Why Puzzle Makers Choose a Tube

Jigsaw puzzles have been sold in flat rectangular boxes for as long as most of us can remember. That makes a tube instantly different. On a gift shop shelf, a row of cylinders catches the eye; in a parcel, a tube feels special and is easy to wrap; on a coffee table, it looks good enough to leave out.

The round surface also suits puzzle artwork. The full image can run all the way around the tube, so a landscape or a pattern wraps continuously and invites people to turn the tube in their hands. That small action often turns browsing into buying.

Tubes are also practical. A paperboard canister with a fitted lid closes securely, stores the pieces between sessions and stacks neatly in a cupboard. Many puzzle lovers keep the tube long after the puzzle is finished. Puzzle brands that prefer a flat pack can still use our printed board game boxes.

Construction Options

A puzzle tube is made from wound paperboard with a printed paper wrap. The choices you make on the ends and lid change the feel and the price. The same build is used on our paper tubes with end caps.

  • Two-piece tube: a base and a deep push-on lid. The classic and most popular option, giving a satisfying slow slide when opened.
  • Three-piece tube: a base, an inner neck and a lid that sits flush with the base, giving a clean outer surface for continuous artwork.
  • Tube with a metal or paper end cap: a flat end on the base gives a crisp look and supports heavier piece counts.
  • Tube with a window lid: a clear disc in the lid shows a glimpse of the pieces, which works well for wooden puzzles.
  • Tube with a reference print inside: a folded copy of the picture tucked inside the lid, so solvers do not need to keep turning the tube.

Sizing Jigsaw Puzzle Tubes by Piece Count

The size of a tube depends on the volume of the pieces in their bag, not the finished size of the puzzle. Thicker board and larger pieces take more space. The best approach is to bag one finished puzzle, shake it into a loose cylinder shape and measure it, then add a little room so the bag slides in and out without catching.

As a rough guide, small children's puzzles fit happily in a slim tube around 60 to 75 mm wide. Mid-sized adult puzzles usually need something nearer 80 to 90 mm wide and 200 mm or more tall. Large puzzles and wooden puzzles need a wider tube, and some makers prefer a squat, wide tube that pours pieces out easily onto the table.

Send us a bagged sample if you can. We will confirm the internal diameter and height so the fit is right before you approve the proof.

Weight is worth a thought too. A tall tube full of thick pieces can feel heavy in the hand, so for very large puzzles we often suggest a stronger wall and a flat end cap on the base, which keeps the tube from denting if it is dropped on its end in transit or knocked off a shelf. Our guide to measuring products for packaging shows how to take inside sizes.

Printing the Wrap

The paper wrap is printed flat, then laminated and wound around the tube, so full colour images reproduce with real depth. A gloss lamination makes photographic puzzles vivid; a matt or soft-touch lamination suits illustrated and artistic designs and avoids glare in shop lighting.

Plan where the seam falls. On a two-piece tube, the lid and base each have their own wrap, so the image will break at the lid edge. Some artists design for this, putting a border or the title around the lid. A three-piece flush tube gives a cleaner run, though the lid line will still be visible.

Add the essentials somewhere on the wrap: puzzle title, artist or brand, piece count, finished size and any age guidance. A spine-style band running up the side is a neat solution that keeps the main image clear. For gift editions, luxury gift tubes for special editions add a more premium wrap.

Finishes That Feel Special

Because a puzzle is often given as a present, finishing touches pay off. Foil blocking on the title or the artist's signature adds a quietly premium feel. Embossing can raise part of the image so it catches light, and a spot gloss over a key part of the picture draws the eye.

The inside of the lid is an overlooked space. A printed message, the story behind the image or a small map for location-themed puzzles gives buyers something to discover. A ribbon pull on the inside of the lid helps open snug tubes without struggling.

For wooden puzzles, many makers choose a kraft finish with simple foil or one-colour print, which reflects the craftsmanship of the pieces.

Who Uses Puzzle Tubes

Independent puzzle publishers, artists selling their work as puzzles, wooden puzzle makers, museum and gallery shops, tourist attractions and photo gift businesses all use tubes. They are also popular for promotional puzzles, where a company turns a brand image or product photo into a puzzle for clients.

Escape room and mystery game makers use puzzle tubes to hold clue puzzles, and educational suppliers use small tubes for classroom puzzle sets that stack neatly on a shelf.

Puzzle subscription services like tubes because they post well. A cylinder fits a slim mailing box or can be sent on its own with a label, and it survives the post better than a flat box with thin corners, which can crush and arrive looking tired. Games shops that stock other titles often order custom game boxes for retail too.

Ordering and Turnaround

Send us your tube dimensions or a sample bag of pieces, the quantity and your artwork, and a custom quote will be in your inbox within one working day. Minimums are kept low and quoted per job, so an artist releasing a small limited edition can order a sensible quantity.

Your free design proof shows the flat wraps for the lid and base, with the seam and lid line marked. Tubes are made in 4 to 7 working days from approval, then travel free and tracked to UK mainland addresses in a further 2 to 3 working days. Jigsaw Puzzle Tubes Questions

What buyers ask before ordering jigsaw puzzle tubes.

How do I know what size tube my puzzle needs?

Bag a finished puzzle and measure it as a loose cylinder, then add a little room. Sending us a bagged sample is the most reliable way to get the size right.

Can the puzzle picture wrap all the way round?

Yes, the full image can run around the tube. The lid edge will break the image slightly, so we mark it on the proof so you can plan around it.

Will the lid stay on during posting?

Yes, our lids are sized for a snug friction fit. For posting, a small sticker seal across the lid line adds extra security and shows the tube has not been opened.

Can I include a reference picture inside?

Yes, a printed reference sheet folded into the lid is a popular extra, so solvers can see the image without turning the tube.

Do you make tubes for wooden puzzles?

We do, often in a wider, shorter shape so the pieces pour out easily. Kraft finishes with foil or one-colour print suit wooden puzzles well.

Where should the piece count go?

Many makers use a narrow band running up the side of the tube for the title, piece count, finished size and age guidance, keeping the main image clear.

Can the tubes have a clear window?

Yes, a clear disc in the lid gives a glimpse of the pieces. It works especially well with colourful or wooden pieces.

Is a tube more expensive than a flat puzzle box?

Tubes involve more steps to make, so they usually cost more per unit than a simple flat box. Many makers find the shelf impact and gift appeal justify it.

How long does a puzzle tube order take?

Once the free proof is signed off, your puzzle tubes take 4 to 7 working days to make and 2 to 3 more to reach you by free tracked UK mainland delivery.

What information do you need to price puzzle tubes?

Send us the size or a sample, the quantity and your artwork. Your custom quote for the tubes will arrive by email within one working day.

What if tubes arrive dented?

Report any damage or misprint within 10 days with a photo and we will reprint or refund the affected tubes.
