a double wall cup worth it for ice cream?

A double wall cup feels sturdier and keeps cold hands more comfortable, which suits premium gelato shops. It costs a little more than a single wall cup, so many parlours use it only for their larger sizes.

How much do custom ice cream cups cost?

Cups start from £0.25 each, depending on size and print. We send a custom quote by email within one working day.

Can I have a special design for an event?

Yes, event caterers often order a one-off design for weddings or festivals. Send your artwork and event date when you enquire.
