Custom Board Game Boxes
Custom board game boxes are rigid lid and base boxes wrapped in your printed artwork, with insert trays that give every board, deck, die and meeple its own place. They are made for independent designers, small publishers and crowdfunded games that need retail-quality packaging in a short run.

The Box Is the First Thing Players Judge
Before anyone reads the rules, they pick up the box. Its weight, the snap of the lid and the art on the cover set expectations for the whole game. A flimsy carton with soft corners makes even a clever design feel like a prototype, while a firm rigid box with a crisp wrap tells players the game has been finished with care.
That matters on a shop shelf, where a game competes with dozens of others for a browser's attention, and it matters at home, where a well-made box survives years of being pulled out on game nights. Boxes that split at the corners or warp after a few months are a common frustration for players, and they are avoidable with the right board and construction.
For crowdfunded games, the box is also what backers photograph and share when their copy arrives. A good unboxing photo is free publicity for your next campaign.
Lid and Base Construction
Most board games use a two-piece box: a base that holds the components and a lid that slides over it. The lid can cover the full depth of the base, which looks classic and protects the sides, or stop short to leave a band of the base visible, which makes the box easier to open.
Both parts are made from thick greyboard wrapped in printed paper that folds over the edges and into the inside. That wrap gives clean, sharp corners and a surface that takes full colour artwork, foil and spot gloss. A thumb cut in the side of the base lets air escape so the lid lifts off smoothly rather than sticking with suction.
Other styles have their place too. Small card games and filler games often use a magnetic flap box or a book-style box, and very light games can use a heavy folding carton with a telescoping lid to keep costs down. p2 Light card games usually go in a printed box for a card deck rather than a full rigid box.

Inserts and Component Storage
A good insert is what separates a box that people enjoy from one that annoys them. When components rattle loose, players spend the first ten minutes of every game sorting tokens. When everything has a place, setup is quick and nothing gets lost.
Card inserts are the most economical. A folded card tray with wells for card decks, a recess for dice and an open area for tokens covers most games. Rigid board trays with wrapped walls feel more premium and can carry printed labels for each compartment. For miniatures, a cut foam layer holds each figure safely.
Plan the insert around the rulebook and board too. The folded board usually lies on top, with the rulebook above it, so the insert's top edge should sit level with the base rim. That stops the board bowing and the lid pressing down on the components. p2 Our foam inserts cut for miniatures page shows how a figure layer sits under the board.
Sizing Custom Board Game Boxes
Start with the folded game board, since it usually sets the footprint. A board that folds into quarters to around 260 x 260 mm will need an internal box size a few millimetres larger. Then stack the components that sit underneath to find the depth: insert height plus board thickness plus rulebook.
Retailers have preferences too. Square boxes around 300 mm and rectangular boxes around 300 x 220 mm fit common shelf depths. Very large boxes can be hard for shops to stock, so it is worth checking with your intended stockists before fixing a size.
Shipping costs are another factor. A box that fits a standard courier size band can save a crowdfunded project a large amount across all backers, so we can suggest small changes in depth that keep you under a band without squeezing the components.
Weigh a finished prototype as well. A heavy game full of wooden pieces needs a thicker greyboard so the base does not bow when the box is lifted from one end, which is how most people pull a game off a shelf. p3 Thick greyboard grades are explained on the greyboard box construction page.
Artwork, Finishes and Shelf Appeal
The lid is your cover art, the sides are your spine and the back is your sales pitch. Put the title and art on top, repeat the title on at least two sides so it can be read when the box is stacked on a shelf, and use the back for a photo of the game in play, the player count, play time, age guidance and a short description.
Finishes give cover art depth. Matt lamination with spot gloss on the title and characters makes them catch the light. Linen-texture paper wraps feel classic and hide fingerprints, which is useful for boxes handled often. Foil on a title or logo works well for deluxe editions.
Print the inside of the lid and base too. A pattern, a map or a short welcome note inside the lid adds a lot to the first opening for very little extra cost. p2 If you want the title in metallic, the foil and embossed box finishes page shows what each foil looks like on a dark wrap.
Who We Make Game Boxes For
Independent designers producing a first print run, small publishers expanding a range, crowdfunded projects fulfilling backer rewards, escape room and puzzle game makers, educational companies making classroom games and businesses creating branded games for training and team events all order these boxes.
We also make expansion boxes and storage boxes sized to sit alongside the core game, so a whole range shares the same look and stacks neatly on a shelf.
Tabletop cafés commissioning house games for their regulars order them as well, usually in small, carefully finished runs. p2 Games sent to backers in the post usually travel inside outer shipping boxes sized for games so the wrap stays unmarked.
Prototype the Insert in Card Before the Box Is Wrapped
Game boxes are usually sized correctly; it is the insert that gets redesigned. Before you ask for a quote, cut a rough insert from spare card, load your real decks, dice and tokens into it and close a lid over it. If the board bows or the lid sits proud, the depth needs another few millimetres, and finding that out now costs nothing. Send us that mock-up's measurements alongside the component list.
Then tell us how many backers or retail units you need and which courier size band you want to stay under; a small change in depth can keep a crowdfunded game in a cheaper band across every parcel. The custom quote is emailed within one working day, with minimums set per job so a first run of a few hundred is normal.
The free proof includes dielines for lid, base and insert. Production is 4 to 7 working days once you approve it, then free tracked UK mainland delivery. Publishers that sell a card-only expansion often order tuck boxes for card decks in the same artwork so the expansion sits beside the core box.

Board Game Boxes Questions
What buyers ask before ordering board game boxes.
What size box do I need for my game?
Start with the folded board size for the footprint, then add the height of the insert, board and rulebook for the depth. Send your component list and we suggest a size with a few millimetres of clearance.
Should the lid cover the full depth of the base?
A full-depth lid looks classic and protects the sides fully. A shorter lid leaves a printed band of the base visible and is easier to lift, which some designers prefer for smaller games.
Why do some game boxes have a thumb cut?
The thumb cut lets air escape when the lid is lifted, so it does not stick with suction. It also gives a finger grip on tightly fitting lids.
Can you make an insert for cards, dice and tokens?
Yes. We design a card or rigid insert with wells for each deck, recesses for dice and open areas for tokens. Foam layers are available for miniatures.
Can I order a short run for crowdfunding backers?
Yes, minimums are quoted per job and can be low. Many designers order a first run for backers and reorder for retail later.
Which finish gives board game cover art the most depth?
Matt lamination across the lid with spot gloss on the title and key characters makes the art catch the light while the background stays flat. Foil on the logo suits a deluxe edition, and a linen-texture wrap adds a tactile feel for games handled often.
Can the box fit a standard courier size band?
We can suggest small changes to depth or footprint so the box fits a cheaper courier band. Tell us the band you are aiming for when you request a quote.
Can you make matching expansion boxes?
Yes, expansion and storage boxes can be made to match the core box style and printed in the same finish, so the range looks consistent. Send the core box size and we match the footprint so expansions stack on top.
Will a linen wrap show fingerprints?
Linen-texture paper hides fingerprints well, which is why it is popular for games handled often. It also gives a classic, tactile feel.
Can the inside of a game box lid carry a map or a welcome note?
Yes. The wrapped paper covers the inside of the lid and base, so a map, a pattern or a short note from the designer prints there at little extra cost. Keep the text clear of the corners, where the wrap folds.
Will I see the insert dielines before the game boxes are made?
Yes. The free proof includes dielines for the lid, the base and every insert tray, drawn at scale so you can lay your components over them. Nothing is cut until you have approved all three.
