What Heavy Drivetrain Parts Ask of a Box

Transmission parts are not like most retail goods. A synchroniser ring set, a clutch kit or a set of gears can be surprisingly heavy for its size, and the weight is concentrated in hard, sharp-edged metal. A standard carton chosen off the shelf may bulge, split at the corners or let parts punch through when the box is dropped onto a concrete floor.

The box also has to survive a supply chain of warehouses, vans and workshop benches, where it may be stacked under other stock or handled with oily gloves. And it must make life easy for the technician who opens it: every component visible, nothing loose in the bottom, and the part number readable at a glance.

Made-to-size packaging solves these problems. When the box fits the kit, there is less empty space for parts to move into, less void fill to buy, and a smaller parcel to ship. Smaller drivetrain components, such as bearings, have their own custom printed bearing boxes.

Board Strength and Construction

For lighter components such as seals, gaskets, bearings and small sensors, a printed folding carton in heavy boxboard is often enough. For gear sets, clutch assemblies, flywheels and chain kits, corrugated board is the standard choice. Single wall E-flute or B-flute suits most kits, while double wall board is used when parts are very heavy or will be stacked high in storage.

Construction matters as much as board. Crash-lock bases carry weight better than tuck bottoms and fold up quickly at the packing bench. Roll end front tuck boxes give a clean, retail-friendly presentation and a strong double wall at the sides. For the heaviest items, a full overlap container or a box with reinforced ends spreads the load.

Think about the whole journey when choosing board. A box that only moves from your warehouse to a motor factor on a pallet faces less risk than one sent by courier to a home mechanic, where it may be dropped, thrown and stacked under heavier parcels. If you sell online direct to customers, either specify a stronger board or plan an outer shipping carton for each order.

Inserts That Organise a Kit

A timing chain kit can contain a chain, guides, tensioner, sprockets, bolts and seals. Tipped into a box together, they rub against each other and small items hide under large ones. A die-cut corrugated or card insert gives each component a defined space, so the kit arrives as it was packed and the technician can check it is complete before starting a job.

Inserts also protect machined faces. Gears and sprockets are better held apart so teeth do not chip each other, and sealing faces benefit from not touching the walls. For very small parts, a separate small carton or bag inside the main box keeps them together.

We design the insert from your component list and dimensions, and show it on the proof so you can see where each part sits. Our card and corrugated box inserts can be made to any kit layout.

Inserts can be printed too. A simple outline or a number beside each cavity, matched to a parts list on the lid, lets the technician check off components as they are removed and makes returns easier to inspect when a kit comes back unused.

Printing Part Numbers and Brand Details

In a parts warehouse, the box end is often all that can be seen on the shelf. Put the part number, a short description and your brand on that end panel in large, clear type, and consider printing it on both ends so it does not matter which way the box is stored. Space for a barcode label or a printed barcode helps with picking and stock control.

The main panels can carry your brand colours and logo, vehicle application information or an exploded diagram of the kit. Many parts brands keep one carton design for the whole range and apply a variable label for each part number, which keeps print runs efficient. Others print part-specific boxes for their best-selling kits so they stand out at trade counters.

Colour coding is another practical option. Giving each product family its own band colour on the box end, for example one for clutch parts and another for timing components, helps warehouse staff and trade counter teams find the right shelf quickly, even before they read the part number. The same colour system works across printed motorcycle parts boxes if you supply both trades.

Sizing a Box Around Your Parts

Send us the overall dimensions of the assembled kit, or of each component if they are packed loose, along with the approximate packed weight. Photographs of the parts laid out help us plan the insert. From there we work out an internal size that fits the kit with sensible clearance and add the board thickness to give you the external size.

If you supply many part numbers, it is worth grouping them into a small number of standard box sizes. A handful of well-chosen sizes, each with an insert or a little packing, usually covers a whole catalogue more economically than a unique box for every part. Lighter general parts can go in standard roll end auto part boxes.

Who Uses Transmission Part Packaging

Our customers in this area include aftermarket parts brands, remanufacturers who rebuild and resell gearboxes and components, specialist importers of performance parts and distributors supplying garages. Motorsport suppliers and classic car specialists use custom boxes to present their parts properly and protect hard-to-replace components.

Each of these has a slightly different need. A remanufacturer may want plain strong boxes with a clear label area, while a performance brand may want a striking full-colour finish that customers keep. We will suggest an approach once we know where your parts are sold.

Workshops that rebuild gearboxes in-house also use made-to-size boxes to return old cores to suppliers, since a box that fits the core properly stops it shifting and damaging other parcels on the way back.

Getting a Quote for Transmission Boxes

Share your part list, sizes and weights, the box style you prefer, how many part numbers you need and how the print should look. We prepare a free proof showing the box and any inserts, and production takes 4 to 7 working days after you approve it. Delivery is free and tracked to UK mainland addresses, and misprints or damage reported within 10 days are reprinted or refunded. Every enquiry receives a custom quote within one working day. Our guide to custom box pricing shows how size and quantity affect each quote.

Transmission Part Boxes Questions

What buyers ask before ordering transmission part boxes.

What board do you recommend for a timing chain kit?

Most timing chain kits travel well in single wall corrugated board with a die-cut insert to separate the components. Very heavy kits or boxes stacked high may need double wall board.

Can you make an insert for every part in a kit?

Yes. Send the component list with sizes and a photo, and we will design an insert that gives each part its own space so nothing rubs or goes missing.

Can part numbers be printed on the box ends?

Yes, printing the part number and description on one or both end panels makes picking easier when boxes sit on a warehouse shelf.

Do I need a different box for every part number?

Not usually. Many brands group parts into a few standard sizes and add a variable label for each part number, which keeps costs down.

Can the boxes handle oily parts?

Coated or laminated board resists light oil marks better than uncoated board. For oily components, we also suggest bagging parts before boxing them.

Is a crash-lock base strong enough for heavy gears?

Crash-lock bases carry weight well and are fast to assemble. For very heavy assemblies, a full overlap container or double wall board gives more support.

Can you print fitting instructions on the box?

Yes, instructions, diagrams or a QR code linking to fitting guides can be printed on a side panel or inside the lid.

Can I order plain boxes with a label panel?

Yes, plain kraft or white boxes with a one-colour logo and a clear label area suit remanufacturers who pack a wide range of parts.

How do I give you sizes for a box?

Provide the dimensions of the packed kit or each component, the approximate weight and a photo. We calculate the internal and external box sizes and confirm them on the proof.

How quickly can I get new transmission part boxes?

Production takes 4 to 7 working days after the free proof is approved, and tracked UK mainland delivery is free.
