Custom Sock Labels

from £0.25 a labelPriced per job · low minimums

Custom sock labels turn a loose pair of socks into a retail product: a printed card that folds over the top as a header, or a band that wraps around the middle. Hosiery brands, knitters and gift shops use them to hang socks on pegs, stack them on shelves and give them as presents.

What a Sock Label Does

Socks are small, soft and hard to display without some help. Loose pairs end up separated, folded badly or shuffled into a heap by browsing shoppers. A sock label holds the pair together, gives it a shape that sits neatly on a shelf or hangs on a peg, and carries the brand, size and fibre information shoppers look for.

It is also the main branding piece for most sock businesses. Unlike shoes or clothing, socks rarely have a sewn label that customers notice. The card label is what tells people who made them, what they are made of and why they are worth the price.

For gift buyers, a good label does half the work of the present. A pair of socks with a smart card wrapped around them can be handed over as it is, without a box or wrapping paper.

Labels also make socks easier to sell wholesale. Shop buyers want products that arrive ready to put out, with clear sizes and a barcode, so their staff do not have to sort and fold. A well-made label shows that your brand understands retail and makes it easier for a shop to say yes. For a matching set, the same artwork also works on our printed garment labels.

Header Cards and Belly Bands

There are two main sock label styles, and many brands use both depending on where the socks are sold.

If you are unsure which to choose, think about where most of your sales happen and start there. p1 The band style is also used on our printed sleeves for socks, which cover more of the pair.

  • Header cards fold over the top of the socks and are stapled or stitched in place, with a hang hole for pegs
  • Belly bands wrap around the middle of the folded pair and close at the back with glue or a tuck
  • Hook cards are flat cards with a hook, with the socks attached by a plastic tag or thread
  • Insert cards sit inside a clear sleeve with the socks for a fully enclosed pack
  • Multi-pack bands wrap around two or three pairs together

Sizing Custom Sock Labels

Fold a pair of socks the way you want them displayed and measure the width and length of the folded pair. Header cards should match the width of the folded socks or be slightly wider, and long enough on each side of the fold to carry your design and information. A typical adult sock header is around 80 to 100 mm wide.

For belly bands, measure around the folded socks at the point where the band will sit, then add a little for overlap. Thicker socks such as wool hiking socks need longer bands than fine dress socks. Children's socks need smaller labels to suit their size.

If you sell several sock types, you can often use one header width for all of them and vary only the length or the printed information.

Test the fit before ordering in bulk. Ask for a few sample labels, fold them around real socks and see how they sit on a peg or a shelf. Small adjustments to width or fold position at this stage save a lot of frustration later. p3 Larger folded garments use the same approach as our hang tags for clothing.

Card, Print and Finish

Sock labels need to be thick enough to hold their shape on a peg but thin enough to fold cleanly. Card around 300 to 400 gsm is usual. Kraft card gives a natural look that suits wool, organic cotton and handmade socks, while white card shows bright patterns and colours at their strongest.

Print the front with your brand, the sock name or design and the size. The back carries fibre content, care instructions, a barcode if you sell through shops and your website. Matt lamination gives a soft, premium feel; uncoated card has a tactile, handmade look.

Foil on a logo or a spot gloss pattern adds a little extra for gift ranges, without making the label feel overdone.

Keep the fold line in mind when designing a header card. Text and logos too close to the fold can look cramped or get lost in the crease. Leave a clear margin either side and keep the most important information on the front face, where it is seen first on a peg. p3 Card weights are compared in the guide to board and card types.

Information Shoppers Look For

Socks sold in the UK should show fibre content, and shoppers also look for size and care information. Show sizes clearly, using shoe size ranges, and give the fibre content in percentages as supplied by your yarn or manufacturing partner. We print the information you supply exactly as given.

A short line about what makes your socks different, such as cushioned soles or reinforced heels, helps shoppers choose. Keep it brief: the label is small and the socks should do most of the talking. p1 The same information panel appears on our boxes for tights and hosiery.

Displaying and Selling

Header cards with a hang hole suit peg displays in shops, at markets and at trade fairs. Belly-banded socks look neat stacked on a shelf or in a basket, and are easy to post in a small mailer. Some brands use both: headers for wholesale and bands for their own shop and online orders.

For gift sets, a multi-pack band holding two or three pairs with a coordinating design makes an easy present. A small box or a printed bag can complete the gift.

Colour coding by size is a simple and effective idea. A different coloured stripe or corner for each size range lets shoppers and staff find the right size quickly on a crowded display, especially in busy shops where socks get moved around. p2 Gift sets of two or three pairs often go in an apparel box with a printed sleeve.

Fold a Pair, Pin a Paper Label to It, Hang It Up

Sock labels are judged on a peg, so test them there. Fold a pair the way you display them, cut a paper header to the width you have in mind, staple it on and hang it on a hook for a day. You will see at once if the card is too narrow for a thick hiking sock or too wide for a child's ankle sock. Measure the folded pair and the card that looked right, and send both figures with the number of designs.

Say header card or belly band, or both if you sell wholesale and online, and send the fibre percentages as supplied by your maker, because we print exactly what you give us. The custom quote arrives by email within one working day, with the minimum set per job so a knitter can order short runs of each design.

The free proof shows the label flat with fold lines and hang hole marked. Printing takes 4 to 7 working days after approval and the labels reach UK mainland addresses by free tracked delivery. Brands that box a pair for gifts usually add our printed boxes for sock gift sets in the same card colour.
