The Box That Lives With the Deck

A tuck box is not packaging that gets thrown away. It travels with the deck in a pocket, a game bag or a magician's case, and it is opened and closed every time the cards come out. That means it has to fit closely enough that the deck does not slide out when the box is upside down, open easily enough that people do not tear the flap, and hold up to being handled for months or years.

For collectors and card designers, the tuck box is also the face of the deck. Custom playing card decks are often bought as much for their artwork as for play, and collectors judge the box as carefully as the cards: the board, the print, the foil, the seal. A well-made tuck box can make an independent deck feel as polished as one from an established publisher. Decks sold with tokens or a board move into our custom game boxes for larger sets.

Sizing to Poker, Bridge, Tarot and Custom Cards

The tuck box is sized to the deck, so start with the card size and the deck thickness. Poker-size cards, at 63 x 88 mm, are the most common for playing cards and many games. Bridge-size cards are slimmer at 57 x 88 mm. Tarot cards are larger, typically around 70 x 120 mm, and oracle decks vary widely. Mini decks and custom game cards come in every size imaginable.

Deck thickness depends on card count and card stock. A standard deck with jokers and an ad card is a certain thickness, but a heavier stock or a deck with extra cards can be noticeably thicker. Measure a real, finished deck squared up, or send us a sample, and we will size the box with just enough clearance for the deck to slide in and out without being loose.

Sleeved cards change everything. Many board game players put their cards in protective sleeves, which add width, height and a surprising amount of thickness to a deck. If your game is aimed at players who sleeve, consider a box sized for sleeved cards, or offer a deluxe version that fits them. Players remember games whose boxes still close after sleeving, and they remember the ones that do not. Our guide on how to measure a squared deck explains why thickness varies by stock.

Tuck Flaps, Thumb Notches and Seals

The classic playing card box has a tuck flap at the top and a thumb notch cut into the front and back so the deck can be gripped and slid out. The flap tucks behind the front panel, and a well-cut tuck holds firmly without needing to be forced. A tuck flap with a small lock tab adds security for decks carried in pockets.

Collectors often expect a sealed deck. A printed paper seal or a clear sticker across the flap shows that the deck is unopened. Some publishers print a numbered or decorative seal as part of the design, which collectors treasure. Cello wrapping each box is another option for retail.

Board, Print and Premium Finishes

Tuck boxes are made from folding board, usually a smooth white board that prints crisply. A heavier board feels more premium and stands up to handling, while a lighter board keeps costs down for game components and promotional decks. Black board, kraft board and textured papers add character for specialist decks.

Custom deck designers often go to town on finishes. Hot foil in gold, silver or a coloured foil picks out logos, borders and illustrations. Embossing and debossing add a tactile texture. Spot UV adds gloss to selected areas over a matt base. Printing on the inside of the box, often a pattern or a message, is a detail collectors notice. Combining two or three finishes on a single box is common in collector decks, though restraint often looks more elegant.

Card backs and box design usually work best when they speak to each other. Repeating a motif from the card back on the box, or using the same border and colour palette, makes the deck feel like a complete object. Many designers place the main illustration on the front panel, a simplified version of the card back on the rear panel and the deck name along the spine, so the box reads clearly when stacked on a shelf with others. You can see foil and embossing compared on dark board in our finish guide.

Game Publishers and Magicians

Board and card game publishers use tuck boxes for card decks within a game, for expansions sold separately and for standalone card games. Clear labelling of the game name, deck name or expansion number on the box helps players keep track. A slightly larger box can hold a deck with a rules leaflet folded inside.

Magicians and card performers often want specific features: a box that opens smoothly in one hand, a design that looks like a normal deck, or a box that matches a gimmicked deck. If your deck is for performance, tell us how it will be handled and we will suggest a construction that suits the routine. Publishers who also print a board game keep the same finishes on their board game boxes for publishers.

Crowdfunded and Independent Decks

Independent designers often launch decks through crowdfunding, where the box is the image backers see first. A free design proof lets you check the artwork across the flaps and panels before production. Low minimums mean a modest first run is practical, and you can reorder the same box for later printings or produce a limited edition with a different foil.

If you are offering several editions, such as a standard deck and a limited gilded edition, the same box shape with different finishes keeps production simple while giving collectors a reason to buy both.

Shipping backers is the final step to plan. A single tuck box is small and easily crushed in a padded envelope, so most campaigns post decks inside a slim corrugated mailer or a rigid card wallet. If backers can choose several decks, a mailer sized for one, two or three boxes keeps fulfilment simple and stops corners getting bent on the way to collectors who care about condition.

Square Up a Finished Deck and Measure It, or Post It to Us

A tuck box is sized to the deck, and two decks of the same card count can differ in thickness because of the stock, so the measurement has to come from a real deck. Square it up, measure length, width and thickness, or post one to us. Tell us whether a rules leaflet goes in with the cards, because that adds depth, and whether the box needs a thumb notch, a seal or a tear strip. Collector decks lean on finishes: foil, embossing and inside print are expected, and combining two of them is normal. Crowdfunded runs should fix the card stock before the box is quoted. Publishers with a boxed game usually match the tuck box to their larger custom game box.

Send the card size, deck thickness or a sample, the style, board, finishes and artwork, and a custom quote comes by email within one working day, with minimums kept low for independent decks. The free proof shows every panel and flap. Boxes are made in 4 to 7 working days after approval, arrive flat by tracked courier to UK mainland addresses, and misaligned foil or damage reported within 10 days is reprinted or refunded.

Playing Card Tuck Boxes Questions

What buyers ask before ordering playing card tuck boxes.

What size tuck box fits a poker deck?

Poker cards are 63 x 88 mm. The box is a few millimetres larger to let the deck slide in and out, with depth set by the deck thickness.

How do you measure deck thickness?

Square up a finished deck and measure its thickness, or send us a sample. Card stock and card count both affect it.

Can the box hold a rules leaflet?

Yes. We can add a little depth so a folded leaflet sits with the deck.

Can I add a seal to show the deck is unopened?

Yes. Printed paper seals or clear stickers across the flap are common, and some publishers print decorative numbered seals.

Which finishes do collectors expect?

Foil, embossing and inside print are popular on collector decks. Combining two or three finishes is common but restraint often looks more elegant.

Do you make boxes for tarot cards?

Yes. Tarot boxes are larger and deeper, and we size them from your deck or a sample.

Can a tuck box hold two decks?

Yes. A two-deck box holds a pair of decks side by side, popular for bridge and some games.

Can the inside of a playing card tuck box carry a pattern collectors will notice?

Yes. Inside print is a detail collectors look for and often carries a pattern, a message or a card back design, and on a one-piece tuck it adds very little to the cost.

Are tuck boxes strong enough for daily use?

A heavier board stands up well to handling. We can suggest a board weight based on how the deck will be used.

Can I order a small run for a crowdfunding campaign?

Minimums are low and quoted per job, which suits first runs for independent decks.

What if the foil is misaligned on arrival?

Report any misprints or damage within 10 days of delivery and we will reprint or refund the affected boxes.
